Hero Overview

I'm-a Wario, I'm-a gonna win!
~ Wario's famous catchphrase.
Obey Wario DESTROY MARIO (sinister laugh)
~ Wario in the Super Mario Land 2 commercial.

Wario is a major character in the Super Mario franchise and the titular main protagonist of the Wario Land and WarioWare series.

He is best known as Mario's arch-rival, yet sometimes friend. He first appeared in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins for the Game Boy in 1992 where he was the main antagonist. He is also the main protagonist of both the Wario Land and WarioWare series. He is rude, crude, selfish and a bully - certainly not qualities associated with traditional heroes, and indeed Wario is a borderline villain for the most part. However, Wario has been altered from a threat to a comedic nuisance who has actually become a hero of sorts in his own franchise (albeit a very greedy and flawed one, making him more of an anti-hero). Even so Wario is more motivated by getting treasure and riches than any selfless motivation, but it doesn’t keep him from doing heroic things.

Like Mario, Luigi and Waluigi, he was voiced by Charles Martinet until 2022. However, in the Japanese version of Mario Kart 64 as well as Mario Kart: Super Circuit and in the first two Mario Party games, he was voiced by Thomas Spindler. As of WarioWare Move It, he is currently voiced by Kevin Afghani. In the US commercial for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, he was voiced by the late James H. Sawyer Sr..

Description[]

Wario has actually saved the world on numerous occasions, though it is normally done more out of his love for gold and fame than for any true care about the world's safety (Wario is not completely heartless though, just a bit of an egomaniac). Case in point, after Wario saved the Shake Dimension and its princess from the Shake King, Wario rudely tossed the princess aside so he could take what he desired. Wario had his own sidekick, Waluigi who is also bad and sometimes good. Waluigi is one of the very few people Wario actually shows genuine care for and the two have a pretty good friendship. Though this leads to them often causing mischief and trouble for their rivals, the Mario Bros. and their friends.

In his early appearances, Wario wore a long-sleeved shirt and had fuchsia overalls, but in his later appearances, Wario wore a short-sleeved shirt and wore purple overalls. He also wears green elf-like shoes.

Despite being a villain in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, Wario's Woods and Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman, Wario was an ally to Mario in later Mario games, most notably in Super Mario 64 DS where he helps Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi save Princess Peach from Bowser. Wario is not really evil but a comic relief with anti-heroic purposes. Wario was an unlockable character seven times in Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, the Game Boy Color version of Mario Golf and the Game Boy Color version of Mario Tennis, Yakuman DS, Mario Golf Advance Tour, Mario Kart 7 and Super Smash Bros. 4. He was playable in every Mario Party game except for Mario Party Advance. He was absent in the Game Boy Advance version of Mario Power Tennis.

Wario appeared in every Mario Kart game as a playable character except for Super Mario Kart. From Mario Kart 64 to Mario Kart DS, and Mario Kart 7, Wario's kart is purple, but in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8 his kart was yellow instead of purple, due to the color of his hat and shirt.

Appearance[]

Wario is a fat man wearing a plumber's outfit similar to Mario's, except instead of red and blue, it is colored yellow and purple. He has white gloves, green pointed shoes, a cap with a blue W labelled on it, a large nose and a pointy moustache.

In his WarioWare outfit, he instead wears a biker's uniform with a dark blue shirt, a light blue jacket, pink pants, blue pointed shoes, yellow fingerless gloves, a yellow helmet with goggles and a blue W labelled on it.

Personality[]

Wario is a greedy, selfish and rude bounty hunter. He's willing to scam his friends to get a lot of money or to take any job that pays well, despite the job itself. He's also hot headed and ill-tempered, especially against rivals like Mario. Though his rivalry with Mario has been toned down in recent years, they're still strong rivals.

However, Despite all his negative traits, Wario isn't evil, but more of an anti-hero, since deep down, he has a heart of gold. He does possess heroic qualities, but he often only shows them if he has something to gain from it.

