Last night, when I was down on my knees, about to lose my wife, like I was about to lose everything, and I finally understood what you must felt. Look, I am. I know that I probably owe you more than this, but. I am so sorry.
~ Negan's apology to Maggie for killing Glenn all those years ago.

Negan Smith is one of the main antagonists of AMC's The Walking Dead universe.

He is the charismatic and ruthless leader of a group called the Saviors, who control numerous communities through intimidation and violence in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies (referred to as walkers).

However, after his defeat by Rick Grimes and subsequent imprisonment, he realized the error of his ways and sought redemption for his crimes, becoming an anti-hero in the last few seasons of the series and the main protagonist of his own spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City.

He is portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who also played John Winchester in Supernatural, Comedian/Edward Blake in the film adaptation of Watchmen, and Thomas Wayne in Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Personality[]

Negan is depicted as a charismatic but brutal leader, ruling the Saviors through fear and manipulation. He maintains complete control over his followers, acting as a dictator and fostering a cult-like devotion among them. Despite his ruthlessness, he genuinely cares about the survival of his group and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect them. He employs extreme measures to ensure obedience, including torture and murder, using fear to keep people in line. However, he also respects strength and bravery, forming bonds with those who defy him.

Despite his harsh exterior, Negan shows moments of compassion, sparing innocent lives and expressing disgust towards sexual violence - albeit, the latter standard hints at his hypocrisy, since he has multiple "wives," many of whom were clearly coerced into the role out of desperation for better living standards; so, he isn't committing aggressive sexual assault, but the coercion means it is still sexual assault. Negan's complex character evolves over time, as he grapples with his past actions and seeks redemption. He forms genuine connections with individuals like Carl and Judith, showing a softer side beneath his tough exterior. Despite his initial antagonism towards Rick and his group, Negan develops respect for their leadership and abilities.

Not simply his brutality, but his charisma kept his men in line. In his custody, Rick's son, Carl, developed an admiration of Negan's ability to organise a community, however, disagreed with his methods. Negan bonds with Carl, entertaining the boy's suggestions for a more peaceful resolution to the conflict, although Negan remained too obstinate to change. After learning that Carl was bit and mercy killed, Negan felt a genuine remorse, as he had connected with him and felt an admiration for the deceased's compassionate ambitions. Despite this, he still launched one final attack against Rick's group; when Rick defeats him and cuts his throat, Negan stresses Rick's savagery by asking him what he had done and noting that Carl didn't know his father's violent nature.

Imprisoned after his defeat, Negan experiences a gradual change, finding solace in memories of his late wife, Lucille. He undergoes a transformation during his time in captivity, displaying a more empathetic and cooperative demeanor. However, he still struggles with guilt and remorse for his past atrocities. After being freed and integrating back into society, Negan seeks redemption by helping others and forming new relationships. He faces challenges from his past, including confrontations with those seeking vengeance. Despite his efforts to change, Negan grapples with his darker impulses and the consequences of his actions; much like he days leading the Saviors, he takes actions that are of dubious morality, albeit with an honest attempt to support others. Throughout his journey, Negan learns the value of compassion and selflessness, striving to atone for his past sins. Despite his flaws, he demonstrates resilience and a desire for personal growth, ultimately seeking redemption for his past deeds.

Biography[]

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Negan had a troubled childhood where he was often neglected by his mother. One of his pastimes involved being home stray dogs he would find out on the street and giving them, food, water, and shelter. However, his mother disapproved of this. One day, one of the stray dogs he brought home ate all of the puppies of the other strays and attack his mom, biting off her ear and leaving her permanently scarred.

In high school, he developed into a bully, relishing in power games and profanity. Despite his troubled past, he became a high school gym teacher, dedicated to helping students overcome their weaknesses. He met Lucille, whom he married, and they shared a love for music and desired to start a family.

However, Negan's life took a downturn when he lost his job due to a violent altercation at a bar. Depressed and directionless, he began an affair with Lucille's best friend, Janine, leading to financial strain and further turmoil. Things escalated when Lucille was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, revealing Negan's infidelity. Despite this, Negan ended the affair and committed to supporting Lucille through her treatment.

