Artanis! WAIT! I am not your enemy....
~ Kerrigan to Artanis before fighting the hybrid.
I am the swarm. Armies will be shattered. Worlds will burn. Now at last, on this world, vengeance shall be mine. For I am the Queen of Blades.
~ Kerrigan leading the Zerg.
It doesn’t matter. Sarah Kerrigan, Queen of Blades...you don’t understand. Maybe you can never understand. I’ve always been a destroyer of things. Anything I touch, anything I care about...that’s why they picked me, Jim. Because I’m a destroyer of things...
~ Kerrigan to Raynor.

Sarah Kerrigan is one of the central characters of the StarCraft real time strategy video game franchise. She was a powerful Terran Ghost who served as an officer in the Sons of Korhal resistance group fighting against the Terran Dominion until she was betrayed by Arcturus Mengsk and left for dead at the hands of the Zerg. She was later infested by them and converted into one of their commanders, eventually succeeding the Overmind as ruler of the Zerg. She appears as one of the main protagonist in StarCraft 1, (until being infested by the Zerg at Mission 9) and in Starcraft 2: Heart of The Swarm (redeemed at the end of Wings of Liberty).

She was voiced by Glynnis Talken Campbell in StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War, and Tricia Helfer in StarCraft II onward, and Vanessa Marshall in Heroes of the Storm.

Biography[]

StarCraft[]

Kerrigan first appears when she is assigned to join Raynor with freeing Antigua Prime from the grip of the Terran Confederacy with the Sons of Korhal after Raynor was rescued from Confederate custody and the colonial militia on Mar Sara were evacuated by the Sons of Korhal before the Protoss glassed the planet to wipe out the Zerg infestation. After rendezvousing with Raynor and making her way to the rebels' command center, she executes the Confederate officer overseeing them, allowing the rebels to enter open revolt and help take down General Duke's Alpha Squadron base across the river from the rebels' base. Shortly thereafter, Duke makes an emergency transmission as his flagship, Norad II, has crash-landed after being attacked by kamikaze Zerg Scourges and wounded in orbit by them.

Mengsk: Jim, I want you to go in and save that ship.
Raynor: I'm positive I didn't hear that right.
Kerrigan: Arcturus, have you lost your mind?!
~ Raynor and Kerrigan unable to accept Mengsk wants them to save Duke

Despite Raynor and Kerrigan's uneasiness with Mengsk planning a rescue mission, they agree to rescue the general, and Duke agrees to become an ally of the Sons of Korhal. With the Terran Confederacy having lost Duke and his Alpha Squadron, they send Delta Squadron to Antigua Prime to deal with things, but this works in Mengsk's favor as he has Kerrigan plant a Psi Emitter in their base, leading the Zerg to attack and overwhelm the Confederates while the Sons of Korhal and their new allies in the Antigua rebels escape before Tassadar arrives to glass the planet with his Protoss fleet.

From there, the Sons of Korhal move on Tarsonis, the capital planet of the Terran Confederacy. After Duke takes out the Delta and Omega Squadrons defending the orbital platforms with the Norad II and Sons of Korhal support forces, Kerrigan is shocked when Mengsk has Duke plant Psi Emitters to lure the Zerg to Tarsonis to wipe out the Confederacy in a single stroke. Unfortunately, Tassadar arrives with his fleet to take out the Zerg, forcing Kerrigan to be assigned the detail of defending the Zerg from the Protoss. When the Protoss are routed, Zerg begin attacking in force at Kerrigan's position in New Gettysburg. She calls for evac, but Mengsk refuses, to Raynor's shock and horror, as Mengsk personally wanted revenge on Kerrigan for her part in the assassination of his family. Realizing that no help is coming, Kerrigan surrenders herself to the Zerg and they surround her.

Captured by the Zerg, Kerrigan is found to be a perfect vassal for the Zerg Overmind, and is transformed into an Infested Terran, becoming the self-proclaimed Queen of Blades, loyal to the Overmind. After raiding a Terran Dominion science vessel, the Amerigo, to undo her Ghost conditioning to unlock her full psychic powers, Kerrigan goes after Tassadar when he appears to her on Char, but this was a decoy move as the Tassadar she fought was a hallucination to allow Zeratul time to assassinate Garm Brood Cerebrate Zasz, with his Dark Templar powers preventing the Overmind from resurrecting Zasz. While Kerrigan stays on Char to hunt down the Dark Templar, the Overmind takes the bulk of the Zerg Swarm to Aiur to invade the Protoss homeworld.

