Heroic Overview

Bloody hell!
~ Ron's catchphrase.
I'm the sixth in our family to go to Hogwarts. You could say I got a lot to live up to. Bill and Charlie have already left — Bill was Head Boy and Charlie was captain of Quidditch. Now Percy's a prefect. Fred and George mess around a lot, but they still get really good marks and everyone thinks they're really funny. Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but if I do, it's no big deal, because they did it first.
~ Ron regarding his family and their expectations.

Ronald Bilius "Ron" Weasley (born March 1, 1980) is the deuteragonist of the Harry Potter franchise.

He is the sixth son of Molly and Arthur Weasley. He is also the younger brother of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, and George, and the elder brother of Ginny. Ron and his brothers and sister live in The Burrow where Harry Potter and Hermione Granger stay quite often. Ron began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1991 and was sorted into Gryffindor house. He soon became best friends with fellow student Harry Potter and soon befriended Hermione Granger, who also became his girlfriend and later wife.

At the end of the series, Ron marries Hermione and has two children with her named Rose and Hugo.

He is portrayed by Rupert Grint in all eight Harry Potter films, and by Paul Thornley in the theatrical production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Ronald Bilius "Ron" Weasley was born on March 1st, 1980 at the Ottery St Catchpole, Devon, Great Britain to Arthur Weasley and Molly Prewett. Ron received his middle name from his uncle Bilius, and his maternal uncles, Fabian and Gideon Prewett, were killed by a group of Death Eaters.

He was the younger brother to Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred and George Weasley, being the fifth son of Arthur and Molly, and the older brother to his only sister, Ginevra "Ginny" Weasley. The Weasley family lived in the outskirts of Devon at The Burrow, where Molly taught all of her children home educated since the family were not wealthy. Despite the family being ridiculed by most wealthy families, such as the Malfoy's, Ron and the Weasley's loved each other dearly.

During his youth, Ron was teased by Fred and George (both twins), who caused his fear of spiders by transfiguring his teddy bear into a spider as a joke. Fred and George also teased him by doing other things, such as trying to make him take an Unbreakable Vow (Ron remembers his mother chasing the twins around with her broomstick), and tricking him into eating an Acid Pop, which burned a hole in the middle of his tongue.

When he was young, Ron inherited a rat from his older brother Percy, and decided to make him his pet, giving him the name "Scabbers". Unbeknownst to Ron or the Weasley family, the rat was actually Peter Pettigrew (an unregistered Animagus), who betrayed the Potter family and was a servant of Lord Voldemort. By 1990, Ron learned that he would become a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as his family all were former students and members of House Gryffindor.

Harry Potter Series[]

The Philosopher's Stone[]

Going on the Hogwarts Express, Ron met and befriended Harry Potter, who was a legend among the wizarding world since he defeated Lord Voldemort. The two shared a carriage together on the train, and also met Hermione Granger, a gifted individual who was born to two non-magical parents.

At Hogwarts, Ron was defended by Harry against Draco Malfoy, who would become a enemy for the two and Hermione during their years at the school. Ron and Harry were both sorted into House Gryffindor alongside Hermione, but Ron didn't like her, and ridiculed her for being a know-it-all and having no friends. Hermione overheard Ron's statements and cried in the girls bathroom, but Ron and Harry rescued her from a troll (that, unknown to them, had been lured into the bathroom by Professor Quirinus Quirrell, who had a talent to talk to trolls). The three became close friends after the incident, and investigated the tale behind the Philosopher's Stone.

The trio thought that their potions teacher, Severus Snape, was planning on stealing the stone, and Ron sacrificed himself during a game of chess to have Harry and Hermione get into the chambers. Harry would learn that it was Professor Quirrell was trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone for Lord Voldemort (also jinxed Harry's broomstick during the Quidditch match against Slytherin earlier), who also acted at the Dark Lord's host. Harry managed to stop Quirrell, and the trio were awarded House Points alongside Neville Longbottom, allowing Gryffindor win the House Cup.

The Chamber of Secrets[]

In 1992, Ron decided to get Harry from the Dursley's after not hearing from him the whole summer, and was assisted by Fred and George in his scheme. Harry stayed at the Burrow until they had to travel to the Hogwarts Express, where they were unable to go through due to the manipulations of the house-elf Dobby. Ron decided to take his father's car to get them to Hogwarts, where they were attacked by the Whomping Willow until they landed in the Forbidden Forest. Despite nearly being kicked out of Hogwarts for causing the public eye to see a flying car, Ron and Harry managed to stay there. During his second year, Ron couldn't use his wand due to damaging it in the car crash, and it backfired on him when he attempted to curse Draco Malfoy when he taunted Hermione Granger for being a "Mudblood", a highly offensive word that meant to be Muggle-born (born to two non-magical parents).

When the Chamber of Secrets was opened in the school, many students and staff were victims of "Heir of Slytherin's" attacks. The trio theorized that it the heir was Draco due to his hatred of "mudbloods", and Hermione created a Polyjuice Potion to have Ron and Harry be impersonate Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. The group found the outcome that Malfoy wasn't the heir, and Hermione turned into a human-cat due to mistaking Millicent Bulstrode's cat hair for her own. Hermione would also become a victim of the creature, but she also gave them clues that allowed Ron and Harry to deduce that the creature was a Basilisk. The two would then go out to the Forbidden Forest to speak with Aragog, who revealed that Rubeus Hagrid had nothing to do with opening the chamber.