Their struggles coincided with the outbreak of a deadly virus, adding further challenges to their already difficult situation.

Caring For Lucile/Forming The Saviors[]

In the fall of 2010, the Wildfire Outbreak became global, forcing Negan and Lucille into shelter in their basement with a generator. Negan scavenged for chemotherapy and learned to administer it to Lucille. They encountered marauding doctors who occasionally supplied them with chemo. Seven months in, a walker threatened them, leading Negan to turn off the generator, sacrificing their movie night. Lucille revealed her cancer diagnosis and urged Negan to find more chemo. He ventured out, encountering Franklin and Laura, who helped him. Later, Negan was captured by a gang but revealed the doctors' location to save Lucille.

Returning home, Negan found Lucille had died by suicide. Overcome with grief, he set their house on fire and sought revenge on the gang. He formed a group called "the Saviors," with him as the leader. Under his rule, the Saviors grew in size and established outposts, terrorizing other communities. Negan encountered the Hilltop Colony and the Kingdom, demanding resources in exchange for protection. Despite his brutal methods, Negan kept his group safe and thriving.

Meeting Rick Grimes[]

Around 20 months into the apocalypse, a supply exchange took place between the Hilltop and the Saviors. When the Saviors felt dissatisfied with the supplies received from a group led by Ethan, Andy, Crystal, Craig, Tim, and Marsha, they executed Tim and Marsha and imprisoned Craig. The Saviors demanded the survivors return to the Hilltop and kill Gregory to secure Craig's release. However, this plan failed, leading to an attack by Rick Grimes and his group on the Saviors. In retaliation, Negan sent Dwight and later Jiro to subjugate Rick's group, but both attempts failed. Enraged by the loss of his people, Negan decided to take matters into his own hands.

After capturing some of Rick Grimes' group on their way to the Hilltop Colony, Negan emerges as the true leader of the Saviors. He confronts Rick's group, explaining that they owe his men supplies and that he intends to make them work for him. Seeking retribution for the deaths of many Saviors, Negan warns that he will brutally beat one member of the group. Unable to decide who to kill, he selects a victim randomly using a nursery rhyme. Despite protests from the group, Negan mercilessly beats Abraham Ford with his barbed wire-wrapped bat, inflicting severe injuries.

After brutally murdering two members of Rick Grimes' group, Negan asserts his dominance and control over them. He confronts Rick, demanding obedience and compliance with his rules. Negan threatens Rick and his group, warning them of the consequences of defiance. He psychologically torments Rick by forcing him to retrieve an axe and nearly subjecting his son Carl to mutilation. Through manipulation and intimidation, Negan asserts his authority over Rick and the survivors, leaving them broken and subservient to his will. Negan takes Daryl as a prisoner, leaving the survivors to contemplate their fate under his ruthless regime.

Negan makes multiple appearances throughout the seventh season, asserting his dominance over various communities and individuals. He interacts with Dwight, offering him rewards and tasks, and later confronts Daryl, presenting him with options after his failed escape attempt. Negan visits Alexandria, imposing his will and forcing Rick to comply with his demands. He displays his ruthlessness by brutally punishing those who cross him, including burning Dr. Carson alive. Negan's manipulation tactics are evident as he tries to recruit Eugene and Sasha to his cause. Despite facing challenges, including an attempted assassination and a failed attack on Alexandria, Negan remains determined to maintain his power and wage war against those who oppose him.

All Out War[]

Negan, accompanied by several lieutenants including Dwight, Regina, Eugene, Simon, and Gavin, confronts Rick and his army outside the Sanctuary. Negan refuses to surrender, prompting Rick to open fire. Negan gets shot in the leg but manages to take cover. Later, he finds shelter with Gabriel, where they engage in a conversation about their beliefs and past actions.

In a flashback, Negan attends a meeting with other Saviors, discussing their plans to deal with the rebellion at Alexandria. He asserts his authority and outlines his strategy to maintain control. Negan and Eugene devise a plan to deal with a herd of walkers threatening the Sanctuary. Negan also deals with internal strife among his lieutenants, particularly with Simon, whom he eventually kills in a brutal confrontation. As the conflict between Negan and Rick intensifies, Negan faces betrayal from Dwight but manages to outmaneuver him and the other traitors.

