Hero Overview

No see, I don't think if it like I'm saving the world. The fact is, it's cause I'm usually trying to challenge the strongest warriors I can find. That's how this tournament happened too. But I can't bear the thought of innocent lives getting wiped out just cause I wanna fight the best. So I'll do what I can for them.
~ Goku to Android 17 in Funimation's Dragon Ball Super dub.
You haven't figured it out yet? I'm the Saiyan who came all the way from Earth for the sole purpose of beating you. I am the warrior you've heard of in legends, pure of heart and awakened by fury, that's what I am. I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN!!! SON GOKU!!!
~ Goku's speech to Frieza in Dragon Ball Z: Kai.
KAMEHAMEHA!!!!
~ Goku using Kamehameha

Kakarot, better known as Son Goku, is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise.

Born on Planet Vegeta to a race of powerful and barbaric alien warriors known as the Saiyans, Kakarot was sent to Earth as a baby by the Saiyan Army to destroy all life on the planet and conquer it for its future sale. However, after a head injury, Goku forgot all about his violent Saiyan origins, and he would befriend its populace and devote himself to protecting the Earth from all those who threaten it, as well as strive to become the strongest warrior possible.

In Japanese, he is voiced by Masako Nozawa (who also voiced all his heroic male relatives) in the Japanese version of the anime, by the late Kirby Morrow (who also voiced Eric from Barbie in the Nutcracker) in the Ocean English dub, and by Sean Schemmel in the Funimation English dub (who also voices King Kai and Nail in same anime). He is also voiced by Seth Green, Hugh Davidson, Jeffrey Watson, Dave Bridges, Ian James Corlett, Peter Kelamis, David Gasman, Steve Blum, Nesty Calvo Ramirez, Jeremiah Yurk, Yuri Lowenthal, Richard Ian Cox, and Lex Lang.

Personality[]

Despite all my heinous provocations on Namek, Goku still couldn't will himself to destroy me. He's a nobleman of great moral clarity. So pure, he makes me want to vomit!
~ Frieza regarding Goku's pure hearted nature.

Goku is known for his cheerful, energetic personality and his love of competition (specifically sport fighting and eating). He has remarkable intuition at seeing the good in others in spite of their actions, though his capacity for forgiving his enemies has occasionally been criticized as excessive; Goku, for the most part, only fights to win, and spares his enemies after defeating them only for them to attack him when his back is turned. His staggering power is simultaneously reined in and enhanced by his fierce loyalty and morality.

When he is first discovered by Grandpa Gohan, Goku was aggressive, disagreeable, and prone to violence; after falling down a huge waterfall, Goku suffered a head injury that made him calm and friendly. There seem to be two possibilities for his behaviour - his Saiyan nature was making him destablise a victim planet, or what seems the most likely option, his significant grief over being separated from his parents; his subsequent amnesia is thus either him forgetting his Saiyan bloodlust or forgetting his parents, meaning he now has nothing to grieve.

In Dragon Ball Son Goku was an especially naive child, which was largely due to being self-rearing for years after his guardian, Grandpa Gohan, went away (inexplicablyto him). While highly cautious at first, once he began his journey, he lost any sense of fear. Due to ignorance, he was unaware of the concept of gender or personal space, thus didn't understand that he was intruding upon Bulma's personal space when checking for her "tail." He was really innocent, so that Bulma's attempts to seduce him simply confused him, which is a reaction he would repeat upon the times of meeting Chi-Chi. His innocence lead him to being mislead or exploited a few times, though one of his more savvy friends would save him or he would accidentally get himself out of the situation.

During Dragon Ball as a child, he didn't refrain from killing an opponent, although he typically didn't aim to kill either; perhaps due to lacking the control he gained in adulthood, he ends up killing numerous foes, such as multiple members of the Red Ribbon Army, most of King Piccolo's spawn and the Demon King himself (albeit, King Piccolo's case was out of rage due to deaths of close friends caused by him). Despite his hand in ending lives, he never felt remorse nor guilt, partially due to the villains being pure evil and partially his own lack of understanding of death. Once he grew to understand the concept of death, from the deaths albeit temporary of his closest friends, and deaths of casual friends he met on his journeys, plus learning the real reason his Grandpa Gohan "vanished," thereby began his tendency to avoid mortal blows.

In Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z as an adult, he avoids killing to the point that could be considered irrational, although his justifications change depending upon context; he asks Yajirobe to not kill Vegeta due to a desire to fight a worthy opponent again in the future - which was disastrous in the short-term, as Vegeta's own quest for Dragon Balls on Namek lead him to murder an innocent Namekian village, who couldn't be revived after the fact since Vegeta didn't count as one of Frieza's underlings like the other fatalities; although, in the long term, it turned out to be wise decision, as Vegeta reformed (gradually), becomes a crucial ally in future conflicts, becomes Bulma's true love, and father of Trunks, who is a hero in various timelines. Yet back during the saga on Namek, Goku disabled the Ginyu Force in a manner that would cause them to be unable to keep fighting for some time, but eventually recover; they were an example of how Goku refuses to kill an opponent if they are weaker than him, as it contradicts his own warrior code.

Goku's perhaps most extreme case of mercy was in his fight against Frieza on Namek; Goku's transformation into a Super Saiyan drove him to be more brutal than usual, but upon gaining a handle on the power, he was able to overpower the tyrant. Even though he was aware of Frieza's hand in blowing up Planet Vegeta, exterminating the Saiyans, including his own parents, exterminating uncountable other races, plus the fact he was a conqueror of worlds who sold people into slavery and/or stripped their worlds for resources, and would torture and murder people for amusement, and corrupted anyone who fell into his employ, all of which Frieza did without mercy, pity, or regret, yet in spite of this, Goku was willing to spare him. Goku's reason being that he felt that Frieza had been bested, thus the fear of a greater power and humiliation would be sufficient punishment. Even when Frieza's deceptive attack backfired, cutting himself in half, his pleas for help reached Goku, although he was reluctant at first due to knowing how many people's plea for mercy that Frieza ignored. Nevertheless, Goku shared some energy with Frieza, enough for him to escape; when Frieza once again tried to attack, Goku was pushed to lethally retaliate (though, Frieza survived crippled, was rebuilt as a cyborg, and finally killed for real by Future Trunks).

After Frieza was revived in Dragon Ball Super, going on to actually train, when he and Goku reunited on Earth, Goku wasn't afraid, rather amused by Frieza's return, although angered by the damage he had already caused in short time; both warriors had achieved god-like power levels, thus fought until Frieza ran out of stamina because of his ego rushing him to combat before being ready; Goku was willing to let him go, in the chance for a rematch later. However, due to Goku dropping his guard and yet another dirty trick, Goku was beaten; Vegeta stepped in, managing to defeat Frieza. However, again, Frieza refused to concede, so blew up the Earth. Thanks to a time travel do-over technique thanks to Whis, a short amount of time was reversed, but enough to save the Earth; Goku rushed to deliver a fatal attack to finally kill Frieza, showing that despite his desire for strong opponents and capacity for mercy, he can be pushed to be brutal if necessary.