Wario and Waluigi[]

Wario and Waluigi are the Mario Brothers' arch rivals and are quite jealous of their glory, though Waluigi appears to be Luigi's arch nemesis for unknown reasons. In the Mario Sports games, Wario and Waluigi try to defeat Mario and Luigi with their traps but fail. Sometimes they are also helped out by Bowser in Mario Power Tennis in the intro (except Wario and Bowser had a bad relationship with each other). Also the bumbling crooks, Wario and Waluigi tried to rob the Mushroom People's money or sometimes Peach's treasure, acting like criminals, but they were foiled by Mario and Luigi.

Wario and Waluigi are best friends who always work together in their schemes: Wario usually for the profit, Waluigi usually for the glory or just ruining the day of whoever is their victim. They get along well usually, but they also bicker a lot and are both very clumsy at times, causing their schemes to fail. Despite this, however, the two are always partnered up and seem to find some sort of comfort in each other: it's possible Wario considers Waluigi to be his only true friend (he betrays his Warioware friends twice and tricks them into doing his work, after all) and it's very much confirmed Wario is the only friend of Waluigi. The two even support good chemstry with each other only which further proves this theory.

Wario Land series[]

Wario was a hero in this series, and teamed up with various allies to defeat various enemies and collect various treasures. Often his only goal was to collect treasures or get back home, with saving people just being a thing on the side to him.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[]

Wario went on an adventure in Kitchen Island to get the Peach Statue that Captain Syrup and her minions stole. Dependent on how much gold the treasure hunter has collected, his home looks has various looks, ranging from a Planet to a Birdhouse.

Wario Land 2[]

Syrup stole Wario's Castle and kicked him out far away from his home. Wario must now get back to his castle and defeat his nemesis once again. If he goes to all of the paths and gets all treasure and map pieces, he can go to Syrup's castle and rob her treasure. After he stole her treasure, he then goes back home while a Giant Spear Man chases him.

Wario Land 3[]

After a plane crash, Wario stumbles upon a music box, which teleports him into its own land. He shortly meets a shadowy figure, who says he should get five music boxes to restore his power, then Wario will be able to go home. So Wario sets off to get the music boxes. Once Wario gets all five music boxes, it releases the Hidden Figure who was revealed to be the evil Rudy the Clown, who has no need for Wario anymore. However, Wario defeats him and everyone in the music box world turned back to normal. As a reward, Wario gets to keep all the treasure he collected throughout his adventure.

Wario Land 4[]

Wario stumbles across an ancient pyramid, containing four mega worlds filled with baddies and treasure. Wario goes through the four worlds, and finds a fifth world, being the home of the game's antagonist, Golden Diva. Wario must defeat the villain to uncover the treasure. After he defeats the Golden Diva he escapes the pyramid, it was revealed that the cat was Princess Shokora, whose appearance depends on how many treasure Wario finds. After seeing her, he drove home until a few days later, he goes use the money he found to go to a buffet.

Virtual Boy Wario Land[]

Wario drives his plane called Bulldog to an island, where baddies take his plane. He must get his plane back, as well as collect treasure and uncover more secrets of the lost island. After defeating Demon Head he goes home to which way depends on how many treasure he finds.

Wario Land: Shake It! (Shake Dimension)[]

The Shake King kidnaps Queen Merelda, forcing Wario and Syrup to team up and save Merelda, and for Wario, collect some treasure and get the bottomless coin sack. When Wario finally got it, Captain Syrup took it away as it was revealed to be a consation fee.

WarioWare Inc. series[]

Wario is the CEO of WarioWare, Inc., and makes video games. He apparently lives in Diamond City and has numerous friends. He often scams his friends into doing work for him to profit from, yet they don't seem to hold grudges, probably because he is more friendly in this series an example of this is how in Warioware Gold states that he keeps his door unlocked just so his friends can come in whenever they please.

Other Media[]

Wario World[]

In Wario World, the Spritelings close up an evil being called the Black Jewel, however, Wario, thinking it is a giant diamond, steals it and laughs at his castle from Wario Land 2. However, the Jewel wakes up, and turns Wario's treasure into monsters, he then kicks Wario out of his castle and destroys it as well. With the help of the Spritelings, Wario defeats the Jewel's henchmen and various world bosses, and pummels the Jewel in a fist fight in the sky. Dependent on how many Spritelings Wario saved depends on what his home looks like, ranging from a tent to his original castle.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

Wario appears in the DS remake of Super Mario 64. He and Luigi join Mario to eat cake from Princess Peach but are ambushed by the Koopa Troop leaving Yoshi to save them. After Mario gets free from Goomboss and then Luigi gets free from Big Boo, the green plumber can enter the challenge of Chief Chilly. Beating him unlocks Wario. Wario is slower than the other three but can punch black bricks and is the strongest out of the four. In addition he is the only one who can access the secret of the moat.