However, Rick ultimately defeats Negan in a final showdown, leaving him gravely wounded. Despite Maggie's desire for revenge, Rick decides to spare Negan's life and orders Siddiq to save him. Negan is then imprisoned, with Rick intending to use him as a symbol of change and a reminder of their commitment to rebuilding civilization.

Imprisonment at Alexandria[]

In Alexandria, Rick converses with a locked-up Negan, emphasizing the changes since the war and the communities' collaborative efforts. Negan predicts an end to the peace and challenges Rick's role in saving the world. Michonne confronts Negan in his cell, triggering emotional exchanges about their pasts and the state of the world. Despite initial hostility, Michonne eventually connects with Negan, persuading him to eat and sharing personal anecdotes. Maggie confronts Negan, rekindling past trauma but ultimately spares him, recognizing his suffering.

Years later, Judith engages with Negan, fostering an unexpected friendship. Negan's interactions with Gabriel and Michonne reveal his evolving character and desire for redemption. Negan ventures outside Alexandria, facing challenges and reflecting on his past actions. He returns, seeking acceptance and redemption from Michonne and the community. During a storm, Negan risks his life to save Judith, earning gratitude from Michonne and reflecting on the nature of good and evil.

The Whisperer War/Redemption[]

After the blizzard, Negan gains daytime freedom from his cell in Alexandria, assisting with gardening. He chats with Lydia about a found skin, playfully warning her. Later, he advises Gabriel on managing threats, emphasizing strategic omissions. Ordered by Gabriel to help Aaron fight walkers, Negan reluctantly complies, sharing a tense encounter. Negan saves Aaron from walkers, revealing remorse over past actions. Escaping his cell after a confrontation, Negan rescues Lydia from bullies but accidentally kills one. Despite Daryl's distrust, Negan helps Lydia again, leading to his re-imprisonment. Released mysteriously, Negan escapes Alexandria with Brandon.

In the woods, Negan and Brandon bond until Brandon's dark intentions emerge. Negan rescues a woman and her son from walkers, but Brandon kills them. Enraged, Negan kills Brandon. Joining the Whisperers, Negan earns Alpha's trust and uncovers a spy. Negan advises Alpha on strategy and later kills her, fulfilling a pact with Carol. Meanwhile, he earns Daryl's distrust, but ultimately assists in defeating Beta and saving Lydia.

In a hospital, Negan tries reconciling with Lydia before opting out of Daryl's plan due to his notoriety. During the Whisperers' attack, Negan confronts Beta, aiding in his demise. He decides to stay with the survivors, earning Lydia's trust. Finally, Negan encounters Maggie, seeking reconciliation but receiving cold silence. Despite mixed reactions, Negan chooses to stay with the group, helping them move forward.

Fight Against The Reapers[]

Negan reluctantly joins Maggie's group on a mission through D.C. As they navigate the subway tunnels, tensions rise, and Negan abandons Maggie when she's attacked by a walker. Maggie survives and confronts Negan, who admits his mistake. The group faces challenges, including a betrayal and a deadly encounter with walkers. The group faces an attack by Reapers, resulting in casualties. Maggie and Negan clash over their differing approaches to survival. They make a deal to work together against the Reapers. Negan teaches the group tactics, revealing his past with the Whisperers. In "For Blood," they lead a herd toward Meridian, engaging in combat along the way. The situation escalates when Leah targets them with rockets.

Rebellion Against The Commonwealth[]

Elijah and Negan escape from danger and join Maggie to confront Brandon Carver, the Reaper who killed Elijah's sister. Elijah is injured in the ensuing fight but distracts Carver, allowing Negan to subdue him. Daryl intervenes in the group's plan to trade Carver for supplies, leading to a tense standoff. Eventually, Maggie kills Carver, prompting Negan to question her motives and ultimately decide to exile himself. Negan encounters a group at the Commonwealth and aids in rescuing Gabriel and others from a dangerous situation orchestrated by Carlson. He reveals his connection to Annie, a comrade, and helps protect survivors. Negan also confronts Hershel, Glenn's son, who holds him responsible for his father's death. Despite Hershel's anger, Negan offers him a chance for revenge in the future.