As shown with Frieza, Cell, and Buu, Goku doesn't judge an enemy, no matter how vile their actions have been, rather focusing on the current situation of the fight; he repeatedly shows mercy to Frieza, and after his match with Cell, he provides the android a Senzu bean to restore his stamina to allow a fair fight; Majin Buu is typically too chaotic to be reasoned with, although Goku was able to convince Fat Buu to cease obeying Babidi, which after a rampage, Fat Buu was redeemed by a friendship with Mr. Satan, albeit his evil side escaped after he was traumatised by the deaths of Satan and his puppy Bee (which he reversed, but damage was done). After Fat Buu aided in the fight against the final evolution of his evil side, Kid Buu, Goku accepted the Majin as one of his allies and friends, forgiving him for the misdeeds he committed, since they were influenced by his evil side. The most notable exception to when Goku doesn't forgive a foe's past sins is when Goku Black boasts about murdering Chi-Chi and Goten; they were in a possible alternate future, but Goku was so enraged that he ceased holding anything back, attempting to kill the malicious god, although becoming unable to so.

Goku could be considered a negligent parent by most standards, however, this isn't a conscious choice nor lack of care for his children and then granddaughter. As he spent the majority of his own childhood alone, he came to the conclusion that after infancy, a child doesn't need much attention at all. Also, his own genetics work against him, as a pure-blood Saiyan, he has the trait of Saiyans lacking the ability to be nurturing and present for their offspring; his own parents were an exceptions, whereas he is to a lesser extent.

Goku often sees good in people, even when most others cannot; a few of his friends found in Dragon Ball were first encounters as minor threats like thieves or major threats like rival martial arts school pupils, yet became close friends. The first most significant redemption he commenced was Piccolo Jr., later known as just Piccolo. Despite him being an amnesiac reincarnation of the wicked King Piccolo, Goku trusted him in the fight against his sudden Saiyan brother, Raditz, in which Goku took a fatal beam attack to also hold his brother in place. While dying, Goku asked Piccolo to train Gohan, his only son (at the time), trusting the boy's care to him, and they all needed to prepare for the arrival of two more much stronger Saiyans; as Piccolo was pragmatic, he accepted the offer. While Goku was perhaps inadvertently inconsiderate to Chi-Chi, as she was horrified her baby boy was in the hands of a creature born for vengeance, it was a sensible decision. Piccolo was heartless to Gohan at first, and brutal in the training, but over months, Piccolo bonded with the boy like a brother or son, which changed the entity of evil into one of Goku's oldest and most loyal friends. While Vegeta's path wasn't as swift nor smooth, by him replicating decisions done by Goku in an attempt to surpass him in power, Vegeta eventually changed from an egotistical monster into a difficult ally, until eventually becoming a true hero and friend (although, still with a sense of rivalry and some acerbic jabs).

Despite appearing foolish, Goku does indicate tactical and strategic abilities; he used his own history of his now-absent tail, which paralysed him with pain, to similarly disable Raditz; he shared the info that when a Saiyan's tail is severed, they can no longer assume Great Ape form, which Yajirobe exploits to weaken Vegeta; while in a filler, he was able to understand physics well enough to Kamehameha his space ship out of the gravity of a sun; he realised that Gohan's latent potential meant he had the greatest chance at defeating Cell; and he told Piccolo to teach the Fusion Dance to Goten and Trunks, as they could defeat Majin Buu. Although, the latter two examples indicate he can be flawed in his plans, as he fails to consider every variable; he failed to understand that Gohan typically lacks the same zest for battle that he has, which resulted in the boy suffering greatly (while he eventually awakened to Super Saiyan 2, Goku failed to expect him becoming intoxicated by the power, thus forcing Cell into such desperation that he would try to explode the planet - Goku paid for the mistake with his life, however, became instrumental in supporting Gohan's final Kamehameha that disintegrated Cell); and with Goten and Trunks, he failed to take into account that they are children, and more immature than even he was as a child, thus their Fusion Gotenks ended up being too cocky and playful to properly vanquish Super Buu.

Goku's excitability and enthusiasm for battle ensures he remains fearless. He has confidence in his strength, which can have negative repercussions, especially when combined with his mercy. After seemingly defeating an enemy, or merely having the upper hand, he habitually drops his guard, which makes him vulnerable to counterattacks, an occurrence he almost never expects. Likewise, his enthusiasm for fighting can cause him to prolong a fight, which can result in an opponent finding a weakness in his defense, his power to run out, or enabling collateral damage by virtue of not defeating the enemy sooner.

Goku can also be very blunt, and not afraid to express his opinion in a discussion, such as when he questioned Krillin's marriage to Android 18. Despite his kind-hearted nature, Goku can feel incredible anger in cases of extreme turmoil, such as the death of a close friend/relative, or when someone murders many innocents needlessly. He has a simple, practical view of the world and is somewhat naive to the world around him. Because of this, many characters incorrectly assume him to be somewhat stupid, although once he has a basic understanding of things, he learns very quickly. His most remarkable ability is his will to succeed, his tenacity and persistence. He is always determined to push himself beyond his limitations, and never give up even when the odds are stacked against him.

Goku's gregarious nature makes him happy to approach strangers, however, perhaps due to his untamed upbringing or inherent attitude, he can unknowingly disrespect beings of high status. His equal treatment of people, thereby also can provoke discord, as Gods of Destruction tend to be easily offended; plus, he approached the Omni-King, Zeno, without reverence or fear, which other deities feared would cause a cataclysmic reaction. Luckily, Zeno enjoyed Goku's friendliness, and even considers him one of his only friends, wanting to play with him. Nevertheless, Goku's ignorance of decorum or societal norms can cause negative consequences; most notably, Goku's lack of boundaries with Zamasu provoked horrific reactions - granted, the evil god was always walking towards destruction, but Goku's superior strength and lack of "respect" made Zamasu obsessed with him in particular.

Powers and Abilities[]

Come if you wanna! I'll take you on! Gather the strongest guys you can and come at me! I'll beat every last one of them!
~ Goku to the Gods of Destruction.

Goku is the second strongest mortal in Universe 7 (surpassed only by fellow Saiyan Broly). One of the most powerful characters in the franchise, Goku can hold his own if not take on seemingly any opponent. His natural talent for combat along with his unwavering drive has taken his power to unprecedented levels in his life. He has been seen to put up a reasonable fight against the Destroyer Beerus, and later on even against his teacher Whis, although both still held back greatly. Ultimately, at his highest level of power, he is unarguably the most powerful mortal in the history of the Multiverse, far stronger than any Destroyer and reaching levels that only the Angels could possibly rival or surpass, with only the Omni Kings and Grand Priest being his certain superior.

As an infant, he could drag large rocks tied to him while pursuing food and resist his adoptive grandpa's attempts to hold him down. As a child, Goku could easily defeat many foes. When first meeting Bulma, he was unfazed when rundown by her car and shot, quickly picking up and throwing her car with her in it. He defeated a Pteranodon, a pack of wolves and a Bear Thief. When meeting Yamcha, Goku fought on par with the bandit despite weakened from hunger. Later, as a Great Ape, Goku effortlessly destroyed Emperor Pilaf's castle.

