Hero Overview

Now... we fix everything.
~ Tempest's redemption, and also her most famous quote.

Tempest Shadow, real name Fizzlepop Berrytwist, is the secondary antagonist of the 2017 animated movie My Little Pony: The Movie. She is the Storm King's former second-in-command before he betrayed her, Grubber's boss and later his closest companion, and friend and Twilight's archenemy-turned-friend. She later became the central character/anti-heroine in the IDW sequel comic Tempest's Tale, after serving as the anti-heroine in My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel, a secondary character in the film's interquel book, The Great Princess Caper, and a minor character in the final 2 seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

She is voiced by British-American actress Emily Blunt, who also played Princess Mary in Gulliver's Travels, Juliet in Gnomeo & Juliet, Freya the Ice Queen in The Huntsman: A Winter's Tale, The Baker's Wife from Into the Woods and Evelyn Abbott from A Quiet Place, Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns and Naoko Satomi from The Wind Rises English version. She is then voiced by Sanae Kobayashi in the Japanese Dub, who did the major roles of Alexis Rhodes in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Allen Walker in D-Grayman.

Bio[]

Tempest originally lived in her birth-land of Equestria under the name of Fizzlepop Berrytwist. She had eventually met and formed a close bond with 2 other ponies: Glitter Drops and Spring Rain. One day, they were all playing with their ball, however it had wandered into a dark cave. Fizzlepop had quickly offered to go in and retrieve it, only to be attacked by an ursa minor. The attack given her a scar on her right eye, broken her horn, stripped her of most of her magic. In the days that followed, Fizzlepop's friends began to distance themselves away from her, eventually enrolling in Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, leaving Fizzlepop behind in the process.

Feeling alone, hurt, and abandoned, Fizzlepop would soon leave her homeland to find her own path, giving up on friendship and becoming more antagonistic in tone.

Two stories exist of how she had fell into the Storm King's army.

In Issue #4 of My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel, Fizzlepop lurks in the desert and encounters a crashed air-ship. In the ruins, she finds a gem, however is confronted by the Storm King's foot-soldiers. Using her unstable magic, she manages to escape and she ends up in Klugetown, where she hears stories being spread about the Storm King's quest for power. The unicorn attempts to activate the gem with her magic, believing that it contains enough power to heal her scar, restore her horn, and revive her magic. However, the unicorn hears voices from the gem that reveal it to be the legendary Misfortune Malachite, a cursed relic that dooms whoever uses it. Though she refuses to believe in bad luck, she searches for a way to escape from the Storm King. With the help of a Klugetown pony named Rambler, she boards a caravan, where she opens up about her hardships.

Suddenly, the caravan is ambushed by the Storm King, still in search of the Misfortune Malachite. With her quick thinking, Fizzlepop manages to divert the Storm Guards away from her, however just as she is about to escape, she encounters the fearsome force of nature himself: The Storm King.

The Storm King seemingly intimidates the unicorn, but then congratulates her for managing to outsmart him and his Guards. When the King asks for the unicorn's name, she disguises her name as Tempest Shadow. The Storm King reveals to Tempest that he is in need of a new lieutenant due to his last one, Strife, betraying him and being killed as punishment, however agrees to let her in only if she surrenders the Malachite. Tempest refuses, wanting to fix her horn, but the King brushes this off, saying that he will eventually have enough power to heal her, but once again, tells her to do it in exchange for the Malachite. Tempest tells the Storm King that the Malachite is rumored to be cursed, bringing bad luck to whoever uses it. Despite her claims of it being a superstition, the Storm King crushes the stone, not wanting anything to get in the way of his plans.

Tempest then strikes up a deal with the Storm King: She will help him conquer Equestria to give him enough power to rule the world, should she restore his horn, to which he agrees, giving her the role of commander.

In The Stormy Road to Canterlot, Fizzlepop Berrytwist (referred to as "The Unicorn" in the book) steals the Misfortune Malachite, much like in the IDW prequel comic. However in this novelization, Grubber follows her to Bleak Valley, but accepts her possession of the relic, claiming she won it fair and square. As she speaks to the hedgehog, her loneliness from her childhood ends up catching up to her, and she opens up about the origin behind her scar, and her broken horn, and shows a demonstration of her unstable magic. Feeling sorry for her, Grubber reveals himself to the unicorn and makes an offer to her to meet her master.

Trusting Grubber, the unicorn follows him to the Storm Kingdom, where she meets the Storm King himself. When asked by the King for a demonstration of power that had overpowered her forces, she demonstrates, which amazes him. Fizzlepop is then given a place in his castle, and offers to restore it, in exchange of doing something for him. Believing that he still wants the Misfortune Malachite, she turns it over, only for the King to crush it in his palms, wanting no use for misfortune.