As the conflict with the Commonwealth escalates, Maggie reluctantly entrusts Hershel's safety to Negan and Annie, despite Hershel's distrust. After the battle, Negan reaffirms his commitment to Maggie's cause and offers to protect Hershel, even in the face of the boy's animosity towards him. In an abandoned building, Negan, Annie, Daryl, and Maggie hide from troopers led by Lance. They discuss plans for their people at the Commonwealth, ultimately deciding to fight back and negotiate with Lance. Negan disguises himself, eliminates troopers, and infiltrates the Commonwealth. He meets Mercer, seeking help for their people. Negan reunites with Carol and together they locate Sebastian, Pamela's son. They confront Sebastian, but their plan is jeopardized when Sebastian is recognized, leading to a scuffle. Eventually, a deal is struck with Pamela, ensuring the safety of their group. Later, Negan and Annie discover they are expecting a child.

Negan and other captives are transported to Outpost 22, revealed to be a rebranded Alexandria under Commonwealth control. Amid harsh conditions, Negan and Ezekiel plan resistance. Negan is coerced into a risky collaboration with the Warden, leading to a confrontation where the Warden threatens his family. In a dramatic turn, Negan and other prisoners face execution, but Ezekiel's bravery prompts soldiers to defy orders, leading to the Warden's demise and the reclamation of Alexandria.

In the aftermath of reclaiming Alexandria and preparing for a mission to rescue missing children from the Commonwealth, various characters confront their pasts and make difficult decisions. Rosita, Gabriel, and others plan their operation, while Negan offers to help Maggie take out Pamela Milton. However, Maggie refuses and sets out to carry out the mission herself. Amidst a chaotic gunfight, Judith is injured while saving Maggie's life. As the Coalition faces a herd of walkers, they make a daring escape, ultimately leading to a standoff with Pamela and the Commonwealth forces. Daryl convinces Pamela to open the gates, allowing the people to seek refuge, but tension remains high. Mercer devises a plan to eliminate the walker threat, resulting in the destruction of the Estates and the salvation of the Commonwealth. Despite moments of reconciliation, Maggie ultimately cannot forgive Negan for Glenn's death. A year later, Negan returns Judith's compass, symbolizing his acceptance of her decision and his hope for her future.

Settling Down[]

After leaving the Coalition, Negan and Annie settle in a cabin near New Babylon with their son, Joshua. When Annie is attacked during a trading run, Negan seeks revenge, killing her assailants. This act leads to him being hunted by New Babylon's authorities, prompting Negan to send Annie and Joshua away for their safety. Negan remains on the run, taking odd jobs to survive. He later discovers one of his victims had a daughter named Ginny, whom he feels responsible for. Negan finds Ginny living on a farm and takes her under his wing, embarking on a journey together while keeping his past a secret from her.

Helping Maggie Save Hershel[]

Maggie arrives at the Easy Stay Motor Inn seeking help to clear out walkers from her cabin. She gets involved in a confrontation with the bar owner and others, but manages to subdue them. Negan, an old acquaintance, enters the scene and escapes with a girl named Ginny. Maggie and Negan strike a deal to help each other, with Maggie seeking Negan's assistance in rescuing her son, Hershel, who was taken by a dangerous man called the Croat. They journey together, encountering challenges and reflecting on their pasts. Eventually, they reach Manhattan, where they face threats from both walkers and other survivors, including a confrontation with a marshal named Perlie. In the midst of chaos, they encounter Esther, setting up further intrigue and danger.

Maggie and Negan evade walkers and follow Esther, who has stolen their belongings, through dangerous situations. They end up in the hideout of a group called the Manhattan Tribespeople, where tensions arise. Negan and Maggie reveal some truths about their pasts, including Negan's encounter with the Croat, who poses a threat to them. Conflict erupts between the Tribespeople and another group, the Burazi, resulting in casualties. Negan displays his brutal side in dealing with the Burazi, leaving Maggie conflicted. Eventually, they form an uneasy alliance with the Tribespeople, who offer to help them confront the Croat in exchange for risking their lives.