While training under Master Roshi, Goku consistently outperformed Krillin and amazed the teacher, including moving large boulders and running a 100-meter dash in 8.5 seconds. Goku and Krillin accomplished various grueling labors a day that outperformed an entire workforce of adults. By the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku's might could move a massive boulder and fight on par with the seasoned Roshi. In the tournament, he breezed through the preliminaries while holding back significantly and developed various new techniques against his foes. In the finals, Goku fought on par with the seasoned veteran "Jackie Chun" and likewise replicate practically every maneuver his opponent used on him, narrowly losing by lack of stamina after a double count-out.

While fighting the Red Ribbon Army, Goku did not experience any serious physical trouble against the majority of their fighters, with only General Blue providing any meaningful resistance through the use of his telekinetic powers. In hand-to-hand combat, however, Goku still managed to handily come out on top after a short but intense struggle.

When facing Mercenary Tao, Goku was toyed with by the deadly assassin and only managed to mildly hurt the foe with his Kamehameha before being defeated himself. After training with Korin, Goku defeated Mercenary Tao with ease, able to block Tao's Dodon Ray with only mild pain. Goku then proceeded to single-handedly destroy the entire Red Ribbon Army's headquarters and all its soldiers. Even Staff Officer Black's Battle Jacket was beaten easily.

To get help from Fortuneteller Baba, Goku faced and defeated her supernatural foes including Bandages the Mummy and Spike the Devil Man with mild effort. He then fought on par with the resurrected Grandpa Gohan, who resorted to grabbing Goku's tail to get an advantage. During the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku defeated a former champion in King Chappa in the preliminaries. He gradually overwhelmed Krillin, even taking Krillin's Kamehameha with a single hand. As Krillin attempted to stop Goku by grabbing his tail, Goku revealed to have train it to be as strong as the rest of his body. Goku then defeated Krillin too fast for anyone but Tien to see. Against Tien in the finals, Goku proved able to counter virtually everything Tien used on him, forcing him to instead rely on a count-out by destroying the ring while he flew.

After drinking the Ultra Divine Water, Goku's potential was unlocked, able to fight on par with King Piccolo restored to his prime, just barely defeating the evil Namekian. After training under Mr. Popo for three years, Goku's all-around performance increased remarkably to surpass his teachers. In the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, with weighted clothes, he effortlessly made it to the semi-finals. Once removing his weighted clothes, Goku's speed proved too great for Tien to even perceive and quickly defeated Tien. In the finals, Goku noticeably outfights King Piccolo's stronger reincarnation, Piccolo Junior, gradually wearing down the foe to ultimately defeat him and become acknowledged as the strongest in the world.

While Goku's might seemed extraordinary by human standards, it was revealed that by even Low-level Saiyan standards, Goku's power was considered extremely pitiful. By the time he fought Raditz, a Mid-Level warrior, Goku was considerably outclassed even alongside Piccolo, requiring a suicidal effort from Goku to defeat Raditz. However, Goku proved himself a late bloomer, as his true potential began to show after training with King Kai. To which, he easily defeated Nappa and fought on par with Vegeta, a Super Elite warrior. After training at x100 Earth's gravity, Goku's power far exceeded Saiyan standards, easily defeating most of the Ginyu Force and fight on par with Captain Ginyu, the Galactic Frieza Army's strongest warriors.

He can also handle the strain of Kaio-ken unfazed at x10 and endure a x20 Kaioken. After healing from his Body Change experience, Goku's power increased immensely, and through various tactics and newfound drives, forced the powerful tyrant Frieza to fight at 50% of his true power. Once transforming into Super Saiyan, Goku completely outmatches Frieza at 100%. In the anime, however, Frieza stood up to Goku for an extended period of time and even push him back a few times before his stamina gave out, although Goku had been holding back, as once fighting seriously, he calmly dominated Frieza.

After training with the Yhybrids, Goku's power increased enough to defeat both Mecha Frieza and King Cold, as he originally would have had it not been for Future Trunks easily doing so. In their brief spar as Super Saiyans, Goku showed even more power than Future Trunks. Goku effortlessly deflecting all of Future Trunks' sword attacks with a finger, leaving the hybrid in awe, albeit Goku noted that Future Trunks wasn't fighting with true desire. Upon the arrival of the androids, Goku easily outmatched Android 19 before the heart virus took effect. Afterward, however, Goku was gradually overpowered by the android.

Upon recovering, Goku noted that he could not defeat the androids or Cell. After training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Super Saiyan Goku showed far more power than any of his allies, enough that it nearly destroyed Korin Tower and shook the Lookout, all while at less than half his might. Against Cell, Goku fought on par with Perfect Cell, a feat no one could match (let alone top) but Super Saiyan 2 Gohan.

In the anime, Goku won the Other World Tournament defeating the greatest warriors in the history of Universe 7 with countless millennia-worth of experience each. Seven years later, Super Saiyan Goku was noted to have 3,000 kili - power to destroy several planets. Vegeta noted that Super Saiyan 2 Goku surpassed Gohan's power when he defeated Super Perfect Cell. With just transforming into Super Saiyan 3, Goku causes worldwide earthquakes with Tien worrying Goku could destroy the planet by the sheer weight of his power. Against Majin Buu, despite the Majin's limitless resilience and unpredictable nature, Super Saiyan 3 Goku could fight on par with and continuously pressure him. Ultimately, Goku admitted to being holding back considerably as Super Saiyan 3's intensity was draining Goku's time to stay in the Living World while dead and probably could have defeated the fat Majin if he was trying for it. In the anime, Super Saiyan 3 Goku manages to hold his own against Super Buu (Gotenks absorption) and the fake Ultimate Gohan (who mimicked Gohan's true strength) for an extended period of time. Super Saiyan 3 Goku fought on par with Kid Buu and was noted that his full power could wipe out the Majin. However, he had trouble gathering the necessary energy since his living body hasn't adapted to the form yet. Regardless, his performance left Vegeta acknowledging Goku as the strongest Saiyan.

In the manga, Super Saiyan Goku fights and defeats both final form Frieza and Perfect Cell in a few blows during his image training, and then faces down Kid Buu. Upon encountering base Goku, Beerus notes that he is not strong enough to defeat Frieza, something King Kai agrees with. During the first fight against Beerus as Super Saiyan 3, the God of Destruction proved himself utterly outclass Goku, using less than 10% power. After Goku attained Super Saiyan God, Goku is strong enough to face off against Beerus and inflict some damage, to which their fight caused the universe to start to crumble from the massive energy they exerted. In the manga, Super Saiyan God Goku managed to destroy Beerus' Sphere of Destruction, though it used up all of his power to do so. After the Super Saiyan God form's time limit expired in the anime, Goku reverted to Super Saiyan but was still able to compete against Beerus as he managed to absorb the godly power.