Super Smash Bros. Series[]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Wario's clothes were one of Mario's alt. costumes in the game. His clothes are in an alternate costume in the Melee as well, but Wario was made into a trophy. He originally was going to be in it, but was cut.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

In Brawl, Wario finally becomes a playable character in his biker outfit, but has his classic outfit as an alternate costume. His Final Smash briefly turns him into Wario-Man, where he eats garlic and becomes super powerful and nimble.

Subspace Emissary[]

In the Subspace Emissary storyline, Wario is a supporting antagonist and one of the Subspace Commanders alongside Bowser and Ganondorf, though he appears to have relatively low control over the army in comparison to his cohorts. Wario's reason for joining was merely to cause widespread havoc, and he actually cares very little about the army's actual objective, so long as he's allowed to do whatever he wants. This is also Wario at arguably his most villainous as he’s shown to be downright sadistic and does villainous things not only out of greed but for his own enjoyment.

After Kirby defeats Petey Piranha, and rescues either Princess Zelda or Princess Peach, Wario will capture the other one. After he successfully captures one of the princesses, he retreats before the Subspace Bomb goes off. Later, he dispatches Porky Minch to capture Lucas, but after Porky is defeated, Wario personally appears and changes his target to Ness (who had arrived to save Lucas). After Ness was able to dodge all of Wario's capture attempts, Wario attempted to capture Lucas instead. Ness pushed Lucas out of the way and gets captured by Wario, resulting in the villain taunting Lucas and laughing maniacally as the boy runs away. Wario is later seen finding Luigi already in his Trophy mode and proceeds to capture Luigi. However, this was a trap set by King Dedede. King Dedede managed to take Wario's cargo and take, Luigi, Ness, and one of the Princesses with him.

In a desperate attempt to restart his collection, Wario decided to fight Lucas and the Pokémon Trainers Squirtle single-handedly. However, Lucas and Squirtle managed to defeat Wario and turn him into a trophy.

Wario was eventually rescued by Kirby and decided to exact his revenge on King Dedede, kicking him in the back. But Luigi and Ness defended King Dedede. They non-verbally motioned to Wario that they were going to fight Tabuu and bring world back into order, and that he was welcome to join. So Wario decided to join all the characters to fight Tabuu, probably realizing that he'd get no chance to pull off any of his mischief.

In SSB4, Wario is in it again, but as an unlockable character. He is quicker than his Brawl version though.

Wario returns yet again in SSBU, which includes every character from the previous games. His Final Smash, Wario Man, has been changed from a transformation Final Smash into one that delivers a series of punches on opponents if used near them, and his sliding dash attack has been changed to his shoulder tackle from the Wario Land games.

Mario And Sonic[]

Wario is a playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In the first three games, he is a Power-type character.

Trivia[]

  • One of Wario's alternate costumes in the Super Smash Bros. series is based on Mario's outfit from the early Mario games and in the three DIC cartoon adaptations.
  • In all of the Super Smash Bros. games except for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one of Mario's alternate costumes is based on Mario's outfit. The same thing happens in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door when Mario wears the W Emblem badge, his clothes turn into the color scheme of Wario's and there is also a Wario costume for Mario to wear in Super Mario Odyssey.
  • In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode, "Plummers Academy", there is an unnamed overweight plumber sporting yellow and purple clothing. This could be a possible inspiration for Wario, who would be introduced three years later after the episode's original airing.
  • Wario was originally designed to look like an ugly-looking caricature of Mario.
  • According to the manual of Wario World, Wario has 20/70 eyesight, 80+ psi grip, weighs 308 pounds, has size 11 feet, his brain does not have many wrinkles, has no cavities, can do over 100 push-ups, can hold 22 gallons in his stomach, and can hold 1.1 gallons in his bladder
