It is possible to escape Quan Chi, Kitana. I can aid you as Bi-Han aided me. (Kitana: You became too familiar with Bi-Han. Allowed emotion to corrupt you.) Emotion freed me!
~ Sareena to Kitana.

Sareena is a overarching heroine from the Mortal Kombat video game series. She is one of Quan Chi's three personal assassins ordered to kill Sub-Zero before he reached Quan Chi. She is a major antagonist-turned-deuteragonist of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, a minor character in Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and Mortal Kombat X, a supporting antagonist in Mortal Kombat 1, and the secondary antagonist of Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match.

Sareena was portrayed by Lia Montelongo in Mortal Kombat Mythologies, voiced by Danielle Nicolet in Mortal Kombat X, and Mara Junot in Mortal Kombat 1.

History[]

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero[]

In Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, she is "fractionally faster and a more accomplished fighter than her fellow assassins." After being spared by Sub-Zero, she assists him in defeating Quan Chi. After expressing her desire to escape the Netherrealm with him, she is shot in the back by Shinnok.

First Timeline[]

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance/Tournament Edition[]

As it is later revealed in Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition the attack destroyed her human form and that her essence was then banished as punishment for her betrayal.

After years of torture, Sareena escapes the Netherrealm in her human appearance before Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and managed to retain her human form by using the magical energy of Outworld. She encounters the younger Sub-Zero; the brother of the one she met before. Feeling he owed her for helping his brother, Sub-Zero grants her sanctuary with the Lin Kuei back on Earthrealm.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

During the Konquest mode, during Shujinko's quest, he encountered Sareena during her attempts to flee the Brotherhood of Shadow, and paid Shujinko to keep her safe.

As revealed in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon Sareena followed after Sub-Zero when he went after Noob Saibot and Smoke in the Netherrealm, and together they defeated the corrupted Lin Kuei. Due to returning to the Netherrealm, however, Sareena loses her human form and returns to her true demon self, which led to Sub-Zero unwittingly attacking her. Sareena fled to the depths of the Netherrealm, not wanting to harm him.

Mortal Komabat: Armageddon[]

However, Noob Saibot, Smoke, and her former master, Quan Chi, who demanded she provide them information about the Lin Kuei, later attacked her. At first, Sareena refused, determined to remain loyal to Sub-Zero. But Quan Chi then cast his dark sorcery upon her, returning her to her human form and then convincing her that she can never be good and that she is simply a pure evil demon. Swayed by Quan Chi's corruption, she agreed to serve him once again.

In the Konquest mode, Sareena, Kia and Jataaka are ordered by Quan Chi to kill Taven, but all three assassins are defeated by Taven, and Sareena was spared, leaving her free of Quan Chi. After the battle, Sareena would then join the Forces of Light in the Battle of Armageddon. In her non canon ending, she was left unconscious after defeating Blaze, and was revived by Sub-Zero. The powers of Blaze granted her the ability of Cryomancy, and froze Quan Chi solid, imprisoning him in the Lin Kuei temple forever.

Second Timeline[]

In the rebooted timeline, a version of the events of Mythologies occurred, which led to Sareena being freed from the Netherrealm. Sareena would align herself with Earthrealm's defenders, acting as the Special Forces's Netherrealm consultant.

Mortal Kombat X[]

In Mortal Kombat X, Sareena assists Jax, Kenshi, and the other Special Forces in their mission to infiltrate Quan Chi's fortress and capture him in the Netherrealm. She advises them that Quan Chi is not at his fullest power without Shinnok. During the battle between the Special Forces and Quan Chi and his revenants, Sareena fights with the undead Kitana. She is trying to convince her to free away from the corruption, similar to how Bi-Han has done for her. Unfortunately, her aid failed and was knocked out as a result, only to be saved by Jax. Quan Chi and his revenants escaped. The Special Forces attained severe wounds. Sareena aids the wounded soldiers. When Jax is about to walk to Quan Chi's fortress alone, Sareena warns him that he could die, though this doesn't stop him as he has been killed before.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

Although Sareena was neither seen or mentioned in the Story campaign, she only appears in Kabal's non-canon ending, as his wife and them having two children.

New Era[]

Personality[]

Unlike the other native denizens of the NetherRealm, Sareena dislikes the harsh environment and sought liberation, something she did achieve by aiding Bi-Han in his quest to thwart Quan Chi and Shinnok.

Later games show that Bi-Han's efforts had a lasting effect on her, to the point where Sareena allies with Kuai Liang and becomes a part of the Lin Kuei, acting as an informant to the Special Forces, as well as being willing to help the Revenant Warriors be restored to normal (like Kitana).

While it's not shown, but it's implied that whenever Sareena is in her demon form, loses all sense of control over herself and is wary about her nature as a result. Because of this, Sareena tries to avoid that from happening.

Quotes[]

You are still a mortal... that means you can escape the Netherrealm. Take me with you... I've waited an eternity to escape.
~ Sareena to Sub-Zero.
The Brotherhood of Shadow are searching for me? This is not good. I must leave this place now. Shujinko, please do not report back to them. I realize this puts your life in peril. Take these Koins as compensation.
~ Sareena in Mortal Kombat: Deception: Konquest mode.
Once one of Quan Chi's elite lieutenants, the demon Sareena had a cage of heart, offering to help Sub-Zero to defeat her sorcerer master.
~ Sareena's biography in Mortal Kombat Armageddon.
He ordered me to wait for him there as he departed for the Netherrealm. Instead, I followed him -- I couldn't bring myself to allow him to come to harm.

Trivia[]

  • She is the second female character of the series whose alignment was changed from evil to good, the first being Sindel after she was rescued from Shao Kahn's control over her.
    • Also of note, she and Sindel had the same portrayers, Lia Montelongo.
  • She is the first character originating from the Netherrealm to fight for the Forces of Light.
  • Just like other background characters, Sareena's minor, background, or cameo appearance is something that would not be mentioned in the current timeline on Mortal Kombat Wiki because her appearance and others are to short.
  • Sareena appears in Mortal Kombat (2011) as one of the fighters in the Pit background, usually facing of against Daegon, Reiko, Kenshi or Frost.
  • Considering the fact that Sareena mentions Bi-Han helping her in the MKX story mode, proves that the events of Mythologies had occurred in the rebooted timeline as well.
  • In Mortal Kombat 11, Sareena cameo appears in Kabal's ending as his wife, with two children. This relationship is mentioned again in Kabal's character tower to where it say "Sareena won't commit to him, unless he becomes the new leader of the Black Dragon Clan".
  • In MKX, Sareena's outfit is rather revealing, despite the game-onwards toning down on skimpy attires.
  • Sareena's demonic form wasn't fully shown or revealed until Mortal Kombat 1.