While Goku trained under Whis, in the anime, Whis noted that Goku was only on the lowest levels of godly power. At this point, Goku was powerful enough to survive an unrestrained ki blast from Beerus in just his base form. In the anime, while fighting Frieza with his base form, it is noted by Krillin and Gohan that they could not see their movements, while they had previously seen Super Saiyan God Goku and Beerus' movements. In his Saiyan beyond God state, he pressured Frieza in his strengthened true form, whose first form easily defeated Super Saiyan Gohan. Goku also learned to become a Super Saiyan Blue, which exceeds all previous forms. Even so, Goku was completely outmatched by the full power of the tyrant's new Golden form. Instead, Goku had to endure a prolonged beatdown until Frieza tired out from lack of proper control in his new form. In the manga, it is noted Goku and Vegeta had to team up to defeat Frieza.

During the Tournament of Destroyers, base Goku was noted to move so fast that Krillin could not even see his movements as he fought Botamo. In his base form, he held his own against Second Form Frost. Once he turned Super Saiyan, Goku dominated Final Form Frost and was only defeated because Frost cheated. When Goku fought against Hit, Goku was initially held his own against him with just his base power, and with his Super Saiyan form, he could outmatch Hit's normal level of power. In the manga, Super Saiyan God Goku was comparable in power to Hit's full power. With Super Saiyan Blue, Goku broke the Time-Skip. In the anime, his Super Saiyan Blue overwhelmed the assassin's full power. This allowed Hit to instinctively improve his battle prowess and outmatch Goku. This forced Goku to resort to the Kaio-ken to further power up his Super Saiyan Blue form, allowing him to outmatch the assassin's improved Time-Skip. However, Goku admitted that Hit's performance was actually restricted because his skills are better suited to killing and as such had to hold back to not break the tournament rules.

Later in the anime, when facing Goku Black, Goku took his evil look-alike's first blast unfazed in base form. Using Super Saiyan 2, he fought on par with Black, who previously dominated Future Trunks in the same form. The fight ultimately left Black battered and in awe at Goku's might, while Goku remained basically unharmed. When Super Saiyan 2 Goku fights Zamasu, Gowasu notes that Goku's power is in the same realm as Beerus', having gradually overwhelmed Zamasu and defeating him, although Beerus is offended by this statement. Later in the anime, Super Saiyan Blue Goku fought on par with Super Saiyan Rosé Black, occasionally outmaneuvering him, but was critically hurt by Black's Black Kamehameha while held down by Future Zamasu. During the third battle in the anime, upon learning Black killed his family in the previous timeline, despite the hole in his chest, an enraged Goku overwhelmed Black and Future Zamasu simultaneously.

However, once letting his guard down and Black recovered, he critically wounded Goku. In the manga, against Fused Zamasu, Goku was initially completely overpowered even alongside Vegeta but was able to defeat the fused Kai in an energy clash. Goku also proceeded to briefly overwhelm Fused Zamasu using his Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken in the anime despite his injured arms, and pressure the fused god using his Completed Super Saiyan Blue. Later, Goku faced Hit again and overpowered him in a straight-up fight with only Super Saiyan Blue, noting that Hit's Time-Skip would no longer affect him. The fight eventually ended in a stalemate, though Hit was only held his own against Goku due to his Tides of Time allowing him to avoid damage, which was easily broken through by Goku when he became aware of it at the end of the fight.

At the start of the Universe Survival Saga, Goku's continued training eventually enabled him to make Whis fight with some effort, as he used his staff and energy blasts against Goku, albeit Goku required using Super Saiyan to handle the latter. Later, with Super Saiyan Blue, Goku was able to actually harm Whis while weighed down by the Gravity Room. Although it was through the obscure method of biting the angel, he then followed up with throwing Whis, who still landed gracefully.

In the anime, during the Zen Exhibition Match, Goku's base form matched Bergamo, the strongest warrior of Universe 9. With Super Saiyan, he easily outpaced the giant Bergamo before easily defeated him with Super Saiyan Blue, to which the gathered deities noted that Goku's power rivaled the gods. Immediately afterward, Super Saiyan Blue Goku fought against Toppo, a Universe 11 candidate for the God of Destruction, and gradually overwhelmed his opponent. In the manga, while watching the Zen Exhibition Match, Goku in base form stayed conscious when Rumsshi used his Battle Roar, which knocked out all the Supreme Kais present. When fighting Toppo in the extra match, Goku's Super Saiyan 1 to 3 were each easily overwhelmed by the Pride Trooper. Using Super Saiyan God, Toppo had to unleash his godly ki to fight evenly with the foe. Once Goku used Super Saiyan Blue and attacked with a full power punch, Toppo got serious and countered Goku, defeating him in one blow. After the battle Toppo complimented Goku's strength, noting that he would have been defeated if hit by that blow. Also, it was later noted that Goku underestimated Toppo and wasn't fighting seriously in that final exchange.

During recruitment for Team Universe 7 in the anime, base form Goku matched the highly strengthened Shape-Up Good Buu, but he is defeated by ring out. When he recruited Android 17, who had powered up massively since facing Cell, though two fought on par (with Goku using Super Saiyan Blue in the anime while using Super Saiyan 3 in the manga). During a tag-team match against Piccolo and Gohan with Tien, Goku manages to hold off a Hyper Explosive Demon Wave from Piccolo and fight evenly with base form Gohan. Once Gohan used Potential Unleashed state, Goku used Super Saiyan 2 to compete with his son. Goku then fought evenly against Potential Unleashed Gohan's full power with Super Saiyan Blue, utilizing the Kaio-ken to defeat Gohan instantly.

When discussing recruiting Frieza for the Tournament of Power, Goku was confident he could defeat Frieza if he betrayed them. In the anime, base form Goku withstood Sidra's Energy of Destruction, though unable to get control over it, requiring Beerus' aid. Then, Goku faced Frieza to see who could land the first blow. While Frieza had greatly increased in both power and control of it from constant image training countless times since his second death, Super Saiyan Blue Goku scored a simultaneous knockout against Golden Frieza, to which Whis noting that they were equal in power. In the manga, Goku has longer fight with Frieza that, while unknown, ends with both being equally battered.

Alongside Vegeta and Frieza, Goku is seen as one of the trump cards for Universe 7's potential victory in the Tournament of Power.

During the Tournament of Power, Goku easily fended off base Ganos. He was unable to get free of Nink's grip, needing to turn Super Saiyan Blue to free himself. He was able to hold his own against the Trio De Dangers in his base form. Once he turned Super Saiyan, he was able to easily knock Chappil and Comfrey out of the arena with a Ki Blast. When the Trio de Dangers charged their Triangle Danger Beam, Goku and Vegeta turned Super Saiyan Blue and overpowered the beam with a Final Kamehameha, knocking the Trio out of the arena in the process. Whilst fighting Caulifla in her Super Saiyan Third Grade state, Goku easily outmatched her as Super Saiyan. As Super Saiyan 2, he matches Super Saiyan 2 Caulifla in combat. Berserker Super Saiyan Kale easily overpowered Goku as Super Saiyan 2. Goku turned Super Saiyan Blue and fired a God Kamehameha at Kale, however she walked through it without taking any damage. Despite taking a beating from Kale, Goku showed no signs of damage. In base form, Goku withstood Toppo's Justice Flash and held his own against Tupper and Zoiray but was unable to move when Tupper used his increased weight on him. In the manga base, Goku fended off Kahseral, Vuon, Kunshi, Tupper, and Zoiray but was pinned down by Tupper's weight. Using Super Saiyan, easily lifted the heavy foe up and threw him aside. Goku then proceeded to outmatch the five Pride Troopers, easily defending and countering their blows before taking them down with his own.

