Hero Overview

Fine, Kakarot, you are the mightiest Saiyan, I've admitted that much. At least for now. But don't you dare think that this is over. I won't let you keep me in second place forever, feeding on the scraps of your glory. I will surpass you, and even then I'll keep pushing, I'll surpass every single warrior in the Universe. I won't stop until I'm the ultimate number one!
~ Vegeta vowing to surpass Goku.
IT'S OVER 9000!
~ Vegeta's most known line.
That's how I became a Super Saiyan! The sleeper has awakened... I am the Prince of all Saiyans once again!
~ Vegeta after he transformed into a Super Saiyan.
You're pitiful, Kakarot. You were warned about the Heart Virus. You should've known turning into a Super Saiyan could only make it worse. Really, Kakarot. You're far too forgiving to be a great warrior. I'll finish these androids, but then you're next, got it? Good.
~ Vegeta to Goku after he got defeated by Android 19 due to the Heart Virus.

Prince Vegeta IV, or just simply Vegeta, is the deuteragonist of the Dragon Ball franchise.

He starts as a villain, but as the story progresses, he becomes one of the heroes of the Z Warriors. He is the prince of the warrior race known as the Saiyans. He is Bulma's husband and the father of Trunks and Bulla. He also has an on & off rivalry with Goku, but they are usually on good terms.

He is voiced by Ryo Horikawa in the Original Japanese version (who also voices Captain Falcon in the Super Smash Bros. series), Brian Drummond in the Ocean dub (who also voices Blurr in Transformers: Armada, and Streaky in Krypto the Superdog as well as Copy Vegeta in Dragon Ball Super), Roger Rhodes in the Blue Water version, and Christopher Sabat in the FUNimation version, who also voices Yamcha and Piccolo in the same series, Elfman Strauss in Fairy Tail, All Might in My Hero Academia, Yami Sukehiro in Black Clover, Alex Louis Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist, and Roronoa Zoro in One Piece.

Personality[]

Jiren: Your battle is already over, Saiyan. You know it's futile and yet something pushes you to keep going. What could it be?
Vegeta: Good question. But even if I told you, you wouldn't understand, because you're just a cold-blooded bastard. You wouldn't know what it means to fight for others with all your heart and soul!
~ Vegeta's determination.

Vegeta is a cold and disdainful man, as well as bitter about the destruction of his people and their time under Frieza's boot. Because of his title as a prince and his Saiyan heritage, he feels that he is superior to almost everyone else and thinks Saiyans are the strongest race in the universe. Ever since he was a child, Vegeta has had no problem with killing but has become less inclined to do so over time. In fact, he has stated that he became a ruthless killer and warrior due to Frieza making him so, indicating he could have turned out differently. Perhaps due to his royal status, he feels a strong sense of dignity.

As time went on, Vegeta eventually lost his mercilessness and cruelty, becoming more relaxed and very attached to his wife and children. After becoming Majin Vegeta, he did return to his former ways, but it was just a failed attempt to regain his cruelty, thinking that was what made him strong before. As one of the elites of the Saiyan race, Vegeta was obsessed with becoming a Super Saiyan, something that is legendary amongst his people. He was also obsessed with surpassing his rival, Goku, and in the movie, Fusion Reborn, he actually wept at his inability to do so.

However, as Goku fought Kid Buu, Vegeta finally admitted that his rival was superior and his rivalry towards him has become more of a friendly one. Vegeta is rather aggressive and easily enraged, but can also be rather intelligent and serious, though he possesses a dry, even dark sense of humour, often mocking his enemies. Despite his arrogance and feelings of superiority, Vegeta has at times shown fear of powerful opponents but has always continued to fight them.

Vegeta's strongest trait was his sense of pride. While the manifestation of the pride changed over his growth, it remained. Initially, his status of Prince of the Saiyans gave him an intense sense of entitlement, while his power drove him to be arrogant. After he shifts from villain to hero, he still carries the sense of entitlement that being a Prince made him feel, as too was his confidence in his strength formed into arrogance; his arrogance caused significant repercussions a number of times, from underestimating Goku upon their first meeting, confronting Frieza without knowing the Emperor's true strength, and allowing Cell to absorb Android 18, wanting a challenge for his own new strength and being unable to anticipate that Cell would surpass him.

