I'll kill you.
~ Heero's signature death threat

Heero Yuy is the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Heero is on the five Gundam Pilots, alongside Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Chang Wufei and Quatre Raberba Winner.

He is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa (who also voiced Mitsuhide Akechi, Benimaru Nikaido, Tenshinhan, and Android 16.) in Japanese and by Mark Hildreth in English.

Abilities[]

Being trained as a soldier at a early age, Heero is shown to excellent Mobile Suit pilot, being able to pilot any at his disposal. The Wing Gundam Zero, which is his main Gundam, is able to pilot it easily, even more sore than any other Mobile Suit, due to the ZERO SYSTEM, which enhances His consciousness and focus. He is also a very skilled fighter and computer hacker.

Personality[]

Heero is shown to be a serious, stoic and near emotionless individual, even towards his comrades and Relina, the woman who loves him. During a mission or in battle, Heero will not hesitate to kill his opponents and will be focus on the said mission until it's complete. Despite this, he will sometimes spare his opponents if be believes that they aren't that much of a threat or if he has no interest in fighting. Heero most of the time prefers to do things alone, unless it's a team effort, where he'll have to count on the his fellow Gundam pilots to help him out. Despite his overall view on things, Heero is a kind-hearted young man who desires peace, as he will sometimes give philosophical speeches about war-related activities would result in heartbreak.

Background[]

Pilot of the Wing Gundam and Wing Zero. Heero is known as "The Perfect Soldier," having been trained since he was very young for the battlefield. Heero Yuy is nothing more than his code name, however, named for the fallen Colony leader who's assassination the Gundam Pilots were supposed to avenge.

History[]

Operation Meteor[]

He would first move out in his Wing Gundam in it's bird form. While approaching the atmosphere, he encounters a civilian shuttle, but considers shooting it down, not knowing that Vice Foreign Minister Darlian, the Earth/Colony peace advocate, is in it. He then gets interrupted when OZ Colonel Zechs Merquise in his shuttle spots Heero, and the two have a brief scuffle in the atmosphere until Heero takes a hit, prompting him to transform his machine into its mobile suit mode. Two OZ soldiers fire at Heero, only for the latter to blow them away with one shot from his machine's Buster Rifle. Zechs, who actually fought Heero in a Leo, a ground unit, engages Heero and outsmarts the latter. Zechs grasps the Leo onto the Wing Gundam and exits the cockpit, leaving the weight of the grunt unit to drag the Wing Gundam down into the ocean.

After his arrival on Earth, Heero encounters Relena Darlian, the daughter of Mr. Darlian. He wakes up from being unconscious and acts a little hostile towards her, by attempting to self-destruct himself, only to fail because of the seawater damaging his spacesuit's system. When some Alliance paramedics arrive because of Relena mistaking Heero for an Alliance soldier, he physically attacks them and hijacks the ambulance to proceed to the mission, surprising Relena.

Heero sneaks into a copy room and uses the computer to enroll himself into her school and hacks into the Alliance database for torpedoes to destroy his machine. When Relena tries to start a conversation with him, he just ignores her. After class, Relena gives him an invitation to her birthday party, but surprisingly, he rips her invitation card and threatens to kill her.

Heero arrives at an Alliance base where the torpedoes were, causing chaos there while searching for the weapons. Eventually, Relena arrives and tries to reason with him. He gives her his attention, but then pulls a gun on her. A gunshot from out of nowhere hits Heero in the arm. The other boy, Duo Maxwell, reveals himself and assumes the moral high ground stating that he was saving Relena from Heero. However, she checks to see him Heero is okay, confusing Duo. After firing a second shot at Heero for trying to reach for his gun, Relena defends Heero, and Duo is further confused, wondering how he ended up looking like the wrong one. The Wing Gundam, along with Duo's Deathscythe Gundam, surface from the ocean. While Relena was blinded by Duo shining a bright light to conceal what was deemed classified, Heero then lunges to the torpedoes evading Duo's attempted shots, fires the torpedoes at his machine, and lets himself fall into the water face down.

His primary rival is Zechs, and they have several battles throughout the series, even trading Gundams from time to time. His other rival is Treize Kushrenada, who gives him the purely evil Gundam Epyon, which he trades to Zechs for the Wing Zero.