However, despite the Overmind's success with manifesting on the planet surface, he is slain by Tassadar when the Templar combines the energy of both Templar and Dark Templar through his body to slay the abomination. With the Overmind's death, Kerrigan regained her free will, but now sought to become sole dominant ruler of the Zerg.

Brood War[]

After the death of the Overmind, Kerrigan regained her free will, but now was in civil war with the surviving Zerg Cerebrates under Senior Cerebrate Daggoth's command. With the Overmind dead, Daggoth commanded several of the Cerebrates to merge together into a new Overmind, which should it reach maturity, would take control of Kerrigan again, just like the first one. Not wanting that to happen, Kerrigan secretly takes control of the mind of Raszagal, matriarch of the Dark Templar, and later arrives on Shakuras to meet with the Protoss just after they slayed two Cerebrates belonging to Daggoth that guarded the Xel'Naga Temple on Shakuras. Despite their hostility, Raszagal allows her asylum to tell them about the second Overmind and her willingness to aid them in return for keeping the second Overmind from taking control of her. Despite their hesitance, they agree to ally with Kerrigan, but shortly after they secure the Uraj and Khalis Crystals, Judicator Aldaris, enraged by the alliance with the Queen of Blades, launches an open revolt against Raszagal with those Templar forces from Aiur still loyal to him. Although he is bested in combat, before Aldaris can tell Artanis and Zeratul the truth about Raszagal and Kerrigan brainwashing her, Kerrigan herself arrives, and with her Zerg Lurkers, slays Aldaris herself to keep the truth hidden. Angered by her interference, Zeratul banishes her from Shakuras, but Kerrigan accepts it with dignity, as the Protoss are still doing her a favor with taking down Daggoth's renegade Zerg for her.

Later, she arrives on Char with Samir Duran to confront Admiral Gerard DuGalle, leader of the United Earth Directorate Expeditionary Fleet, to show she's the leader of the Zerg, and the Overmind he just captured is her property, hinting that there are several groups in the Koprulu Sector who are allied against the UED with her, and DuGalle had better savor his victory while he can, because she'll be taking it away soon enough.

Allied with Raynor, Mengsk, and Fenix, Kerrigan begins the process of taking out the UED by first saving her hive clusters on Tarsonis before her Zerg and Raynor's Raiders assault Braxis to take out the Psi Disrupter there. With it gone, Kerrigan stages a resource raid on Moria to prepare for the assault on Korhal to take it back from the UED. Once her coffers are loaded, Kerrigan attacks Korhal, and despite the UED having some of the Slave Broods under their control defending the planet, they are swiftly routed, allowing Mengsk to reclaim his capital. However, Kerrigan then makes her move to double-cross Mengsk and Raynor, and has her forces ambush the Raiders and Dominion while they have their guards down. In the process, Duke is slain when his flagship, Norad III, is destroyed, and Fenix meets a similar fate once his Dragoon is demolished. Both Mengsk and Raynor are furious at this treachery, but while Mengsk can't do much while he rebuilds the Dominion, Raynor personally swears to hunt Kerrigan down and see her dead for this. Weary of her slaughter, Kerrigan returns to Tarsonis to rest.

Her rest is short-lived when the UED arrives with their Slave Broods to attack her, but upon noticing that they brought in support staff, indicating the UED are struggling to control their Slave Broods this far from the Overmind, Kerrigan takes advantage and sends the UED fleeing from Tarsonis with their tails between their legs. With that, she decides the time has come to eliminate the second Overmind, and heads to Shakuras to kidnap Raszagal. After Duran is able to cause the entire power grid of the capital of Talemaetros to overload and destroy the city, Raszagal is kidnapped in the confusion. When Zeratul follows Kerrigan to Char, she makes it clear her ultimatum: Kill the second Overmind, and she'll return Raszagal to the Dark Templar. Forced to agree, Zeratul delivers the kill to the Second Overmind after it retreated into its cocoon to recover, but when he asks Raszagal if she's ready to go home, she refuses. Sensing Kerrigan had something to do with it, Zeratul takes Raszagal to his base to prepare to return to Shakuras via dimensional recall, placing her in a Stasis Cell. When Kerrigan attacks before they are ready to retreat, Zeratul is forced to personally slay the Dark Templar Matriarch. This frees Raszagal from Kerrigan's influence, and she dubs Zeratul her successor before dying. Surprised by Zeratul's move, Kerrigan lets him go, basking in the irony of how Zeratul will now have to bear the shame and guilt of killing Raszagal on his shoulders for eternity.