Later, base Goku struggled somewhat against Rozie yet consistently blocks her attacks. However, this constant defensive tactic was revealed to simply let Goku better learn and see through Rozie's fighting style, quickly breaking through her technique and overwhelming her, forcing her to retreat. With Super Saiyan God, Goku initially struggled against Dyspo, however after he read his movements, he matched The Sonic Warrior in combat. As Super Saiyan Blue, Goku took no damage from Kunshi's explosive threads and easily overpowered him. As Super Saiyan, Goku was unable to get out of Maji Kayo's grip, however, once he turned Super Saiyan Blue, he immediately freed himself. In his base form, Goku matches Ribrianne in combat, however his attacks unfazed her. As Super Saiyan Blue, Goku easily knocked away Super Ribrianne.

Jiren, a mortal warrior whose might surpasses any God of Destruction, viewed Goku as one of the only warriors he was required to defeat at the tournament. In their fight, base Goku's Kamehameha couldn't get pass Jiren's sheer ki. Strikes from Goku at Super Saiyan levels 1 and 2 completely unfazed Jiren. Super Saiyan God Goku made Jiren start blocking, but with one finger. Super Saiyan Blue Goku made Jiren fight back - even managing to knock back Jiren with a punch the Pride Trooper blocked and needing to dodge Goku's Kamehameha. He was briefly able to stand against Jiren but ultimately even with Kaioken X-20, Goku was severely beaten but Goku was able to stay on the ring after being hit by the Power Impact.

X20 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken Goku's usage of the Universe 7's Spirit Bomb could clash with Jiren briefly, making Jiren actually struggle against it, with it being accepted that the Spirit Bomb would have beaten him, but was ultimately overpowered. When the Spirit Bomb collided with Goku, his willpower reacted to absorb it and unlock a deeper part of his potential for Ultra Instinct -Sign-. In this state, Goku's ki shook the entire World of Void, a realm of infinite size. Against Toppo and Dyspo, he nonchalantly blocked their simultaneous assault and dodged the former's Justice Flash. Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku then fought on par with and eventually pushed back Jiren, landing solid blows that rattled the fighter and shocked the spectating gods. However, Goku's new form soon proved underdeveloped and faded away, allowing Jiren to swiftly end the battle.

Later, despite still being very exhausted and battered, he fended off a three-way assault from Koitsukai, Panchia and Bollarator in his base form. Against Super Saiyan 2 Caulifla, despite not yet regaining enough stamina to even go Super Saiyan, his incredible skill allowed him to hold his own against Caulifla. Once managing to use Super Saiyan 2 himself, Goku gained a decided advantage over her. This prompted Caulifla to get help from Super Saiyan (perfect energy control) Kale. Despite the two-on-one battle, Goku was still kept his ground, taking their various attacks with only minor pain. Once showing Super Saiyan 3 for a brief moment, the two Universe 6 Saiyans were left in awe at it. As Kale learned to harness the absolute power of her Super Saiyan form and perfectly synchronized her attacks with Caulifla, Goku was put on a complete defense, but still held his own enough to reject aid from Frieza. Once using Super Saiyan God, he took both Universe 6 Saiyans at the same time, with Kale somewhat holding her own against him while Caulifa was completely overwhelmed and beaten, forcing them to fuse after Caulifa was severely damaged and unable to continue fighting. While initially overwhelmed as Super Saiyan God, Goku held his own long enough to use Super Saiyan Blue. While matching Kefla's might, Goku's still diminished stamina forced him to use Kaio-ken to compensate. Ultimately, his battered state let him get knocked out with a single kick to the neck. Before he could be eliminated, Goku re-enters Ultra Instinct -Sign- and completely outclasses Super Saiyan 2 Kefla, calmly evading her assaults and likewise pummeling her even as she entered a Strengthened Super Saiyan 2 state. When Kefla unleashed her last-ditch final attack, Goku naturally dodged her barrage of blasts and knocked Kefla out of the arena with a Sliding Kamehameha.

Afterward, despite once again being extremely exhausted from using Ultra Instinct -Sign-, he fended off Zarbuto, Rabanra, and Zirloin of Universe 2 simultaneously. While initially overwhelmed by the intense gravity from the Formation State trio's Pretty Black Hole, which Goku noted was much greater than the Capsule Corp's gravity room, Goku regained his footing in his base form (while 17 and 18 were stuck kneeling), turn Super Saiyan Blue and eliminate the three from Universe 2. In base form, Goku took no damage from Damon's blindsiding attacks. His punches could also rupture the arena, upturning a stretching length of the area near him, making it impossible for Damon to get a proper footing and allowing Android 17 to eliminate the diminutive Universe 4 opponent. In base form, Goku held his own against Team Universe 3, even after his movements have been analyzed. Against Koichiarator, Goku and Vegeta turned Super Saiyan Blue and held their own against the mighty fused warrior, even matching Koichiarator's beam with a Kamehameha and a Galick Gun. Against Anilaza, as Super Saiyan God, Goku was overwhelmed by the giant warrior, almost being knocked out, but was saved by Frieza. While carelessly kicked by the tyrant, Goku noted that the blow barely fazed him. Together with the remaining four members of Team Universe 7, they managed to eliminate Anilaza.

During the final confrontation with Team Universe 11, fully recovered, Goku's improved strength impressed Jiren. With only Super Saiyan Blue, Goku was able to seemingly fight on even grounds with the relaxed Jiren, cheerfully fending off nearly all of Jiren's attacks while landing some of his own, even making the normally silent foe asks Goku what drives him to get so strong and proving to be considerably better than Vegeta, who was so much weaker than Jiren showed absolutely no interest in fighting him initially unlike Goku. While he accepts that he couldn't defeat Jiren in an exchange of blows, Goku instead used a series of methodical diversion tactics and after Goku held his ground long enough, it completely caught Jiren off guard, nearly eliminating the foe. This promoted Jiren to use the most strength he has ever been seen using and yet Goku still briefly kept up in hand-to-hand combat up until Jiren ultimately succeeded to initially pummel Goku, the Saiyan was able to endure the assault. Then, teaming up with Vegeta, the two attacked Jiren in their respective over-limit states, initially pressuring their foe. In an effort to defeat Jiren, Goku is able to fend off Jiren long enough to break through his defenses and secure a full-nelson lock for Vegeta to attack. Jiren however easily breaks free and swats Goku away.