The King then tasks Fizzlepop to invade Mount Aris and steal a powerful pearl from the Queen of the Hippogriffs. The unicorn obliges, wanting to have her horn and magic back and be with her friends again. The unicorn then introduces herself as Tempest Shadow.

Soon, Tempest and Grubber infiltrate the city, and attempt to steal the pearl, only to be caught by Queen Novo. The Storm Guards ambush Mount Aris in their defense, resulting in the Hippogriffs fleeing, leaving the city destroyed and abandoned.

Despite her failure, Tempest later offers to help the Storm King take over Equestria and conquer the world in exchange for her horn, and is warned not to fail him again.

In The Great Princess Caper, it's shown that after Tempest's induction into the army, Grubber had become so impressed by Tempest's strength and ambition that he yearned to become her official side-kick, to which she would constantly reject him.

At some point, Tempest obtained Staff of Sacanas, a powerful weapon that can steal magic, and would later give it to the Storm King.

Role in Film[]

Invasion of Canterlot[]

During Canterlot's first Friendship Festival, Tempest Shadow leads the Storm King's forces in an invasion of the city, demanding the magic of the four Alicorn princesses and turning Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Cadance into obsidian statues when they refuse. Tempest attempts to turn Twilight Sparkle into stone, only for Rainbow Dash to rescue her and Derpy to get in the way. After Twilight and her friends escape, Tempest assumes control of the city, and the Storm King tasks her with securing all four princesses in exchange for restoring her horn. Tempest agrees, saying it won't be a problem, however she soon discovers that Twilight has escaped. With only 3 days to prepare everything, Tempest and her underling, Grubber head about the skiff in order to hunt the Princess down.

Chasing Twilight and her friends[]

Tempest tracks down Twilight to the desert city of Klugetown, where she intimidates some of the townsfolk for information. When Twilight and her friends escape her clutches again, she captures a new ally they've made named Capper. Under Capper's direction, Tempest initially heads toward Black Skull Island. However, when she sees Rainbow Dash's sonic rainboom in the opposite direction, she realizes that Capper was lying. Onboard the pirate ship of Captain Celaeno, Tempest interrogates the crew about Twilight's whereabouts, unaware that she and the rest of the Mane Six are hiding below deck. After Twilight escapes her yet again, Tempest punishes Capper and Celaeno for their deception by destroying the airship on which they stood, rendering them stranded.

Capturing Twilight[]

Tempest eventually manages to capture Twilight on the Basalt Beach after her selfish actions in Seaquestria and fight with her friends cause them to abandon her. On Tempest's sky skiff, the unicorn sadistically taunts Twilight for being alone despite being the "Princess of Friendship." Twilight attempts to reason with the unicorn, stating that they were the same, only for her to respond by threatening that they were nothing alike. She then reveals through a song how she lost her horn and her friends, which left her with the outlook that friendship is meaningless, causing Twilight to feel sorry for her. Tempest then announces that friendship that failed them both, but Twilight rebukes this by saying she failed friendship.

Battle, Betrayal, and Redemption[]

Despite Twilight's attempts to reason with a fellow pony, Tempest refuses to listen and turns her over to the Storm King in Canterlot. The Storm King proceeds to use the Staff of Sacanas to drain Canterlot of its magic, using it to control the sun and moon. Despite Tempest's reminding of their agreement, the Storm King ignores her and continues playing with the sun and moon, much to Tempest and Twilight's dismay.

Soon, when Twilight's friends battle their way through Canterlot, Tempest expresses anger and disbelief, only for it to be cut short when the Storm King uses his magic to create a storm to destroy his enemies and declare himself as the supreme ruler of the world.

When Tempest once again tries to reason with the Storm King about their agreement, he ends up revealing that he had only used her to get into power and does not care about her horn. A fight breaks out amongst the two villains, leading to Tempest almost dying in the cyclone, if not for Twilight. Twilight acknowledges Tempest as a friend and saves her. However the Storm King prepares to kill them off again, only to be knocked back by the Mane 5 and Spike.

Sacrifice and Restoration[]

Tempest watches from the rubble as the Mane 6 successfully steal the Staff of Sacanas, and with it, the Storm King's magic, almost at the cost of Twilight's life. Feeling moved at their friendship, Tempest slowly slinks off in shame, but sees that the Storm King has survived the cyclone and is about to turn the Mane 6 into stone. Now turned on the right side, Tempest intercepts the Storm King's attack, which results in both of them turning to stone. Though the Storm King eventually falls to his death and shatters, Twilight rescues Tempest from a similar fate and uses the staff to restore Tempest to her original self. Now, fully redeemed, Tempest helps the Mane 6 restore Canterlot and free the Princesses from their stone imprisonment.

