If you do not at least try, you will never change.
~ Doraemon

MS-903 Doraemon, more commonly known as simply Doraemon or Fat Cat, is the titular deuteragonist of the franchise of the same name. He is a cat-like robot created by the Matsushiba Robot Factory in the 22nd century, and is sent back in time to aid Nobita Nobi by Sewashi Nobi, Nobita's great-great-grandson. He possesses a fourth dimensional pocket from which he can acquire various kinds of futuristic tools, gadgets, and playthings from a future department store. He originally had ears but they were bitten off by Sewashi's robot mouse, causing him to be afraid of mice.

Portrayals[]

Appearance[]

Doraemon was originally born with a yellow body, before he started to cry uncontrollably after accidentally drinking The Bane of Gloom. The large amount of tears resulted in his original paint to gradually peel off, causing him to turn blue. He also used to have ears until they were bitten off by a robot mouse. In fact, it was the loss of his ears that led to his body turning blue, as being laughed by Noramyako for not having ears causing him to feel insecure and decide to drink The Source of Enthusiasm to become happy, only to mistake The Bane of Gloom for it instead.

Doraemon's main physical appearance changes as the manga progresses. At first, he is predominantly blue with a blue tail, white stomach, and flesh coloured hands and feet. He also stoops, and has a body much larger than his head. In later issues, he sports a smaller body, white hands and feet, and red balloon tail that one can pull to turn him off - the appearance most identify him with today. Doraemon is considered a substandard product because many of his robotic features i.e. radar whiskers and cat-calling bell malfunctioned after production.

Personality[]

As a result of having his ears bitten off by a robot mouse and being laughed at by Noramyako, Doraemon developed a morbid fear of mice and low self-esteem. He also has the tendency to panic during emergencies, frantically trying to pull out a very much needed tool from his pocket, only to produce a huge assortment of unrelated household items. And despite trying to prevent Nobita from doing wrong, he has shown himself to be just as prone to recklessness and irresponsibility at times. As such, there are times that Sewashi proposes Doraemon's younger sister, Dorami, to take his place as Nobita's caretaker, only for Doraemon to prove himself to be irreplaceable to Nobita.

Still, Doraemon is very friendly and intelligent, not to mention long-suffering because of Nobita's antics. It is him who holds the Doraemons together, despite their differences. Doraemon while may see Nobita as a great friend, also has to endure all the hardships for the sake of the latter. Doraemon often finds Nobita as annoying, and the moment Nobita starts to abuse the power of the gadgets he gives to him for his bad personal gains, Doraemon would become extremely angry and try to force Nobita to give him back the gadgets by scolding him, only to end up being forced to retry due to Nobita using the powers that those gadgets granted to either force, or scare Doraemon away. Although, he does seem to still entrust Nobita with his gadgets despite all the troubles they went through. Despite everything, Doraemon succeeds in his mission, as seen in several episodes where they travel to the future and the short film Nobita's Night before a Wedding.

Doraemon's favourite food is Dorayaki, a Japanese treat filled with red bean paste. A running gag of the series is that Nobita and others can use this to bribe him into giving them what they want. He also has a major crush on a street cat named Mii-chan. In addition, he hates being called a "raccoon", so much that he would easily get angry whenever someone calls him such, be it out of mistake or deliberately to annoy him.

History[]

In The Doraemons and the short film 2112: The Birth of Doraemon, it is revealed that Doraemon's original paint color was yellow. When he was made, the two criminals Dolmanstein and Black Mask were escaping, producing a lightning bolt that struck into him, causing him to be malfunctioned. Due to this, Doraemon did poorly at the Robot Academy and during the final presentation show, he performed badly and nobody wanted to hire him, until baby Sewashi pushed the button. His parents were a bit reluctant, but since Sewashi liked him, they hired Doraemon, and he took care of him ever since.

After getting his ears gnawed off by Sewashi's robot mouse due to it misinterpreting the latter's order, Doraemon was hospitalized, but an accident caused him to lose his ears entirely. His girlfriend Noramyako laughed upon seeing his new look, leading to him slipped into depression on top of a tower, where he accidentally drank The Bane of Gloom. As he wept, the yellow color washed off and his voice changed due to the potion. The next day, Doraemon met Dorami, who introduced herself as his younger sister and told him that Sewashi was kidnapped by Dolmanstein and Black Mask. Out of accident, Doraemon managed to rescue Sewashi but lost his fourth dimensional pocket in the process, before reconciling with Noramyako. As a reward for helping the Time Patrol to capture the criminals, Principal Teraodai gave him the Mini-Doras and a new fourth dimensional pocket on Christmas.

Later on, Sewashi sends Doraemon to the past to take care of his great-great-grandfather, Nobita. Despite multiple troubles due to Nobita's endless flaws, Doraemon eventually succeeds in this mission.