In the final one-on-one confrontation against Jiren, despite regaining enough stamina to use Super Saiyan Blue, Goku is still easily outmaneuvered and pummeled, barely able to stay on his feet and keep from being eliminated. Ultimately, the feelings of his friends reaching Goku's heart mixed with Goku's disdain at Jiren lack of trust in others let Goku again unlock Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku's speed was enough to where he effortlessly evaded Jiren's next assault without Jiren realizing he was gone before calmly landing a solid blow that left Jiren momentarily reeling in pain. This performance left all the watching deities in awe at Goku's capacities with some believing Goku has finally mastered Ultra Instinct. Goku then proceeded to fight on par with Jiren at full power, able to both parry and attack Jiren. His Imperfect Instinct Kamehameha was able to force Jiren to use his full power and concentration into a large Power Impact to deflect the attack. While he was unable to dodge, Goku was able to block the majority of the attack's force by turning his Kamehameha into a barrier. Although stunned for a time, Goku was soon back on his feet and able to remain toe-to-toe with Jiren, even gaining an advantage, as he starts fully adapting to Ultra Instinct. While Jiren was able to briefly corner Goku using a hailstorm of Invisible Punches, Goku fairly quickly began getting the offensive and soon canceled the attack entirely and attacked Jiren so powerfully he made him reel in great pain.

After mastering Ultra Instinct, Goku's power skyrockets to levels far above Jiren. As Goku began easily dodging all of Jiren's attacks while simultaneously pummeling him, all the Gods of Destruction to stand in awe at Goku's growth, even gaining praise and envy from Beerus. Goku was able to then toy with Full Power Jiren, remaining completely calm as he overwhelms Jiren while Jiren struggled heavily to keep up until the emotionally scarred foe remembered his past losses and used that grief to break well-past his previous limits. Despite this enormous boost of power, Ultra Instinct Goku still fought on par with Jiren for an extended period of time, only being narrowly overpowered in a clash of energy, and over time, grew in might to be capable of gradually pushing back Jiren, dodging almost every blow unleashed by Jiren and landing his own attacks that ultimately briefly incapacitated Jiren. Once furious from Jiren attacking Team Universe 7, Goku's power skyrocketed again, seamlessly handling Jiren's attacks before decisively pummeling him into submission, ultimately leaving the battered foe to admit defeat. However, before Goku could finish the fight, Goku's body broke down from maintaining Ultra Instinct for too long, causing his energy to leak out radically and leave him in agony, causing him to revert back to the base form.

Despite the grievous injuries he endured, through sheer will Goku returned to his feet, having gone well-beyond his limits, base Goku could compete against the battered Jiren alongside Frieza and backup from 17, impressing Jiren again. Ultimately, with the aid of Frieza, Goku - rapidly flashing between the Base Form and Super Saiyan - succeeded in dragging him off the arena alongside them.

By Dragon Ball Super Broly, Goku is close to being a God and has surpassed Vegeta to the point that he is described as being desperate to catch up. Whis himself asked why Goku still seeks more power. Due to his far greater improvement in combat skills, he is proven to be much more deadly than Vegeta was, being able to trade blows with Broly and even gain the upper hand until Broly powers up further endure his attacks to transform into Super Saiyan, which allowed him to hold his own and even briefly gain the upper hand. In Super Saiyan God, he could overpower Broly's initial Wrathful form, restraining him, and was initially able to stand his ground against the fully-transformed. While in Super Saiyan Blue, he was able to single-handedly fight on par with and eventually overwhelm Wrathful Broly enough to force him to enter Super Saiyan C Type. Alongside Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta, Goku could also fight against Super Saiyan Broly for a time.

Forms[]

Great Ape/Oozaru[]

Great Ape Goku in the Dragon Ball Anime

Great Ape Goku.

The Great Ape/Oozaru form is a transformation natural to all full-blooded and half-blooded Saiyans and activated by looking at a full moon. Goku had this form throughout his childhood, but had it permanently removed by Kami sometime during the Piccolo Jr. Saga timeskip. In this form, Goku's power was 10x that of his current power level. He utilised the regular Great Ape at least 4 times in his life, possibly more, but each time was accidental. Once when his Grandpa Gohan saw it for the first time, although it's possible that there were other instances that Grandpa Gohan witnessed that led him to figure out that it was triggered by the full moon in order to tell Goku never to look at the full moon to prevent an attack from a giant ape monster. The next time confirmed by the story is when Goku accidentally killed Grandpa Gohan. He did it again in Emperor Pilaf's dungeon with Bulma, Yamcha, Puar, and Oolong, and again during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament in his match against Master Roshi. The reason Goku barely used this form was due to suffering the same weakness all low-class and half-breed Saiyans suffered: turning into a Great Ape also turned him into a mindless destructive monster with no recollection of what happened. Goku regained the power to turn into a Great Ape in Dragon Ball: GT when Old Kai regrew his tail for him, though this was only because Goku was losing against Baby and wished to experiment by combining the Super Saiyan and Great Ape forms together. After gaining Golden Great Ape and subsequently Super Saiyan 4, Goku never utilised this form again.

Kaioken[]

Goku Kaio-Ken Against Vegeta

Goku utilising Kaioken.

Goku unlocks Kaioken after spending a year training with King Kai, being the first to do so. Kaioken is technically not a transformation, but it functions like one and can even be merged with multiple Super Saiyan forms. Kaioken is a technique that multiplies ki, speed and power and Goku demonstrates the ability to heighten the effect of the Kaioken to increasingly higher multiplications from x2 to as high as x100. However, the glaring problem with Kaioken is that using it takes a heavy toll on the user's body, the higher the multiplication, the more damage the user will taken once they drop out of the form. While using Kaioken the user gains a red and exploding aura, which coats their whole body and clothes with a heavy red tint. After unlocking Super Saiyan, Goku practically abandons Kaioken for years as its drawbacks were too dangerous and its power didn't match up to Super Saiyan. Goku only begins using Kaioken again 17 years later to combine it with Super Saiyan Blue.

Super Saiyan[]

Super Saiyan Goku

Super Saiyan.

Goku unlocks this form after witnessing the brutal death of his best friend Krillin by the hands of Frieza with his resulting explosive rage unlocking his dormant Super Saiyan potential and transforming him into a Super Saiyan, the first one in centuries. In this form, his power is 50x stronger than in his normal state and allows him to fight and defeat opponents who could easily overpower Goku in his normal form with little effort. In his Super Saiyan form Goku's hair rises on end and turns golden blond, his skin considerably lightens, his aura becomes fire like, and his eyes become a turquoise green.

Super Saiyan 2nd Grade[]

SuperSaiyanBulkedGokuPanning1-1-

Goku using Super Saiyan 2nd Grade.

Goku is able to achieve this form alongside the further extreme of the form known as Super Saiyan Third Grade. However, although this new power-up would not take a hit on his speed as the successor would, he decides that staying transformed like this demands far too much ki to be spent, and so decides that the regular Super Saiyan form is best suited for combat, and thus never takes the form again.

Super Saiyan 3rd Grade[]

Images-1480282434

Super Saiyan Third Grade Goku.

Goku achieves this form in the Time Chamber while training with Gohan. Although apparently stronger than Cell in this state, Goku told Gohan he could not defeat him because the form drastically reduced speed for offensive power and thus couldn't beat Cell, because "all the power in the world would do no good if you can't even hit the guy." Because of this incredible flaw, Goku never took the form again.