However, Kerrigan is on the orbital platform Char Aleph above Char when she comes under attack from three fleets, led by DuGalle, Mengsk, and Artanis, all seeking to put an end to her once and for all. Despite the odds, Kerrigan is able to hold off their forces and retaliate, leading to where when their bases are destroyed, Artanis and Mengsk retreat, swearing this isn't over, but DuGalle isn't so lucky. Kerrigan gives him a head start to try and make it back to Earth, before sending the Swarm to annihilate what is left of the UED Expeditionary Fleet, leaving no survivors. With the destruction of the UED fleet, and Mengsk and Artanis rebuilding their forces, Kerrigan is now the supreme power and ruler in the Koprulu Sector, or as she now called herself, "The Queen B***h of the Universe".

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty[]

After the Brood War, Kerrigan remained silent for several years, before suddenly reemerging to launch an attack with her Zerg again. As it turns out, when Zeratul meets with Raynor, he reveals that Kerrigan is to be the savior of all the Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss in the Koprulu Sector against a more sinister foe, and if she dies, they will all perish to the Hybrids. To that end, Raynor begins collecting pieces of a Xel'Naga Keystone that can be used to de-infest Kerrigan, discovering that the head benefactor of the Moebius Foundation is actually Emperor Arcturus' son and heir, Crown Prince Valerian Mengsk. Aided by the Dominion forces under his command and that of General Horace Warfield, Raynor returns to Char to unleash the Keystone on Kerrigan's forces. Though the Queen of Blades puts up a furious fight to prevent the Keystone's activation, it is for naught as the Keystone reaches full power and unleashes a massive wave that decimate the Zerg hive clusters. When Raynor enters the primary hive to find Kerrigan, he finds her having indeed been de-infested. The only traits of her Queen of Blades appearance that remain being her hair still being like that of insect antennae or legs instead of returning to her original human red hair. However, Raynor finds that his old friend, Tychus Findlay, had made a deal with Arcturus: If Tychus killed Sarah, he'd win his freedom, but if he failed, his power suit would kill him instead since it essentially became his coffin when he was released under Arcturus' authorization from prison. Remembering what Zeratul told him, Raynor blocks the shot with his own power suit and uses the bullet he had been saving for Mengsk to kill Tychus. After that, Raynor carried Sarah out of the hive and into the sunlight, taking her to the waiting dropship as the Dominion and Raider forces continued to guard the skies overhead.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm[]

After her de-infestation, Kerrigan is taken to a research facility by Valerian and Raynor to see if her powers over the Zerg were completely gone. Unfortunately, the facility is raided by Dominion forces under Arcturus, led by Nova Terra. Though Kerrigan and Valerian escape, Nova captures Raynor and takes him prisoner. Arcturus later has UNN announce that Raynor has been executed, infuriating Kerrigan and making her seek vengeance on the Emperor of the Terran Dominion. First things first though, Kerrigan returns to Char to reclaim leadership of the Zerg, gaining the loyalty of Broodmother Zagara alongside Izsha, the Zerg maintaining Kerrigan's Leviathan, and Abathur, the Zerg in charge of maintaining Zerg mutations and evolutions. It is during this time that Kerrigan attacks the Dominion forces still on Char after de-infesting her, including General Warfield. When she confronts the wounded general in the remains of his command center, Warfield pleads with her to allow his wounded and combat-ineffective troops to flee in an act of mercy. When Kerrigan is unresponsive to his pleas, he believes that she's still the cold-hearted merciless Queen of Blades from before, but when he taunts her over what Raynor would say regarding her now, this enrages Kerrigan to use her powers to fatally wound Warfield with the piece of metal lodged in his suit. However, she then realizes Warfield is right, and signals her Zerg to pull back, allowing the transports full of wounded and vulnerable troops to flee. Her first sign she's no longer the bloodthirsty monster she originally was. (Doing certain missions before this can have Kerrigan confront Warfield as her Primal Queen of Blades self instead, really driving home the point of Warfield's insults before Kerrigan ends his life, but spares his men.)