Although Trowa Barton holds the most mystery to his personality, Heero comes a close second, always disappearing after completing a mission or having an encounter. He lives by his emotions as stated by himself several times within the series and always thinks things through most of the time. He was also referred to as "the heart of space" by Quatre Raberba Winner, Pilot 04, near the end of the last episode "In Frozen Teardrop".

Eve Wars[]

By the time of Christmas Eve, A.C. 195, things have changed a lot for Heero and the other Gundam pilots. After Relena surrendered the Sanc Kingdom and become Romefeller's puppet monarch, only for her pacifist ideologies to sway many of the Romefeller delegates to her side, making her Queen in title and power at the cost of Duke Dermail's, who wanted to continue militarization of the Earth Sphere and maintain an iron fist over it, Heero, unsure of Relena's peace being legit, travels to Romefeller HQ to assassinate her, but relents after seeing the positive feedback from Romefeller following her speech, and spares her. When her own brother Millardo, who Heero knows as Zechs, declares war on the Earth Sphere as the new leader of the White Fang colony revolutionists, Heero heads back into space to face him.

At the climax of the Eve Wars, as Heero prepares to head into what would be his final battle, he and Relena have a tender moment together before his departure. While Relena and others like Howard, Sally Po, and Lady Une watch things from MO-II, having Noin broadcast the war to the Earth and Colonies, who both agree to peace, with the Colonies denouncing the White Fang and no longer considering them a part of them, while Heero manages to defeat Zechs, but spares his life, for Relena's sake. In the meantime, although Doctor J and the other Gundam Scientists sacrifice themselves to kill Quinze and activate the engines on Peacemillion, forcing it and Libra away from Earth, one section of Libra breaks away and falls back towards Earth. Heero heads to the power core to destroy it, but with the Wing Zero's Vulcan cannons out of ammo and its beam saber out of energy, Heero prepares to commit suicide with the Wing Zero's self-detonation device to destroy the core, but is stopped by Zechs and Epyon, who sacrifice themselves instead to destroy the core, but not before Zechs vows to Heero that they will meet again before vanishing in the resulting explosion.

Nevertheless, Wing Zero is still damaged, and the block continues its decent. However, Heero asks Wing Zero for aid, and the ZERO System complies, before Wufei shows up in the Altron to give Wing Zero its Twin Buster Rifle back. With Wing Zero packing its Twin Buster Rifle again, the other Gundam Pilots and the Maguanac Corps pull out and leave Heero to finish the job. Flying ahead of the block, Heero struggles to steady his aim for a clear shot, and declaring he will survive this, he attains target lock and fires, landing a direct hit that sets off secondary explosions and obliterates the block, saving the Earth. He soon emerges from the glare with the Wing Zero in its flight conversion, battle-scarred, but intact.

Duo: You've done it, Heero!
Wufei: Yeah! Naturally!
Trowa: Huh, he is quite the guy.
Quatre: Now I get it...It's Heero who is the heart of outer space.
Heero: ...Mission...Complete.
~ The end of the Eve Wars

With the formation of the new Earth Sphere Unified Nation, peace has finally come between Earth and the Colonies. At least for now.

On one colony, Relena, now going by her Darlian surname again as the new Vice Foreign Minister, boards her shuttle back to Earth, only to find a teddy bear and birthday card in her seat. Spotting Heero in disguise as a maintenance worker who just left the shuttle and calling out to him to get his attention, Relena tears up the card, similar to how Heero tore up her invite at the beginning of the series, and tells him to hand it to her in person next time. Heero departs with a smile on his face, knowing he'll see Relena again in the near future.

Mariemaia Army[]

One year after the end of the Eve Wars, in A.C. 196, Heero joins Duo, Quatre, and Trowa with sending their Gundams into the Sun to be destroyed. However, when the Barton Foundation, led by Heero's old boss Dekim Barton and his granddaughter Mariemaia, who proclaims herself the illegitimate daughter of Trieze, declare war on the Earth Sphere Unified Nation along with their colony, L-3 X-18999, Heero and Duo travel to the colony, supported by Noin and Sally Po, only to be engaged by Trowa in one of the Mariemaia Army's new Serpent mobile suits and Wufei in the Altron. Both manage to escape, and later learn that Dekim intends to drop X-18999 on Earth as part of a renewed attempt at the original Operation Meteor after a still very much alive Zechs attempted to stop the Serpents from being shipped to Earth from MO-III. With Trowa's help, they save X-18999, but while Zechs destroys MO-III, Dekim escapes to Earth, as does Mariemaia with Relena as her hostage. While Heero leaves Duo and Trowa behind to make sure the colony's orbit remains stable, he departs on a shuttle to rendezvous with Wing Zero after Quatre and the Maguanac Corps were able to recover the disposal satellite the Gundams were on and send Wing Zero to him.

