History[]

Mortal Kombat 3[]

Nightwolf

Nightwolf in MK3

Nightwolf received a vision from Raiden that warned him of Shao Kahn's coming invasion and merging of Outworld and Earthrealm. As such he was fully prepared for it, as well as the attacks by the extermination squads. Using his shaman powers, Nightwolf created protection for his homeland and was soon joined by the other chosen warriors. They set out to battle Shao Kahn and his minions and defeated him, saving Earthrealm.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

In the events that led to Onaga's return, Nightwolf received visions of the Dragon King and his resurrection, which he realized was a warning. The shaman continued to receive the visions in his dreams and knew that a new threat was about to arrive. After seeing a vision of Reptile's transformation into Onaga, Nightwolf knew his predictions had come true.

To defeat the Dragon King, the shaman decided to use an ancient ritual that his forefathers had passed down. This was known as the "Sin Eater", which required Nightwolf to take on the sins of his tribe, but at a terrible consequence. If the shaman did this, he would be a danger to all, even his allies so he decided that he had to do it on his own, so as not to endanger his comrades. Nightwolf's role as Sin Eater would bring him to the Netherrealm, where he would draw Onaga's soul to him and release the sins of his ancestors, which would bind the Dragon King's soul to the spot.

After Shujinko brought down Onaga, Nightwolf put his plan into action and succeeded, separating Reptile from Onaga, who he bound to the Netherrealm. Ironically, Shujinko, who had once studied with the shaman, helped Nightwolf to defeat the Dragon King.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]

With the shaman's quest complete, a pack of wolves, his spirit guides, guided him back to Earthrealm. However, Nightwolf began to receive more visions of a battle where an unknown force forced the warriors involved to battle each other. As his visions started to become a reality, Nightwolf spoke with Johnny Cage and their allies, agreeing to help them in battle with Shinnok and his forces. The shaman later met with Kitana who was with the spirit of Liu Kang, thanks to the bond between them, which kept his spirit whole until they could find a way of restoring him to his body. Though still drained from his battle with Onaga, Nightwolf used what magic he had left to become Liu Kang's spiritual anchor himself.

In his ending, Nightwolf defeated Blaze, gaining his power and catapulting him into the spirit world. There he became the ultimate shaman, a living ghost. With his new abilities, the shaman found Liu Kang's spirit and guided it back to the physical world, allowing his friend to reunite with his body, thus becoming human again.

Powers and Abilities[]

End nightwolf2

Nightwolf binding Onaga

Nightwolf is completely in tune with everything spiritual, being a shaman and can create a bow and arrow made of spirit energy to use as a projectile attack against his foes. He also wields a pair of tomahawks that he can charge with etheral green flame and is able to summon a bolt of lightning from the sky, charge forward and knock his opponent back, and purify anyone of their sins. Nightwolf also has a close bond (and a fitting one considering his name) with wolves and is able to speak to them.

Powers[]

  • Divine Empowerment: The name "Nightwolf" is revealed to be a ceremonial title passed down from individual to individual of the Matoka Tribe by their Great Spirit. Through this moniker bestowal, Grey Cloud has access to a host of supernatural powers reminiscent to those in prior MK games but with wider pronunciation in their application. Each spirit he can call for can increase his powers in any way.
    • Superhuman Strength: Grey Cloud has been granted with impressive strength to take on super-powered characters and possibly deities. Kiba the wolf can further increase the strength of his attacks and maybe his lifting strength.
    • Superhuman Speed: He possesses incredible speed to avoid attacks and counter opponents very quickly. He can avoid bullets from Erron Black and can quickly react to them.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Nightwolf can fight for a surprising amount of time without feeling any exhaustion.
    • Superhuman Durability: Cloud does have high resistance to damage and even powerful attacks. He managed to resist powerful attacks from an empowered Sindel and had still been able to fight her.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Grey can also resist extreme levels of physical pain unlike peak human characters. Komo the bear can further increase his durability and endurance to help him.
    • Superhuman Senses: His senses are beyond incredible that he is able to sense corruption from the Netherrealm within Shujinko and can easily sense his Revenant counterpart sneaking around.
    • Magic: Nightwolf has been gifted with magical powers. His most common abilities include green magic manipulation and lightning manipulation. By using his power over green energy, Nightwolf can energize himself or his equipped weapons for maximum damage and summon lethal weapons in the form of tomahawks, daggers and bows. This power can be used defensively in the form of a massive bubble shield that covers his entire front (as seen in MK 2011) or a green aura that redirects projectile attacks once they come into contact with it. His power over lightning is much more basic than his green energy, as he only uses it to summon powerful cloud-to-ground lightning that augments his weapons and scorches his foes. A lesser-known ability of Nightwolf includes the ability to disintegrate his opponent in a beam of light. This was further expanded in later titles as a last resort, self-destructive spell that requires an incantation that unleashes devastating light capable of harming even Elder Gods such as Cetrion. Nightwolf is also shown to infuse his shaman magic into his weapons, causing them to turn blue. This magic causes his weapons to electrocute and call down lightning on afflicted targets. It also has the ability to generate blue colored flames.
      • Energy Manipulation
      • Light Manipulation
      • Weather Manipulation
      • Electrokinesis
      • Pyrokinesis
      • Weapon Creation
    • Spiritual Bestowal: New skills shown in MK11 are his heightened spiritual connection which enables him to imbibe on the power of his spirit animals to increase his own physical abilities or give status ailments to his enemies. The ferocity of Kiba the Wolf augments his physical might strengthening overall attack power, Komo the Bear's ursine strength bolsters his defensive ability to lessen damage taken in battle and the majestic spirit of Hana the Eagle is another ranged attack with which Nightwolf both uses to disorient adversaries or keep her stationary to further augment himself.
    • Longevity: Based on an intro in MK11, Nightwolf mentioned that he will live until the Great Spirit chooses another one to hold the mantle. This is mentioning that he can live longer than normal humans.

Abilities[]

  • Master Martial Artist: Nightwolf has proven to be one of the most skilled martial artists in all the realms. He has mentored Shujinko and taught him his fighting style. He has been able to defeat a number of opponents. He has defeated Quan Chi, Cyrax and Sektor as cyborgs, Sindel, Kollector, Frost as a cybernetic, Geras, and his Revenant counterpart.
    • Val Tudo
    • Tae Kwan Do
    • Okchitaw
  • Master Acrobat: Nightwolf has shown to be a very proficient acrobat.
  • Weapon Mastery: Nightwolf has impressive skills in archery, axe wielding, and other weapons he can create.
    • Master Archer
    • Swordsmanship
    • Throwing
  • Enhanced Intelligence: Nightwolf has shown to be extremely intelligent in formulating strategies and has great leadership.
    • Tactical Analysis
    • Leadership
  • Indomitable Will: Grey Cloud has been chosen as Nightwolf due to his unbreakable spirit and kind heart. He was willing to sacrifice himself in order to kill Sindel so she doesn't kill the remaining Earthrealm warriors. Raiden chose him to be in charge while he was away due to his spirit and determination.