She is later confronted by Zeratul, who tells her that to defeat Arcturus, Amon and the Hybrids, she needs to travel to the original birthplace of the Zerg, the planet Zerus. There she will find the power to defeat Arcturus and be ready to face Amon. Following Zeratul's advice, Kerrigan goes to Zerus, awakening the Ancient One Zurvan, who reveals how the Primal Zerg evolved on Zerus way before the events that led to the current state of the ones Kerrigan leads that also served the Overmind, and still do today. Zurvan further explains that to acquire the power she seeks, she would need to travel to the First Spawning Pool and use its power to become a Primal Infested Terran herself.

Despite knowing that her humanity would be lost again, Kerrigan agreed to this. She allowed Zurvan to lead her to the first spawning pool where the Zerg had first evolved. Against Abathur's advice, she entered the pool to begin her transformation. Before sealing herself within a chrysalis, she ordered her minions to defend her until she either emerged from the chrysalis or was dead.

She hoped that in her new form, Amon would exert no influence over her mind. The primal Zerg ferociously assaulted Kerrigan's position, but Kerrigan's Zerg held them off long enough for the transformation to be complete. Kerrigan emerged from the chrysalis as the Primal Queen of Blades; making her presence known to all of Zerus. She was an infested Terran once more, but now with primal Zerg DNA mixed with her Terran DNA, leaving her 100% purified of any remaining influence of Amon she still had since her original infestation by the Overmind and de-infestation on Char by Raynor and the Keystone.

Upon returning to her leviathan, Kerrigan was met by Dehaka, a primal Zerg pack leader who wished to join her Swarm, pledging to serve her in exchange for new sources of essence. Kerrigan accepted Dehaka and his pack into the Swarm. Dehaka informed her that the other primal pack leaders would not submit to Kerrigan and thus, had to be eliminated. Although Yagdra, Kraith, Slivan and their respective packs fought viciously against Kerrigan's Swarm, they were ultimately no match for the reborn Queen of Blades.

After collecting their essences, Kerrigan was confronted by Zurvan, who initially acclaimed her for her victory. He then turned on her, with the intention of consuming her essence; explaining that he had "no allegiance but to self". Kerrigan expected his challenge and killed Zurvan, thus fully claiming the power of all Zerus. With her mission on Zerus complete, Kerrigan ordered Izsha to prepare the leviathan to return to the Koprulu Sector.

The Queen's Return[]

Kerrigan's broodmothers delivered a communicator, and, on cue, a message from Arcturus Mengsk was delivered. Mengsk told her that Raynor was alive, but that if she brought her Swarm to bear against Korhal or him, Raynor would be killed. Kerrigan couldn't sense Raynor, but swore that she'd rescue him, and set a course for Dominion space.

Skygeirr[]

Kerrigan was contacted by an unknown entity, who claimed to know of Kerrigan's desire to topple Mengsk. The figure told her that her chances of defeating Mengsk were nullified as long as his hybrid were alive and that defeating them was a top priority. Kerrigan tracked the figure to Skygeirr Station, and upon arrival, she questioned its identity. It revealed itself to be an infested Alexi Stukov, former Vice Admiral of the United Earth Directorate Expeditionary Fleet that had tried to take over the Koprulu Sector during the Brood War, which Kerrigan decimated down to the last ship, leaving no survivors to return to Earth and tell the UED of what transpired in the sector.

He told her that Narud was in fact a shapeshifter who "had worn many faces over the years" and served Amon. Stukov claimed that Narud had made him into whom he was and that he was the victim of countless experiments by Narud. To destroy the lab, Kerrigan first needed to destroy the Dominion garrison protecting the lab's topmost level, which was protected by infantry and heavy weapons. To this end, she utilized infestors to spawn infested Terrans at the garrison's complement.