Full Power Super Saiyan[]

Bgfvd

Goku as a Full Power Super Saiyan.

After realizing the weaknesses of the 2nd grade and 3rd-grade Super Saiyan forms, Goku concluded that mastery over the basic Super Saiyan form would be more effective and went on to improve his endurance in that form. To which, he focuses his training on learning to maintain Super Saiyan form for extended periods of time, gradually overcoming the heightened aggression that accompanies this form and reducing the energy drain to nearly nothing, thus achieving a max output for a Super Saiyan without drawbacks allowing him to fight at his full potential and not lose energy like an untrained Super Saiyan. While in this state Goku manifests his chi as red and pink lightning electricity in the golden aura around him.

Super Saiyan 2[]

SSJ2

Super Saiyan 2.

Goku achieved this form in another world at some point during the 7 years he was dead between the Cell and the Majin Buu story arcs. It doubles the powers of a Super Saiyan and thus increases Goku's power by 100x that of his normal state. Goku first used this form in his battle against Majin Vegeta and it became this form for battle as it was more powerful than Super Saiyan and while weaker than Super Saiyan 3 it suffered fewer drawbacks. After the discovery of Super Saiyan Blue, this form saw much less usage and only appeared when Goku fought enemies he believed not strong enough to face Blue or he didn't have enough energy to go Blue. Goku's hair is slightly longer and further on end in this form and his body now gives off lightning-like electric discharges from his increased power.

Super Saiyan 3[]

SSSJJJ-333

Super Saiyan 3.

As a Super Saiyan 3 Goku's power reaches an incredible level as a Super Saiyan 3 which gives 4 times the increase of Super Saiyan 2 so it multiplies Goku normal state's power by 400. As a SS3 Goku's hair reaches down to past his waist and a single bang hang over his face, his eyebrows disappear, his brow ridge becomes more pronounced. He achieved this form by going through intense training during the 7 years he was dead following the events with Cell. However, he has limited experience with the form which showed in its first usage as it ate through his power reserves just to maintain it as after he fought Fat Majin Buu he lost the majority of the 24 hours he had been given to return to Earth, the second attempt in front of Trunks and Goten both taking his remaining time and nearly making Goku collapse within seconds. Due to its severe drawbacks, Goku used the form as a last resort for the rest of the Buu sagas. He was forced to bring it out when he fought Kid Buu though it proved ineffective and ate through his energy faster since he was alive again. However, during Dragon Ball Super Goku has shown to have apparently overcome these drawbacks as he maintained it easily when fighting Beerus and later Future Trunks though was revealed to still be present as shown when during his fight with Caulifla he accidentally transformed into the state and tired himself out.

Golden Great Ape/Oozaru[]

Golden Great Ape Goku in GT

Goku as a Golden Oozaru.

The Golden Great Ape/Oozaru is the result of combining the Great Ape and Super Saiyan forms together, creating a transformation that dwarfs even Super Saiyan 3 in strength and power. While Vegeta (in the anime) recalled it as the form Yamoshi (the first Super Saiyan) was remembered for. The form was truly discovered by Goku who, after having his tail regrown by Old Kai, was thought up as both an experiment and a last ditch effort to defeat Baby. The form achieved it's purpose, quickly putting Baby on the defensive with it's raw strength and power but unfortunately, it was instantly discovered that it had the same weakness as the regular Great Ape transformation: it turned low-class and half-breed Saiyans into mindless monsters and it caused Goku to almost attack his own granddaughter Pan. However, Pan was able to get through to Goku by reminding him who she was and showing him memorabilia of their family. This allowed Goku to regain his senses and subsequently unlock Super Saiyan 4, after which he never utilized Golden Great Ape again.

Super Saiyan 4[]

Goku Super Saiyan 4

Super Saiyan 4.

This form appears in the anime only sequel Dragon Ball GT. After regaining his tail in a last-ditch effort to defeat Baby, Goku combined Super Saiyan and Great Ape together, creating the Golden Great Ape. However, like a regular Great Ape Goku lost his mind, nearly attacking his own friends and family. But fortunately, Pan, through words and memorabilia, brought Goku back to his senses. Goku then discovered that becoming a sane Golden Great Ape was the key to unlocking the much more powerful Super Saiyan 4. Super Saiyan 4 proves to be the strongest form gained by Goku in DBGT as it multiplies his power by 500x his normal state, suffers none of the drawbacks of Super Saiyan 3, none of the slowness being a Great Ape has and is powerful enough to negate Ultimate Shenron's wish and restores to him his adult body while using the form. As a Super Saiyan 4 Goku became able to take on incredibly powerful threats such as Baby Vegeta, Super 17, and the Shadow Dragons whose powers couldn't be matched with ordinary Super Saiyan transformations. As a Super Saiyan 4, he keeps his original hair though in a wilder style, his eyes turn golden yellow with a red pigmentation, and he gains scarlet fur over his entire body. For unknown reasons when he transforms into a Super Saiyan 4, Goku's clothes change in not just color but also style as well.

Super Saiyan God[]

This form of Goku appears in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods as well as Dragon Ball Super. This form easily surpasses all Super Saiyan forms seen before it's introduction though can only be obtained through a ritual involving 5 righteous Saiyans infusing their powers into a 6th Saiyan who undergoes the transformation. Goku transformed into this after getting energy from five other Saiyans who were Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten & Videl (who was pregnant with Goku's 1/4th Saiyan granddaughter). Goku used this form to take on Beerus who threatened to destroy Earth unless he got to fight the Super Saiyan God.

-Goku-Super-Saiyan-God-goku-37682285-500-310

Goku as a Super Saiyan God.

The power of this form is great enough to allow Goku to fight against the Beerus who had effortlessly defeated Super Saiyan 3 Goku as well as the other Z-Fighters and a fully powered Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta and was thought to be strong enough to defeat even a fusion of Goku and Vegeta. This form also allows Goku to sense and possess godly ki which can only be sensed by deities. As powerful as the form is, it, however, has drawbacks: it required some time for Goku to fully tap into its power and it drained his energy reserves fairly quickly, thus creating a time limit.

The sheer power of Goku and Beerus' fists colliding sent ripples throughout the universe with Old Kai commenting that just three punches could wipe out everything in the universe, leaving a void of nothingness. It also has regenerative abilities as Goku completely heal a deep wound in his stomach inflicted by Beerus. Though the form has a time limit the form's power can be retained if it was fully tapped into which Goku did unknowingly, keeping the power when he reverted to his super Saiyan form. which was empowered to just below this form's power.

When in this form, Goku's general appearance remains unchanged with the exception of a few slight differences: his skin tone becomes darker; the hair loses any stray hair, lifts up slightly and gains his Super Saiyan form bangs, as well as adopts a red coloring; his eyes grow, becoming sharper and the irises become red; the overall body structure appears to become younger, thinner, and somewhat taller; and the aura becomes more explosive and flame-like in appearance.

Super Saiyan Blue[]

This form made its debut in Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F. Originally it was called by the tongue-twister name Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan but was later renamed Super Saiyan Blue when Goku bit his tongue during an argument about the form and Whis suggested the form's new name. Goku gained this form following him keeping the power of Super Saiyan God after he lost the form and the following mastering that power while training under Whis, he became able to enter this form by simply turning Super Saiyan while using his Super Saiyan God power.