While Vegeta's pride remained, for himself, it became more a sense of accomplishment for how far he had progressed, rather than arrogant lack of respect for others. His pride grew to include his family, as his proud of his wife, and his children; he grew to consider them his "kingdom," rather than a long-destroyed world; he still considered himself the Prince of Saiyans, however, this was more out of respect for his history, and his legacy, as opposed to his previous entitlement and sense of superiority from being royal. Vegeta didn't truly appreciate being a father until bonding with Future Trunks; at first threatened because the time traveler had reached Super Saiyan at a younger age, eventually he become harsh to him for not being strong enough. Future Trunks attempted to bond with Vegeta, due to the Saiyan Prince being dead in his timeline before the boy got to know him, however, Vegeta remained cold and occasionally callous. This changed when Cell killed Future Trunks, the death of his son pushed Vegeta into finally understanding how much his son meant to him; despite still being blunt, he would take the experience with Future Trunks to be more considerate and involved with the present day version.

Vegeta originally began a family as yet another way to compete with Goku, noting that Goku's ability to be always ahead could have been influenced by having a wife and offspring. Despite this cynical goal, Vegeta grew to truly love Bulma and Trunks, seemingly finally moving on from his evil past. However, Vegeta suffered a relapse; seeing how Babidi's spells could change the most mediocre fighter into a vastly deadlier warrior, along with a misguided belief that being evil made someone more powerful, Vegeta surrendered himself to the warlock's power, becoming Majin Vegeta. He murdered a quarter of the tournament audience to coax a fight out of Goku; yet he seemed to consciously avoid the side with Bulma in it. Majin Vegeta and Goku fought with animosity for the first time since their original meeting; Vegeta feeling strong that he seemed to be beating him, yet ashamed that he took a shortcut from Babadi. The energy released from their fight completed the charging needed to awaken Majin Buu, a threat beyond them all. Despite his fall, Majin Vegeta's love for his son was what mattered most to him, not strength. Vegeta asked what the afterlife will be like to him, which Piccolo straightly assured him he would go to Hell; despite this knowledge, Majin Vegeta willingly gave his life in an attempt to destroy Majin Buu. As Vegeta's body was restored by King Yemma to help counter the threat of Super Buu, he was angered that his sacrifice was proven pointless, yet urging to fight the monster again. Vegeta was also upset at Goku for hiding his Super Saiyan 3 form, as its absence gave him a false sense of success.

While Vegeta had a strong sense of pride and dedication to self-reliance, upon desperate situations, he could be convinced to compromise. He finds the Fusion Dance embarrassing, with it and Potara Fusion alike being a blow to his sense of accomplishment, as being merged warriors mean that he didn't prove his strength as an individual. Nevertheless, as noted, dire circumstances would make him agree, but with significant reluctance.

Over the culmination of the Buu Saga, Vegeta managed to reach a state of redemption; his cooperativeness, self-sacrifice, and repentance of his evil past all contributed to his ultimate atonement. While still obstinate, he no longer carried hubris, with all of these elements, the Dragon Ball wish to restore every life lost over the Buu ordeal, except the evil ones, revealed that Vegeta had ceased to be evil, as his life was restored. Despite this return to life, he was willing to risk it in battles against Kid Buu as to save the universe.

Despite his acceptance that Goku was always the superior warrior at the climax of the Kid Buu conflict, afterwards, he seemed to have reneged on this, which happened after Beerus arrived on Earth, and Goku's ascension to Super Saiyan God. Vegeta similarly reached this level, including Super Saiyan Blue like Goku; unlike his old self, Vegeta was not smug about his power, rather coolly confident.

Relationship[]

Family[]

  • King Vegeta: King Vegeta is Vegeta's father and the tyrannical ruler of the Saiyan race. King Vegeta instilled a sense of superiority in his son, however, nothing else; upon King Vegeta's death, Vegeta felt nothing, rather he was more annoyed that Planet Vegeta had blown up because it meant he lost his throne. Although, as an adult when learning the truth of Frieza murdering the Saiyans, Vegeta respected his father enough to want to avenge him.
  • Tarble: Tarble is Vegeta's younger brother.
  • Bulma: After Frieza's death, Bulma married to Vegeta. He is strict towards Bulma but deep down he does love his wife, although eventuality the dynamic completely reversed, with Bulma often making decisions about the family that he has to acquiesce; Vegeta was uninterested in raising his children, but eventually he found a profound appreciation for them. Perhaps to compensate what he lost with Trunks, he wanted a Saiyan name for his daughter, though Bulma ignored him, naming her Bulla. Bulma made Vegeta new Saiyan armors.
  • Trunks: Trunks is Vegeta's son. Vegeta trains his son to become a warrior like him but shocked when Trunks turned into a Super Saiyan even as a kid. Vegeta made a deal with Trunk if he land a punch on him, they go to the amusement park for 1 hour. While coarse, Vegeta deeply cares for his son, opting to sacrifice his life to save his son.
  • Future Trunks: This Trunks is Vegeta's son from the future. Vegeta training with him to fight against Cell. Vegeta berates Trunks for using the Super Saiyan 3rd Grade due to its weakness to lose the user's speed. But he does love Trunks when he was shot by Cell.
  • Bulla: Bulla is Vegeta's daughter. Vegeta is more attentive to her than he was for Trunks, perhaps for fear of missing out again or merely a genuine desire to bond closer.

