I'm not 7 years old anymore, Aunt Trunchbull!
~ Jenny finally standing up against her step-aunt, and also her most famous quote.

Miss Jennifer "Jenny" Honey is the deuteragonist of the 1988 Roald Dahl novel Matilda, and its movie adaptations. She is Matilda Wormwood's school teacher and later, legal guardian, and adoptive mother.

Unlike the school principal, Agatha Trunchbull (who is her step-aunt), she is a selfless, innocent, and nice woman. She has a dark secret, but she doesn't intend to let it interfere with her teaching, although she accidentally does so in the climax.

Portrayals[]

  • In the 1996 film adaptation, she is portrayed by Embeth Davitz, who also portrayed Helen Hirsch from Schindler's List. She was also portrayed by Amanda and Kristen Summers as a toddler, and by Phoebe Pearl as a child.
  • In the musical adaptation, she is portrayed by Lauren Ward.
  • In the film adaptation of the musical, she is portrayed by Lashana Lynch.

Biography[]

Prior to the events of the story, according to a flashback, her mother died when she was 2, and her father, a doctor, died when she was 5.

Since her father's death, Jen was abused by her aunt, and the latter took away what she had and made sure she couldn't even sneak a chocolate. Throughout the movie, Jen may be innocent but she's not afraid to speak her mind, like when she tells off Harry and Zinnia, and especially when stands up to Agatha and helps Matilda and her class run her wicked aunt off for good at the end of the film.

Trivia[]

  • Mariska Hargitay, Helen Hunt, Tori Amos, Winona Ryder, Rosie O'Donnell, Rene Russo, Meg Ryan, Nicole Kidman, and Samantha Mathis were all considered for the role of Jennifer Honey before Embeth Davitz was cast.