Ron and Harry later learned that Ginny had been taken to the chamber, and the two decided to save her and give their information to their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart. However, the two found him trying to leave Hogwarts, and deduced that he was a fraud. The two forced him to venture into the chamber, where Lockhart stole Ron's wand and attempted to use a spell to erase their memories. Ron's wand backfired, causing Lockhart to lose his memory, and Ron decided to stay with Gilderoy while Harry went into the chamber. After the incident, Ron was awarded for his bravery, and the Basilisk was slain by Harry with the Sword of Gryffindor.

Personality[]

...Ron's got all those brothers to compete against at home and you're his best friend, and you're really famous --he's always shunted to one side whenever people see you, and he puts up with you and he never mentions it...
~ A description of Ron.

Ronald is something of the runt of the litter of the Weasley family. Growing up with five older brothers, he has a need to prove himself to the rest of his family which is why he was happy to become a prefect and whenever he looked into the Mirror of Erised, he would himself winning a Quidditch match which ironically he began to play in the Sixth year.

Ron has a stereotypical relationship with his elder brothers, except for Percy whom he utterly despised as he left the family to join the Ministry of Magic. Ron interacts the most with Fred and George, the two constantly antagonize him which was shown when they mocked Ron over dancing with McGonagall and charging him twice as much for a practical joke item at their store but despite this he was left screaming in tears when Fred had died during the Battle of Hogwarts. He was the older brother of his sister Ginny and was incredibly protective over her, so much that he instantly despised any boy who even thought about dating her (with the exception of his best friend Harry). His love for Ginny was so strong he was willing to open the Chamber of Secrets to rescue her.

Ron can be quite jealous at times. He suffered from arachnophobia and an inferiority complex, he was pathologically afraid of spiders and was left petrified when entering the Black Forest's nest of spiders. In Lupin's class when being confronted by a Boggart, it took the form of a giant arachnid. When finally retrieving the Sword of Godric Gryffindor and Tom Riddle's Horcrux peers into his mind, it is revealed that Ron's beloved mother wanted a daughter instead of himself which furthers his need to prove himself. This inferiority complex pans out when he developed romantic feelings for his close friend Hermione Granger and thought Harry felt the same way, Ron truly believed he had no chance with "the Chosen One" and caused him to be cold and even aggressive towards his friend.

Despite his pure-blood status, Ron wasn't overly righteous and unlike the Malfoys he wasn't prejudiced to half-bloods such as Hermione. He would never have used the unforgivable word "Mudblood" and when Draco said this to Hermione, he attempted to hex the bully only for it to deflect back to him due to his broken wand.

At times Ron can be a "right foul git" as Harry liked to put it. When Harry's name was placed in the Goblet of Fire, he was left angered as his best friend didn't inform him that he did so and wanted worldwide fame all for himself while rudely telling him to "piss off" and becoming colder and distant towards Harry until it went as far that they wouldn't exchange two words to one another.

This had an effect on Hermione as well, she had to act as a peacekeeper between the two but eventually after seeing the first round in the Triwizard Tournament he apologizes for the way he acted. This only worsened when the three came into possession of Lord Voldemort's Horcrux which caused his jealousy and anger to worsen than ever until they point where he berates Harry and destroys their friendship only for him to regret it instantly after. Fortunately, Harry and Ron are able to mend their relationship after he saved his life.

Ron doesn't always take other people's feelings into consideration, he is either ignorant or just plain selfish. An example of this is during Harry and Ron's standoff during their fourth year and he didn't care about the strain it had on Hermione. Another time is when he began a relationship with Lavender in the sixth year and was ignorant to the fact that Hermione had a crush on him.

While Ron isn't always as fearless as Harry or Hermione and as such was the last person of the trio to actually say Lord Voldemort's name and stuck with He Who Shall Not Be Named or You-Know-Who (but this was mostly due to the fact that saying his name is a jinx). Ron is a loyal and even selfless boy who'd risk his life for life for his friends this was shown when Harry, himself and Hermione were searching for the Philosopher's Stone and to get closer they had to complete a giant game of chess so Hermione and Harry could pass which shows that he would put his own safety on the line for the greater good.

Ron is somewhat socially awkward and shy, on the fourth year he had difficulty asking for a date and when trying to ask Hermione out, he opens by saying "Hermione, you're a girl." He lacks confidence and because of this he wasn't above cheating, when he believed that Harry had spiked his juice with "liquid luck", he gulps the drink down but in reality it was never opened which shows that all Ron needs is self-confidence.

Ron can be slightly foul-mouthed at times, this was shown when he was angry at Harry for supposedly entering the Triwizard Tournament and told him to "piss off." He is quite hostile to Draco Malfoy, telling him to "shove off" and once calling him a "bastard."

Furthermore he is somewhat reckless, as when he broke Harry out of the Dursley's house using a flying car and then attempting to catch up with the Hogwarts Express with the same vehicle which causes them to be seen by seven muggles. This also shows during a Quidditch match and Harry's broom span out of control and he attempted to fix it despite the fact his wand was broken and the spell wouldn't work.

Trivia[]

  • Ron is seen as a puppet in the song Avada Kedavra in Castaras.
  • He is the only known pureblood wizard to have a Muggle driving license.
  • Ron's flaws tend to be exaggerated by some fans and he's often turned in a villain or a jerk in many fanfics, this made him the namer of the trope knows as "Ron the Death Eater".