Friends[]

  • Goku: Goku is Vegeta's best friend and former arch-rival. At first, they started out as enemies on the Saiyan Saga, but later allies in the Planet Namek saga when fighting against Frieza. During the Android saga, Vegeta saved Goku's life from Android 19 because he declared if anyone is going to defeat Goku, it is going to be Vegeta himself. Vegeta calls Goku an idiot for transforming into a Super Saiyan which speeds up the Heart Virus as well kicked Goku to Piccolo. When Goku died against Cell, Vegeta blasted Goku for ditching away from their fight. During Majin Buu saga, Vegeta is excited to get his chance to fight Goku. They fought when Babidi brainwashed Vegeta until he admitted his defeat. Vegeta cursed Goku for keeping his secret the Super Saiyan 3 in their battle. After Kid Buu's defeat, their rivalry became lesser. During the Dragon Ball Super series, Vegeta is still determined to surpass Goku when training to achieve the Super Saiyan God. As best friends, Vegeta often still finds bafflement about Goku, such as the latter's ability to remain married in spite of absences and apparently not knowing about kissing.
  • Gohan: They were once enemies but now allies. In the Cell Games, Vegeta is shock of Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 and how easily he defeat the Cell Jrs. Gohan saves Vegeta from getting killed by Cell. Vegeta helped Gohan to distract Cell, allowing Gohan to kill the Bio-Android. Vegeta berates Gohan for not training after 7 years due to Chi-Chi not allowing him to train.
  • Beerus: Vegeta is very respectful towards Beerus as he called him as Lord Beerus. He met him with Vegeta was a child. Despite Vegeta's strong sense of dignity, the power of Beerus is such that he forsakes it to humiliate himself if it can delays the Destruction God's wrath. As Vegeta reaches further god levels, he fears Beerus much less, though still treats him with a lot of respect.
  • Good Buu: Vegeta was once enemies with the Good Majin Buu. He tries to kill him by exploding himself but failed due to him regenerating. During the fight against the Evil Kid Buu, the Good Buu saves Vegeta. Vegeta tries to kill Buu but reminded by Goku that Buu saved him causing him to let him live.

Enemies[]

  • Frieza: Like Goku, Frieza is also Vegeta's archnemesis who killed his father and destroyed his home. He intend to kill Frieza by wanting Goku's help. Even though Vegeta despised Frieza, up until his redemption, he ended up emulating the Emperor as he believed supreme power was achieved through evil deeds. When Vegeta was finally strong enough to kill Frieza after the latter's resurrection, Goku had to do it instead as Frieza would blow up the planet before Vegeta could attack; despite Vegeta no longer caring as much about Frieza, he was annoyed that Goku swooped in to take his triumph.
  • Android 19: Vegeta rescues a heart virus-weakened Goku from it. Vegeta then easily and excessively tears 19 into pieces.
  • Android 18: Vegeta arrogantly believed he could dispatch her as easily as he did 19. However, he is brutally beaten. After she reforms and marries Krillin, Vegeta holds no ill-will, nor much interest in her.
  • Cell: Cell is Vegeta's most dangerous enemies when the latter has his cells inside him, which gave Cell an insight into him, thus knew how to exploit his ego. Vegeta initially got the upperhand but made a mistake to allow Cell to absorb Android 18. After Cell's return, he kills Future Trunks for which Vegeta tries to kill him but was overpowered. Vegeta distracted Cell allowing Gohan to kill him.
  • Evil Buu: Vegeta never met this iteration due to self-destructing in a failed attempt to kill the chubby previous Majin Buu.
  • Babidi: The evil wizard Babidi tries to control Vegeta but broke free due to his Saiyan's Pride. Vegeta never yielded control to the wizard, rather allowed his magic to help him climb to greater heights of power.
  • Kid Buu: Vegeta is pivotal in the final fight against the wicked Majin; distracting him so that Goku could recharge his power. Vegeta comes up with the idea to use a Spirit Bomb that destroys Buu.
  • Dr. Gero: Met him as Android 20, however, didn't realise it was Gero. Due to reaching Super Saiyan, Vegeta looked down on 20, planning to destroy him to flaunt his power again, albeit 20 escaped.
  • Cooler: Met Frieza's brother upon his second appearance as a robotic warrior, before Vegeta and Goku cooperated to overpower Cooler's actual new body, the Big Ghette Star. Vegeta ends up crushing the computer chip that is the heart of the machine.
  • Janemba: Vegeta is baffled by the evil entity's inexplicable powers. Eventually driven to Fusion Dance with Goku, twice, as the first failed.
  • Zamasu and Goku Black: Vegeta become enemies with the Universe 10's Kai, Zamasu. Goku and Vegeta couldn't defeat Zamasu but managed to erase this misanthropic Kai with the help from Grand Zeno.