In a series of flashbacks, Negan and Ginny, a young girl, navigate the post-apocalyptic world together. Negan struggles with teaching Ginny survival skills while coping with his own past traumas. In the present, Maggie, Negan, and a group of survivors plan to confront the Croat, a dangerous figure controlling the area. Tensions rise within the group, and Negan's past actions come to light, leading to a confrontation with Luther, resulting in Luther's accidental death. Meanwhile, Maggie grapples with her grief and struggles to let go of her past by burning a cherished item.

Negan's unease about facing the Croat intensifies as the group's plans unravel. Luther's disappearance adds tension, and Maggie confronts Negan about his role in Luther's fate. As they prepare to confront the Croat, Negan's memories of the Sanctuary clash with the present danger. Meanwhile, the tribe faces a devastating trap set by the Croat, leading to a harrowing fight for survival in the arena. Amidst the chaos, Negan saves the life of the marshal pursuing him, defying the Croat's expectations. As Negan and the marshal escape, tensions rise between them, setting the stage for a tense standoff.

Maggie grapples with the traumatic memory of Negan's killing of Glenn. Additionally, it's revealed that Maggie had deceived Negan about the Croat's actions, including the theft of the Bricks' grain, and that the Croat had demanded Negan in exchange for Hershel's release, providing Maggie with Negan's Wanted poster. As Negan and Perlie navigate the city, Perlie holds Negan at gunpoint with his modified Nail Gun. Seeking shelter in an abandoned souvenir store, Negan warns Perlie of the Croat's blockade on the island and recounts saving Perlie's life. Perlie, however, remains resentful of Negan's past actions, including the deaths of the magistrate and others. The conversation reveals Negan's past as a gym teacher and Perlie's history with his deceased brother.

Facing a herd of walkers, Negan and Perlie maneuver through the city, encountering eerie sights and confronting personal memories. Eventually, they find temporary refuge in a building, where Perlie shares the story of his brother's tragic demise. Despite their differences, Negan decides to assist Perlie, fearing the consequences of leaving him behind. As they settle in for the night, Perlie opens up to Negan about his brother Joel's troubled life and tragic end. Their conversation delves into themes of abandonment, guilt, and the complexities of morality in a post-apocalyptic world. Meanwhile, Ginny's distress signal draws the attention of both Negan and Maggie, signaling a potential convergence of their paths.

After spotting Ginny's flare, Negan and Perlie search for Maggie, believing she fired it. Ginny surprises Negan with a whistle he taught her. Maggie arrives, explaining Ginny's sudden appearance. A herd approaches, and Negan insists Ginny can't stay. Perlie offers to take her, while Negan stays to help Maggie rescue Hershel. Ginny refuses to leave Negan, who reveals to her he killed her father and views her as a debt. Heartbroken, Ginny leaves with Perlie. Later, Negan and Maggie stake out Madison Square Garden, planning to rescue Hershel. Negan expresses suspicions about their plan's ease. Maggie admits Ginny tried to tell him something, but Negan realizes it's a trap. A fight ensues, leading to Negan confessing to killing Ginny's father. They're captured by the Croat, who reveals Maggie's involvement in luring Negan.

At the bank, they exchange Negan for Hershel. In Maggie's truck, Hershel rebuffs Maggie's attempts to discuss his kidnapping, feeling safer in Manhattan. Maggie realizes her obsession with Negan has affected her relationship with Hershel. At night, the Croat recounts his history with Negan, aiming to recruit him for a leadership role. At the theater, the Dama offers Negan leadership, citing his potential to unite settlements. She presents evidence of her influence over Hershel, threatening him. Negan realizes the danger she poses to Hershel and reluctantly accepts her offer, leaving Maggie and him troubled by the depth of the threat.