Once aboard, Heero heads for Earth, but once more is engaged by Wufei in the Altron. As they clash, Heero tries to get Wufei to stop, but Wufei is convinced that fighting is the only way to attain peace, having not let go of his belief that his battle with Trieze is not over, even after Trieze committed suicide during the Eve Wars on Altron's beam trident. Only when Heero asks himself, with Wufei listening in, how many more times he has to kill that little girl and her puppy who died during one of his first missions under Doctor J, that Wufei hesitates, then watches shocked as Heero gives up and sends Wing Zero plummeting into the ocean. Shaken by this, and realizing how he's only increasing the chance of something tragic like the self-detonation of his home colony happening again if he keeps fighting, Wufei finally comes to his senses and stands with the common people as they rise up against the Mariemaia Army, demanding peace. Meanwhile, Wing Zero reactivates of its own accord with the ZERO System, convincing Heero they have one last mission to accomplish together.

Traveling to Brussels, Belgium where the ESUN Presidential Palace is located, where Dekim, Mariemaia, and Relena are bunkered, Heero takes aim at the bunker with the Wing Zero's Twin Buster Rifle. Contacting the bunker, he offers a question to them:

Heero: Let me confirm: Your shelter shields are activated?
Dekim: What are you planning?!
Heero: Your shelter is secure, isn't it?
Mariemaia: Of course it is. See for yourself just how powerless you are.
Heero: Roger that.
Mariemaia: (horrified gasp)
~ Heero just showed Mariemaia what happens when you cross him.

As Mariemaia realizes to her horror that Heero is going to fire anyway, despite Relena being inside the bunker, Heero fires his first shot, landing a direct hit. As he fires the second one, the recoil causes the damage Wing Zero sustained from the earlier fight with Altron to worsen as its crippled arm dislocates from the shoulder. Nevertheless, even as Wing Zero starts taking fire from the mobile suits and mobile dolls defending the bunker, Heero prepares a third and final shot. He lets it go, but the recoil is too much for the crippled Wing Zero to sustain and it is engulfed in explosions as it is ripped apart by its own firepower. By some miracle, the cockpit survives intact, and Heero stumbles out. He manages to get into the bunker shortly after Lady Une and Relena are able to slap Mariemaia to her senses, and she takes a bullet meant for Relena from Dekim, who is then shot dead by one of his own troops for betraying Trieze before he can try to shoot Relena again. Heero attempts to shoot Mariemaia, but his own pistol clicks empty. Declaring he's killed Mariemaia, and he doesn't have to kill again, Heero collapses, being tended to by Relena while Lady Une orders the soldiers to get Mariemaia medical attention immediately.

Some time later, Duo, Trowa, and Quatre self-detonate their Gundams, with Wufei destroying Altron separate from them. As the Gundam pilots go their separate ways with their battles over, Heero remains close to Relena, serving as a bodyguard for her as mobile suits are never seen again and peace finally comes to Earth and the Colonies.

Frozen Teardrop[]

At an unspecified date, Heero is cryogenically frozen by Preventer and stored at the Mars Preventer base. Given the code name 'Sleeping Beauty/Princess Aurora' due to the appearance of his capsule, he remains there for decades until he is awoken in MC (Mars Colony) 0022, when he is awoken to participate in Operation Mythos.

After awakening, Heero is approached by Master Chang and Father Maxwell, who ask him to fight again in one last mission. For this purpose he becomes partners with Duo Maxwell and becomes the pilot of the 'Snow White', vowing to kill Relena once again.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a hero, he has laughed evily thrice within the first five episodes of Gundam Wing and sometimes in the Gundam and Super Robot Wars games as well; this can easily throw off a lot of viewers thinking about Morality between the two sides. Though, it should actually be expected in a Gundam series, which does have Moral Complexity as one of its main themes.
    • Because of this, his evil laugh is one of his anti-heroic traits.