Powers and Abilties[]

Vegeta is an extremely powerful warrior, rivalled only by Goku. As a Saiyan, he possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, endurance, and durability and gains a significant increase in power whenever he is injured. Vegeta can manipulate energy in the form of blasts and flight, as well as sense the energy of others, and with his tail, he can become a Great Ape by being exposed to Blutz Waves, increasing his power ten times.

SSJVegeta2

Vegeta using his Big Bang Attack

Like many characters in the Dragon Ball series, Vegeta has a number of signature techniques that he uses. One is the Big Bang Attack, where he fires a medium-sized ball of energy from his hand, generating a sizable explosion. Another is Galick Gun, one of his most powerful attacks early on in the series, where Vegeta holds his hands in front of his torso with the backs parallel to each other while bending to one side, charging energy around him before thrusting his hands forward, firing a beam of energy.

463px-Final Flash

Vegeta using his Final Flash

Another of his techniques is the Final Flash, where Vegeta holds his hands out at his sides, charging energy in them, before bringing them together in front of him and firing a powerful blast of energy. The next of Vegeta's techniques is Super Energy Wave Volley, where he fires a fast barrage of energy waves at the opponent. Another is the Final Shine Attack, where he holds his hand at his side, charging a sphere of energy in it, then brings his hang forward, firing a powerful blast. Vegeta has the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, where his power and abilities greatly increases beyond his normal form, and he had been obsessed with obtaining this form for most of his life, especially after he saw others do so.

Vegeta as an Ascended Super Saiyan

When he transforms into a Super Saiyan, Vegeta's hair turns pale blond, his eyes become green, and his body becomes slightly more muscular. He later gained the form of an Ascended Super Saiyan, which is a more advanced level of the Super Saiyan form and is much more powerful than the normal form. In this form, Vegeta calls himself "Super Vegeta" with his muscles increasing in size and his hair becoming larger and spikier. Although he will never use it, Vegeta has the Super Saiyan Third Grade. However, he considered this form primitive due to its bulky muscles making him hard for Vegeta to move fast as well he won't hit his enemies who has any source of speed.

SSJ2Vegeta

Vegeta in Super Saiyan 2 form

Eventually Vegeta gained the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 2, which is a successor transformation to the normal Super Saiyan form. It gives him much greater strength, speed, and energy output and causes his hair to become longer and spikier, as well as electricity to appear in the energy aura surrounding him. Vegeta later gained the form of Super Saiyan 4, after Bulma empowered him with a Blutz Wave generating machine, though it made him transform into a Golden Great Ape at first.

SSJ4VegetaPissed

Vegeta as a Super Saiyan 4

He managed to regain consciousness in that form, allowing him to make the jump to Super Saiyan 4. Vegeta becomes even more powerful when he transforms into this form since it is the perfect combination of Super Saiyan and Great Ape forms. In this form, he gains red fur on much of his body and tail, his hair becomes longer, more wild,

and brown in colour and his eyes become aqua coloured. In the Raging Blast video games, Vegeta gained the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 3, a transformation level above the Super Saiyan 2 transformation and dramatically increasing his power, but has never done this in the anime or manga. Vegeta also learned how to perform Vegeta managed to accomplish his own version of Goku's Ultra Instinct, which was called Ultra Ego. His eyebrows vanish like Super Saiyan 3, his hair turns silver, and he has a purple aura.

Gogeta (in Super Saiyan form)

In the Fusion Dance with Goku, causing them to fuse together into the more powerful Gogeta, which they have used when facing highly powerful opponents. However, this technique has to be performed exactly correct or it will result in a fusion that's actually less powerful than the fusees and it only lasts 30 minutes. Then the fuses have to wait an hour before they can do it again.

In the Potara Earring Fusion with Goku, causing them to fuse together into the more powerful Vegito, which they have used when facing highly powerful opponents. However, this fusiion will only last for 1 hour.