The Terrans used gas to wipe out the infested, but there was a delay between each usage of the gas. In the end, Kerrigan's zerg destroyed the garrison and then entered the lab. On the lower level of the lab, Narud unleashed eight hybrid dominators to psionically sap Kerrigan's life. They were defeated, as was the Dominion garrison entrenched at the same level. Kerrigan then ordered the Swarm to flood the remaining levels of the lab and eradicate everything within.

However, the lab was built atop a xel'naga temple, and here the Swarm encountered Protoss Tal'darim warriors who worshiped Amon and served him. Narud personally tried to kill Kerrigan with a null-zone, which Kerrigan countered with her own. Narud drew power from several xel'naga temples located throughout the level.

With Kerrigan locked in combat with Narud, Stukov was left to lead the Zerg to destroy the temples. The Protoss attacked the Zerg, reinforced by hybrid reavers, but ultimately, the Zerg prevailed. Eventually, Stukov deactivated all of the xel'naga temples and Narud lost the null-zone battle. He retreated even deeper into the temple, where he was confronted by Kerrigan.

Morphing first into Raynor and then Kerrigan's pre-infestation form before she was captured by the Zerg on Tarsonis at New Gettysburg, he nearly killed her with a psi-blade but in turn, Kerrigan fatally wounded him with her wings. Before dying, Narud told her that Amon was alive, and that she would encounter him soon. It was the truth, for as Kerrigan looked into Narud's mind, she realized that Amon had indeed been resurrected.

Kerrigan was brought back to the leviathan to be healed. She revealed what she had learned from Narud, that Amon was alive, and was a threat to the Zerg. Once Mengsk was dealt with, they would have to face him in turn.

Reuniting with Raynor[]

Kerrigan made contact with the Hyperion. Matt Horner and Valerian Mengsk were shocked to see that Kerrigan had returned to her Zerg form, but agreed to help her find Jim. After retrieving Colonel Orlan from Mira Han, they forced Orlan to hack into the Dominion's network and locate Raynor. They learned that Jim was being held aboard the prison ship Moros which was currently docked at Atlas Station. Kerrigan launched an assault on the Moros and boarded it.

Mengsk attempted to kill both of them by triggering a self-destruct without the crew's knowledge, but Kerrigan was able to use her leviathan to stabilize the section where Raynor was being held. Raynor was horrified to see that Kerrigan had willingly re-infested herself, and brushed off her justifications by reminding her of Fenix's murder, as well as the millions of others she had murdered in cold blood as the original Queen of Blades, to which she offered no defense.

Raynor: Sarah...(sees she's become the Queen of Blades again)...No...
Kerrigan: I had to get you out.
Raynor: What have you done?!
Kerrigan: What I...had to.
Raynor: Tell that to Fenix! Tell it to the millions you butchered!
~ Raynor furious to see his efforts to de-infest Sarah have been all for nothing

Kerrigan gave him his gun, put it to her forehead, and told him that he was both the one who swore to kill the Queen of Blades and the one who believed in her. She asked him if he still believed in her. After some hesitation, Raynor fired...again and again. Yet for all that, he couldn't, or wouldn't, hit her. Kerrigan told Raynor that she would always love him, but he coldly declared their relationship was over before leaving the cell to rejoin his Raiders.

Vengeance[]

With Narud and his hybrids destroyed and Raynor saved, Kerrigan ordered the swarm to invade Korhal. The swarm surrounded Korhal with dozens of leviathans, preventing reinforcements from getting through.

Kerrigan's first priority was to destroy Korhal's planetary defenses. She had Abathur devise the bile launcher, a modified virophage that could destroy the defense cannons from a long range. However, the launchers themselves had to be planted on the surface. Thus, Kerrigan unleashed millions of drop pods upon Korhal. Though many were shot down, a sufficient number landed on the outskirts of Augustgrad. Kerrigan herself entered the fray and secured the landing site of the bile launchers that eventually destroyed the Dominion defense, allowing the rest of the swarm to land and drive the Dominion into the city.

At this time, Mengsk activated his newest weapon: The Psi Destroyer. This device emitted a field that could kill the Zerg through their psionic connection to a hive mind. Having anticipated this, however, Kerrigan, sent Dehaka and his primal Zerg (who had no hive mind connections) to take out the Destroyer's power generators. The swarm then eradicated the dormant weapon and its defenders.

