Lt. Zachary Garber is the main protagonist of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). He is a transit authority officer. After giving a group of Japanese businessmen a tour through his complex, Garber is contacted by Mr. Blue, who has hijacked Pelham One Two Three. Garber became concerned about the passengers Blue and his men held captive. He had 1 hour to save the lives of the hostages. As the money was en route, Garber decided to meet the hijackers head on. As Blue was about to kill an undercover officer, Garber reminds the criminal mastermind that New York doesn't have the death penalty. Blue then kills himself by stepping on the third rail, much to the horror of Garber. As he comes out, the train is saved while Garber looks up the name of the surviving hijacker.
Garber pays a visit to Harold Longman and starts to question him, but Longman denies knowing anything about Pelham. As Garber leaves the room, he hears Longman sneeze and looks at him with a smirk, knowing that he had found the last hijacker.
He was portrayed by the late Walter Matthau.