Accepting friendship once again[]

Near the end of the film, during Songbird Serenade's performance, Twilight approaches Tempest, who still laments the loss of her horn. Twilight helps Tempest see that her magic is still special and powerful, horn or no horn, and encourages her to stay in Equestria. Having accepted Twilight's friendship, Tempest creates a fireworks display for the Friendship Festival and reveals her real name as Fizzlepop Berrytwist. During the film's closing credits, Tempest dances and has fun with her many new friends as she seen on a bouncy house with Twilight and hoof bumping her, playing pinata with Grubber and using her magic to blast the pinata shape of the Storm King, which pops candy and dancing on stage, now a much more happier pony.

As she makes her way through the desert, narrating her journey via journal entries, she discovered the wreckage of crashed airship with a trail of paw prints leading away from it and discovers the Misfortune Malachite among the scattered boxes. Just then, another airship appears, and Grubber and several Storm Creatures lower down from ropes and rope ladders. Grubber demands the Malachite from Tempest on behalf of the Storm King. When he blurts out that the gemstone contains a lot of magic, Tempest refuses to relinquish it. She fends off the Storm Creatures with her unstable magic and runs off. Some time later, Tempest makes her way to Klugetown to get information about the Malachite. Inside a saloon called The Hive, she overhears some creatures talking about the Storm King and his interest in magical artifacts. After ducking into an alleyway, Tempest takes out the Misfortune Malachite and wonders about using its magic to restore her horn. All of a sudden, she hears voices coming from the stone—echoes of its previous owners—warning her to get rid of it or else face terrible misfortune.

Knowing that the Storm King will be coming for her, Tempest prepares to move on from Klugetown. She meets an Earth pony stallion named Rambler, who is pleased to meet another pony so far from Equestria. When he mentions that his caravan is about to leave for Bleak Valley, Tempest asks to join him, and Rambler happily obliges. Later, as the caravan passes through a snowy valley, Rambler asks Tempest why she's traveling, and Tempest says she lost something precious and is looking for a way to get it back. Even later, the caravan is suddenly ambushed by Storm Creatures searching for the Misfortune Malachite. Using Rambler as a decoy, Tempest tries to sneak away, but the Storm King appears before her. Intrigued by Tempest and her search for powerful magic, the Storm King compliments her for eluding his soldiers and offers her a position as his second-in-command after Strife's betrayal. He asks for the Misfortune Malachite in return, but Tempest refuses, saying she needs to get her horn back. The Storm King offers to restore Tempest's horn himself, saying after he conquers the world, he'll have more power than anyone. Tempest gives the Malachite to the Storm King but warns him that it is said to bring bad luck. While Tempest says she doesn't believe in bad luck, placing fault for all of her recent misfortune on others—including herself—the Storm King is convinced of the Malachite's curse and crushes the gem in his hand. Since the Storm King desires magic, Tempest tells him about Equestria and offers to help him conquer it in exchange for fixing her horn. The Storm King agrees, and he shakes the hoof of his new commander.

Tempest's Tale[]

Tempest is seen declining Twilight's offer to stay in Ponyville due to feeling that it's not where she belongs. After promising to return, she travels around Equestria to find where she fits in and helps any-pony in need like repairing damage from the Storm King's attack. Feeling unsure of herself, two ponies suggest she go to the Crystal Empire which seems to be in crisis. After arriving at the Crystal Empire, Princess Cadance openly welcomes Tempest but she feels uneasy. After explaining about what types of love are, Cadance gives Tempest the task of investigating recent incidents on the outskirts of the Crystal Empire. The next day, Tempest goes to the arctic patrol office where she meets one of her childhood friends, Glitter Drops. Glitter Drops is overjoyed and excited to see her again but Tempest is still bitter at her over the way they separated when they were little and wants to focus on the assignment. Despite Glitter Drops trying to make their moment together fun and trying to catch up on old times, Tempest continues to ignore her. Glitter Drops then explains that ponies on them outskirts are having issues with destroyed fences and stolen food. Tempest then realizes that Cadance's true motives for the mission was for her to make friends. Arriving at the residence of a pony named Icy Shanks and after a brief confrontation, he reveals that he is a victim of having his property damaged and food stolen. Frustrated by the ponies, Tempest goes off on her own to investigate the incident while remembering the day she and her friends lost the ball in the ursa minor cave which also had her lose her horn. Glitter Drops catches up with her and Tempest confronts her about abandoning her when they were little. Their dispute is interrupted by a trail of fish and believing the culprit has left them there. Going off on her own once again and attempting to prove that she doesn't need Glitter Drops 'help, she comes face-to-face with an ursa minor which has her paralyzed with fear.