After conferring the final attack plans with her lieutenants and one last communication with the Hyperion, Kerrigan invaded Augustgrad. On Prince Valerian's request, Kerrigan slowed her invasion to let Korhal's civilians evacuate unscathed. The Zerg encountered heavy resistance from the Dominion's elite guard, who possessed enhanced weapons, as well as the Odin.

Unexpectedly however, Raynor and the Hyperion came to Kerrigan's aid, having seen that, due to Kerrigan willing to avoid collateral damage with letting the civvies escape unharmed, she was not the same merciless Queen of Blades as Raynor originally remembered, being a much more compassionate one as her primal self. With the combined might of Raynor, Zagara, Dehaka and Stukov, Kerrigan eradicated Mengsk's defenders and breached the palace. She ordered Zagara to take command of the swarm while she entered the palace to deal with Mengsk alone.

Inside the palace, Kerrigan cut her way through Mengsk's final defenses and made her way to Mengsk's office at the top where the emperor was expecting her. He brought his last weapon to bear: the xel'naga artifact, though this time he planned to use it to destroy her directly. Mengsk used the device to disable and torment Kerrigan while gloating, calling Kerrigan his greatest failure, while she laid on the floor helpless and at his mercy. Unfortunately for the tyrant, his gloating allowed Raynor to intervene in the nick of time; he crushed the control for the artifact and threw Mengsk across the room. He brought his revolver to bear to kill Mengsk once and for all, but as Kerrigan recovered and got back to her feet, Raynor, seeing the fury in her eyes, stood down and braced himself for the worst as he allowed Kerrigan to end the Terran Dominion Emperor's life herself.

Enraged, Kerrigan impaled Mengsk to the wall by his shoulders and after a final bitter exchange of words, overflowed him with her psionic energies. Mengsk exploded violently, blasting a massive hole through the wall behind. Though she departed Korhal immediately following Mengsk's death, she thanked Raynor "for everything" he'd given her before she left.

Her vengeance fulfilled, all that remained for Kerrigan was to send the Swarm against its true enemy, Amon.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void[]

During Amon's war against the denizens of the Milky Way, Kerrigan was attacked by a hybrid reaver, which was (at least temporarily) able to gain the upperhand over her. She also encountered Artanis during the conflict. In the end of Epilogue, she began exterminating Amon for good.

This all came when she united with Raynor and Artanis to launch a joint expedition of Terran/Zerg/Protoss forces into the Void to deal with Amon. After dealing with the defenses sent after them by Narud, Stukov had the honor of getting revenge on Narud/Duran for killing him back on Braxis in the Psi Disrupter with ending Duran's life personally and permanently. With Duran/Narud dead, the Xel'Naga Ouros appears before them to explain that Amon can only be defeated by a Xel'Naga, and Kerrigan, the Primal Queen of Blades, fulfills this criteria. Ouros offers to transfer his essence into Kerrigan so she can ascend and become a Xel'Naga herself, and Raynor, Zagara, and Artanis protect her until the transfer is complete. Once Ouros finishes the transfer and peacefully dies, Kerrigan transforms from the Primal Queen of Blades into a Xel'Naga, taking the appearance of a fiery angel. After exchanging goodbyes with Raynor in a vision where she was her original human self, Raynor tells her to end this once and for all, and Kerrigan departs to face Amon.

Aided by the joint Terran/Zerg/Protoss coalition, Kerrigan takes out Amon's defenses before facing the corrupt Xel'Naga himself, and delivers the death blow to him while Raynor, Zagara, and Artanis take their forces and flee the Void, returning safely to the Koprulu Sector. Kerrigan is presumed lost after taking down Amon.

However, as life in the Koprulu Sector returned to normal, Raynor is back in his usual hangout bar on Mar Sara, when a figure that looks like Kerrigan as her original human self appears in the doorway, asking Raynor if he's ready to get out of here. Raynor goes with her, and is never seen again, leaving his Marshall badge behind.

Trivia[]

  • On the battle.net web site, there is a hidden image of Kerrigan saying "Help me Jim Raynor... you're my only hope!" This is a possible reference to Princess Leia from Star Wars.