By the time of the Superhero Saga, Vegeta increased his effectiveness as a fighter by taking interest in Meditation. The interest was sparked by seeing as Jiren maintain a Relaxed State and only ever exerted effort or power for a brief moment, never wasting his reserves. This new outlook helped Vegeta win a sparring match with Goku, albeit after heavily exhausting each other first.

Quotes[]

I am Vegeta, Prince of all Saiyans!
~ Vegeta.
It's Over 9000!
~ Vegeta's famous quote
Kakarot!
~ Vegeta to Goku.
Nobody kills Kakarot while I'm around. Destiny has reserved that luxury for me!
~ Vegeta.
Amazing. How do you do it, Kakarot? You've always been like this, ever since the day I first met you; always ready to meet the next challenge, even if it's bigger than you are... It was the same on Namek. You had improved so much that it made Recoome like he was standing still. Your power had increased so dramatically since our battle on Earth that I thought you had done it, I thought that you had become a Super Saiyan! It tore me apart! How could a low-class soldier accomplish so easily what I...I had to struggle my whole life to achieve!? After three millennia, it has finally happened; a new Super Saiyan has emerged, and, somehow, I have become this pauper's witness. Then at last, it happened. I too transformed. After living every moment of every day for the singular purpose of surpassing you, I finally became a Super Saiyan myself, the Prince had reclaimed his throne and fulfilled his destiny. But no matter how strong I became, your power still exceeded mine. At first, I thought it was your loved ones; that it was your instinct to protect them that spurred you on and pushed you beyond your limits. But then I found myself with a family of my own, and my power... didn't increase at all. I used to fight for the sheer of pleasure of it; for the thrill of the hunt, oh I had the strength unmeasurable - I spared no one. And yet, you showed mercy to everyone, even your fiercest enemies, even me! Yet, you never fought to kill, or for revenge. Only to test your limits and to push yourself beyond them, to become the strongest you could possibly be. How can a Saiyan fight like that and at the same time be so gentle that he wouldn't hurt a fly? It makes me angry just thinking about it! But, perhaps it is my anger that has made me blind to the truth for so long. I see it now, this day has made it all too clear. You're better than me Kakarot. You are the best.
~ Vegeta shows his respect for Goku.
What did you do... TO MY BULMAAAAAAA?!
~ Vegeta's furious response to Beerus slapping his wife, Bulma.

Trivia[]

  • Vegeta's rivalry with Goku has made him so determined to be the one to beat him, that he actually saved Goku's life numerous times.
  • Unlike other characters, Vegeta has always referred to Goku by his Saiyan name, "Kakarot", with a few rare exceptions.
  • Counting his Super Saiyan 3 form in Raging Blast, Vegeta has apparently reached every Super Saiyan form, since it was stated that he could use the Ultra Super Saiyan form, but didn't because of the fact it takes away speed.
  • Technically, Vegeta should be the "king" of the Saiyans due to his father's death but has never referred to himself by this title, possibly out of respect for his father. Plus, perhaps without anyone to implement the crowning ceremony, he accepts just being a prince.
  • Though he lost his father during his childhood, Vegeta seems to have inherited his father's talent for applying military tactics in real-time fieldwork.
  • In his first few appearances in Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta had a completely different color scheme with orange and green armor and brown hair.
  • As the Dragon Ball Z series went on, Vegeta wore less and less of his armor, first losing the crotch guard after the Saiyan saga, then the shoulder guards during the Captain Ginyu Saga, then just a chest plate in the Android saga, and finally in the World Tournament Saga where he wore no armor at all. In Super, however, he wears chest plate armor again.
  • After the Frieza Saga, it seemed as if Vegeta's left arm took the most damage whenever he was badly hurt in battle.
  • He has a habit of referring to himself in the third person whenever he's in a Super Saiyan form.
  • Vegeta is the only pure-blooded Saiyan seen in the series whose children weren't born with the black spiky hair and black eyes commonly seen in Saiyans.
  • Vegeta is one of Goku's major rivals in the series, alongside Hit and Jiren.
    • Vegeta is also very similar to Caulifla: They both clearly want the newer higher crazier levels like Goku has as he is always the first one to reach the newer higher crazier levels, like Autonomous Ultra Instinct, especially even during in the Tournament Of Power, while watching his first time Autonomous Ultra Instinct fight with Jiren.
    • In the manga, Vegeta reached his own higher form akin to Goku's, which he dubbed Ultra Ego.
  • Vegeta appeared twice in DEATH BATTLE!, where he won against Shadow the Hedgehog and lost to Thor Odinson.