Tempest started to believe in all the hardships she faced after losing her horn were all for nothing until Glitter Drops saves her from the ursa minor by blinding it. Not wanting to accept Glitter Drops' kindness and concern, she explodes in anger at Glitter Drops and declares that she doesn't need anyone to save her. This causes Glitter Drops to tearfully apologize for what happened in their childhood and she reveals that since she was the one who lost the ball in the Ursa minor's cave, it should've been her to have gotten the ball, and because Tempest lost her horn instead of her, she had been consumed with guilt ever since. This confession causes Tempest to be shocked and realizes that she was wrong about holding a grudge against her friend and the two make amends. As they search for the Ursa minor, they catch up on old times and Tempest asks Glitter Drops why she and Spring Rain abandoned her and reached out to her after leaving magic school. Glitter Drops remembers the circumstances of their separation slightly differently and reveals to Tempest that she and Spring Rain did try and include her in their games after she got out of the hospital and didn't really mind if she couldn't do what they could do. She reveals that she and Spring Rain already felt guilty about what happened and didn't want to make her sadder. Before she can explain the rest of the story, they hear the ursa minor and Glitter Drops reveals that it is not growling but calling out to its mother because it is lost and Tempest starts to feel sympathy for the creature. Tempest becomes impressed by Glitter Drops' illusion spell after she reunites it with its real mother. As the two return down the mountain, Tempest asks Glitter Drops again why she and Spring Rain never kept in touch with her and Glitter Drops confesses that she and Spring Rain were the stars of their class at home but at Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns they couldn't keep up with the advanced lessons and dropped out of school. Tempest then realizes that she and Glitter Drops have more in common than she thought. Glitter Drops tells Tempest that if she ever feels angry and alone, she has a friend who loves her. Back at the palace, Tempest reports to Princess Cadance on the events of the previous night. Knowing full well that Cadance orchestrated everything so that Tempest could reunite and reconcile with Glitter Drops, Tempest thanks her.

My Little Pony: Nightmare Knight[]

Tempest helping Princess Luna, Stygian, Capper, and Trixie pull off a heist in Princess Eris' casino.

The Farasian Shores[]

Tempest travels to Zecora's homeland Farasi with her, Applejack, and Rockhoof. During their introduction to Zecora's old friends, Tempest asks Medley Brook what weaknesses kelpies have (claiming to Applejack that she wants to be prepared if Equestria ever decides to invade Farasi). She also helps to repel the attacking Grootslang by gathering ingredients for one of Zecora's potions. As the two groups make their way to the Grootslang's lair, Tempest is annoyed by them stopping to help a trapped Roc, and dismayed when Medley Brook starts off a song, though she finds a kindred spirit in Crystal. When they near the Grootslang's lair, the beast attacks, and Tempest and Rockhoof choose to hold it off while the others get to shelter. The two fight the beast for as long as they can, but are ultimately overpowered and forced to fall back. Tempest also witnesses as Zecora and her friends harness a new set of the Elements of Harmony to destroy the Grootslang.

Personality[]

Tempest Shadow is portrayed in the film and subsequent material as cold, merciless, and spiteful as a result of losing her horn. She is obsessed with having her horn restored and isn't hesitant to use, threaten, or punish others to accomplish this. She bosses around underlings like Grubber, uses brute force on the citizens of Klugetown, takes Capper as her prisoner, and destroys Captain Celaeno's airship for insubordination. Toward the end of the film, however, being betrayed by the Storm King and saved by Twilight Sparkle causes Tempest to have such a drastic change of heart that she sacrifices herself to defeat the Storm King once and for all before be revived in flesh and blood. Though she still laments her broken horn, Tempest accepts Twilight's friendship and joins her new friends in celebrating. In other follow-up material such as The Great Princess Caper, she is also kinder toward Grubber. In Tempest's Tale, she is shown to feel out of place in Ponyville (due to how "sunny" it is there), and helps others during her travels in order to atone for her past misdeeds. She is quite blunt and cynical, openly telling Princess Cadance to her face that she believes she represents everything that is wrong with Equestria. She also shows resentment and bitterness toward Glitter Drops for the events of their youth, becoming outraged when Glitter Drops saves her from an Ursa Minor. After Glitter Drops admits how guilty she feels about what happened, and shows her skills while tracking the Ursa Major, Tempest realizes she misjudged her old friend, and reconciles with her, even allowing her to call Tempest by her childhood nickname, "Fizzy".

Appearance[]

Tempest is a unicorn with a purple coat and a magenta mane. Unlike most unicorns, her horn is completely broken, due to being a striked and attacked by an Usra, and a scar on her right eye, due being scratched by the latter. As a member of the Storm King's army, she wears black armor over her body and armor shoes over her hooves. She also wears a body suit all over her and it also covers her flank, making her cutie mark a mystery. In the credits, her body and hooves of armor were removed but she still wears her body suit. Her scar also to be appearing her left eye, probably a writing error or due to her always facing the left side of her face. She is taller than Twilight.

In the tv series, Tempest wore a black cloak and grey scarf.