Trivia[]

  • Negan is the second major primary antagonist in the Comic Series, the first being The Governor and the third being Alpha.
    • Out of all three of the antagonists, Negan has the longest lifespan and is the only one still alive.
    • Also, while still a bad guy, Negan is the least evil of the three, because unlike The Governor, Negan does not really like killing people, he only kills to keep people in line, and he absolutely hates sexual violence (The Governor was a vicious rapist who raped Michonne multiple times). Plus, unlike Alpha who is a feral individual, Negan wants to rebuild civilisation, and unlike Alpha, Negan does not kill children or pregnant women. And unlike Alpha, Negan hates rape and does not allow anyone in his group to rape anyone (Alpha allowed many of her male Whisperers to rape her own daughter, Lydia and other female Whisperers, numerous times because she believed that it would make them "stronger").
    • Also, each of the three major antagonists has a different status: Negan is alive, The Governor is dead, and Alpha is undead.
  • Charlie Adlard has confirmed that Negan is based on actor Henry Rollins.
    • Henry Rollins also auditioned for the role of Negan due to partially inspiring the character, but the role was eventually given to Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
  • Negan in both the Comic Series and TV Series are different in some ways. In the Comic Series, Negan is a very tall and physically imposing man with a shaven face, square jaw, and his leather jacket's zipper is on his left side, whereas in the TV series, while still very tall, he is thinner, has a stubble, his jaw is more round, and his leather jacket's zipper is on his right side, which is more appropriate since men's leather jackets have the zipper on the right side, while women's leather jackets have the zipper on the left side. In addition, TV Series Negan is more sadistic, disrespectful and depraved than his Comic counterpart, shown when he kills two people in Rick's group, Abraham and Glenn, instead of just one, Glenn, like in the comics, and even wanted Rick to chop off Carl's left arm or else everyone in Rick's group would be executed by Negan's men (though Negan soon reveals that it was a test and he just wanted to scare Rick into complete submission, which indeed worked), something that his Comic counterpart never did. TV Series Negan also spends far more time mocking and torturing his victims and admits that he enjoys killing people (especially men, whilst he admits that he does not enjoy killing women), while his Comic counterpart confesses to Rick in private that he does not enjoy killing people, men or women.
    • Also, it is strongly implied that in the TV Series, during his debut, Negan purposely, not randomly, selected Abraham because of the man's imposing size and fearless demeanour, and Negan felt somewhat intimidated by him and felt that it was too dangerous to keep the larger man alive. Negan also probably believed that removing Abraham from Rick's group would leave the group at a certain practical disadvantage. Therefore, Negan was most likely just messing with Rick and his group with the "eenie, meeny, miney, moe" game and had already chosen to kill Abraham even before the game. Even Abraham's actor, Michael Cudlitz, agrees that Negan's game was simply a front for him to observe each member of the group and determine who was the logical choice to take out. That got confirmed at the Season 8 Finale, Negan in his final fight with Rick, revealed to him that the "eenie, meeny, miney, moe" wasn't random, the reason behind was he wanted to avoid killing Rick so Carl wouldn't have to live with that fact. His seemingly random choice of Glenn as his second victim supports this interpretation as well, given that Glenn had previously interrupted him. In the Comic Series, however, Negan's victim, Glenn, truly appears to have been a random selection since he gave several reasons as to why he couldn't decide as to who was going to get "Lucilled".
  • Negan is the fourth major primary antagonist in the TV Series, the first being Shane Walsh, the second being The Governor, and the third being Gareth.
  • In the comics, Negan's right-hand man is Dwight but the Savior that appeared in Issue 97 and 100 come close as well. In the TV Series, Negan's right hand man is Simon and they share a very strong relationship. Simon is the second in command of the Saviors. The differences is that while Dwight wants to overthrow Negan, Simon does not and is extremely loyal to Negan.
  • From Issue 100 to Issue 111; Negan had a red scarf around his neck in the comics. However after Issue 111, Negan has not been shown wearing that since. In the TV Series; Negan's scarf is much larger and he has been seen wearing it from time to time thus far. Its a possibility that he wears the scarf when he intends to kill his enemies and when he is not wearing it, it was because he was not planning on killing anyone with the exception of his own men who disobeys his rules or orders.
  • Negan appear as a guest character in the fighting game, Tekken 7.
  • Negan is the first and only major antagonist in The Walking Dead to later become an anti-hero and change from his antagonistic ways.
