Rias Gremory is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Yuuto Kiba) of the High School DxD series. She is a Devil from the Gremory Clan with the title of the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess. She is a third-year student at Kuoh Academy, serving as the President of the Occult Research Club, and the school's number-one beauty, and one of Kuoh Academy's Two Great Ladies.
She is voiced by Yōko Hikasa in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Jamie Marchi in the English version, the latter of whom also voiced Helen, Elizabeth Thompson, and Cana Alberona.
Appearance[]
Rias is a young woman with light skin, blue eyes, and a buxom figure. Her long, crimson thigh-length red hair is her most distinguishing, with an ahoge sticking out on the top and loose bangs over her forehead along with side bangs framing the edges of her face.
Rias' most commonly worn outfit is the Kuoh Academy girls' uniform; a white long-sleeved, button-down shirt (short sleeves for spring/summer) with a black ribbon on her shirt collar under a black shoulder cape and a matching button-down corset, a bright pink skirt with white accents, brown dress shoes, and white crew-length socks. She is also often seen wearing seductive lingerie and thongs, especially when she has a desire to sleep with Issei.
When deep in thought, Rias wears a pair of glasses that she claims make her mind work better.

Rias is a kind-hearted young woman, treating all of her own servants as family. She believes Issei is a special person, always getting overcome with jealousy whenever she sees other girls around him. Times like these showcase her fiery side, where she suddenly exhibits a wild temperament as she gets angry and violent whenever someone insults her family or peerage. Rias also dislikes cruelty towards people.
As much pride as she takes in her family's name, she dislikes being seen as Rias of the Gremory Family. The reason she even decided to live in the human world is because there, everyone sees her as Rias and not a Devil or as the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess. She believes that if someone marries her because of her status, they might as well be marrying her house rather than Rias herself. It's because of this that she makes it clear she has no desire to become Riser's wife, as she despises him, even though said marriage is meant to secure the future for devils.
She takes great amusement out of teasing Issei and Asia, but still makes sure no one forgets that Issei is hers and nobody else's, and she does not wish to share him. She has no problem with showing Issei her breasts or even sleeping with him while naked (which she even downright states she always does, claiming that she can't sleep otherwise).
After becoming Issei's girlfriend, Rias becomes more confident in her relationship and no longer becomes jealous or angry when seeing Issei with other girls, even becoming content with Issei's dream of forming a harem and willingly letting the other girls date him. However, Rias still shows some signs of jealousy, but much less than before, such as when she feels Issei doesn't spend enough time with her, but she never stops believing in and loving him. Similar to Akeno, Rias is dependent towards Issei (though to a lesser extent than the former) as Rias will lose her will to fight and lead when he isn't around.
History[]
Rias is the daughter and second child of the Gremory Family who became the heir after her brother, Sirzechs, became the Satan Lucifer, thus losing his right as heir to the house. After her becoming the heiress of the Gremory Clan was announced, Rias became forcefully engaged with Riser Phenex. Prior to the series, Rias was responsible for reincarnating Akeno Himejima, Yuuto Kiba, Koneko Toujou, and Gasper Vladi as members of her peerage. She enrolled at Kuoh Academy two years before the series along with Akeno, Sona, and Tsubaki and revived the abolished Occult Research Club upon arriving, which she used as a base for her servants and assumed the position of it's president.
Powers & Abilities[]
Rias inherited the Bael Clan's Power of Destruction from her mother, a power that allows her to release energies that can disintegrate any form of matter whether it's inanimate or otherwise. However, it can be countered by opponents who wield sufficiently greater power. Volume 14, after her training with Akeno, it is revealed that Rias perfected a special one-hit kill move which is described as a compression of unimaginable amounts of demonic power. It has the appearance of an enormous sphere with a mixture of crimson and black aura radiating from inside of it. Rias claims that she created it by solely concentrating on destruction and strengthening it, after having experienced the constant assaults from the terrorists and the death of her beloved. The extent of its power is unknown but it is stated to be extremely dangerous, with its power surpassing the retiring system in the Rating Game.Rias has all the common skills and powers of a Devil. She is also shown to be at least somewhat proficient in the use of spells, such as the ritual to drain energy from Issei's left hand to let it appear human again, healing, teleportation by magic circle, and others. As a sister of Satan, the light novel hinted that her power is high compared to other Devils at her age. In Volume 1, she and Akeno are able to defeat three Fallen Angels with relative ease. In Volume 3, with a 8-time boost from Issei, she is able to force Kokabiel on the defensive. Although it is blocked, Kokabiel is not completely unharmed either. In Volume 6, Azazel shows a graph of abilities for the young Devils that is based on the four categories of Power, Technique, Support, and Wizard, along with an additional category, King. It is shown that Rias excels more in the Wizard and Power categories while averaging in both Technique and Support. Her quality as King is shown to be fairly high. Rias has gained the ability to project a red light from her breasts, which recharges Issei's energy. Each use of this power causes her breasts to temporarily shrink in size, which makes Issei cry even though it's sometimes necessary. Her breast size will restore itself after a few days of rest.
Trivia[]
- When she partakes in a mission, she often ends up solving it diplomatically. But when the going gets tough, she'll willingly go toe-to-toe with her enemies, with Katerea's invasion of Kuoh Academy being a good example.
- Rias' counterpart, Mio Naruse, is of the testament of sister new devil.
- Rias has numerous notable similarities with Yue from Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest:
- They are the first and main love interests of the main protagonists after they are no longer as humans (only Rias revived Issei as a devil)
- They immensely lustful for said main protagonist when they've bathed and sleep while naked.
- They've despised other men who tried to hit on them but hated the one who is the worse (Rias hates Riser Phenex and Yue hates Kouki Amanogawa).
- They have destructive powers from their births.
- They are princesses from royal families (Yue was a princess later queen before she was betrayed).
- They've were captured but were rescued by the main protagonists. (Rias taken by Riser for her engage wedding but only for Issei fought and defeated Riser as well taken back Rias and ruined the engagement for good, Yue was mistakenly took by her uncle (revealed to be Alv who controlled her uncle's body) and captured by Eri for Ehit to temporarily possessed her body against Hajime only for Yue freed herself from his influence allowing Hajime to kill Ehit and destroy his "chessboard of life" for all eternity).