Tumblr nzmxx9ctyA1rd4ymxo1 500

Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue state.

This form surpasses all of Goku's Super Saiyan forms and is stronger than Super Saiyan God yet not strong enough to challenge Beerus alone but with aid from Vegeta in the same form, he is noted to be capable of potentially winning. Due to the calm mind and clear focus required for the form, it grants perfect innate Ki control which Goku makes use of when he combines it with his Kaio-Ken technique which he had been unable to safely do to its full potential with the original Super Saiyan Form. It does have a major flaw in stamina in that Goku can't transform back and forth as easily as the original Super Saiyan form so the form must be used wisely or else the power granted by the form will be considerably lessened.

It was originally gained during a sparring session with Vegeta but only as a brief glimpse and wasn't a full transformation. It was first seen in the battle against Golden Frieza who, while putting out more energy than Goku as a Super Saiyan Blue, possessed much less stamina and Goku's Super Saiyan Blue power outlasted his opponent's power.

When Goku uses the form, he is near identical to his Super Saiyan state only that the hair and irises are light blue in color and are slightly bigger; the overall body structure is thinner and somewhat taller, similar to Super Saiyan God. and boasts a vibrant, fiery, electric blue aura.

Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken[]

Goku overwhelms Hit with his Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken.

This form is a combination of Super Saiyan Blue and Kaio-ken. It boasts a double aura effect, placing a crimson Kaio-ken aura outside of a typical blue Super Saiyan Blue aura. The outer Kaio-ken aura manifests as violently fluctuating and jagged while the Super Saiyan Blue aura maintains a gentle, flame-like contour. When using the transformation to increase his power level by one order of magnitude (10x Kaio-ken), the energy aura is so intense that Goku's blue hair appears several shades lighter than normal, and his skin appears to be illuminated by the Kaio-ken's aura to a light shade of red. Additionally, the normally cyan-colored lightning effects of Super Saiyan Blue upon the user become almost pink in color.

Ebofm6ii5rgi3arau1ho

Goku moves faster than Hit cannot block.

Goku developed this technique for eventual use against Beerus. To use it, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan Blue, then simply activates Kaio-ken in addition to it. As Goku has not yet mastered the technique, it has only a 10% chance of working and a 90% of failing which would either damage his body or kill him Thus, Goku must maintain an extraordinary amount of focus when activating the technique in order to ensure its success. Since Super Saiyan Blue has perfect innate ki control, Goku is able to utilize the power of the Kaio-ken in a similar manner to the way in which he can control it in his base form. Use of this technique gifted Goku with such power that Hit's Time-Skip technique became useless, as Goku became so powerful that he could move despite time being frozen. This form was even able to make Beerus nervous even before Goku used it's multiplier abilities. Goku is only able to maintain Kaio-ken x10 as a Super Saiyan Blue for short periods of time because it puts a great deal of strain on his body. Currently, the max multiplier he has used is x10.

BriskDarlingHuia

The technique quickly nears its limits.

Due to the nature of the technique, Goku can be inflicted with serious body pains after ceasing it as well as even develop Delayed onset Ki Disorder which potentially could have completely destroyed his ki control and leave him unable to fight permanently.

However, Goku still continued to use the technique but only for brief periods when he needed an extra amount of power when in trouble though when fighting in the Tournament of Power he used the technique for increasingly longer periods. Eventually, Goku worked his multiplier up to 20x as shown when attempting to reach Jiren's level during the Tournament of Power though it was of little help.

Perfected Super Saiyan Blue[]

CompletedSSB

Goku as a Perfected Super Saiyan Blue.

In the manga, Super Saiyan Blue is revealed to only be able to grant its users the forms full potential during the first few minutes of transformation before dropping in strength. Goku overcame this stamina flaw by sealing the massive overflow of energy within his body, allowing himself to reach the full potential of his Super Saiyan Blue transformation with the only visual difference being the absence of an aura. The granted power of this form was great enough to allow Goku to not only combat Fused Zamasu but even have a slight advantage with his enemy only surviving because of his immortality. Despite the power increase, the form still possesses flaws in that Goku must continually keep his energy in check because even the slightest leakest of Ki could cause great harm to Goku and potentially become unstable and cause him to die.

Perfect Super Saiyan Blue (Power-Stressed)[]

Power Stressing Blue

Perfected Super Saiyan Blue (Power Stressed).

During the Tournament of Power, Goku attempted to surpass his limitations through brute force pushing his power as a Perfected Super Saiyan Blue via a method similar to the Kaio-Ken technique, with the end result being a Perfected Super Saiyan Blue with a jagged aura around his body. Unfortunately, not only did the power-up not majorly contribute to his fight with Jiren, but it also caused damage to Goku's body as the power-up conflicted with the energy-sealing method of Perfected Super Saiyan Blue.

Ultra Instinct Transformations[]

Ultra Instinct Sign[]

DBS110GokuUltraInstinct-720x405

Goku's Ultra Instinct.

An enlightened transformation attained by Goku during his battle with Jiren when he fell into the center of the Spirit Bomb as it exploded, absorbing the Spirit Bomb's energy into his body and breaking through one of his "shells", allowing him to tap into the deeper potential he possessed. In the manga, Ultra Instinct Sign is obtained as a result of Goku focusing on the lessons taught to him by his various teachers since he was a child and then combining them following Master Roshi's words of Martial Arts being more than simply strength and involves personal strength and letting go of self-doubt.

In this state, Goku's hair rises halfway between his normal and Super Saiyan hairstyle, his eyes become more defined and sterner with silver irises, and his aura becomes a complex mix of silvery sparkled aura. In this state, Goku's physical, mental, and spiritual strength is augmented to the extreme, enabling his body to dodge sub-consciously. It's obtained by having complete concentration in a fight, which allows him to be able to dodge without thinking. In this state, Goku's abilities are constantly evolving, becoming more efficient as he gets closer to his true potential while he gradually adapts to the form. Unfortunately, because entering this state requires Goku to be pushed to and past his absolute limit, it becomes more and more difficult to break his shell with each transformation, it is a very intensive and straining transformation. This leaves him unable to stay in Ultra Instinct Sign for too long, as the longer he uses it the more strained and exhausted his body will be after de-transforming. This incomplete version of Ultra Instinct also has a major flaw in that Goku's offense suffers due to him still having to think when he attacks.

Perfected Ultra Instinct[]

When fully synchronizing his defensive impulse with his natural drive for combat, Goku finally comes into the full power of Ultra Instinct and his full potential this results in him fully transforming by gaining silver hair and gaining a more ethereal skin tone.

Ultra Instint Mastered Goku

Goku's perfected Ultra Instinct.

In this state, Goku's power skyrockets to levels that made him far superior to all Gods of Destruction and comparably close to the realm known to the Angels, perhaps even already equal in power to one. In this state, Goku has complete control of his Energy to the point that he effortlessly repel and contain Jiren's energy attacks and his physical prowess was able to render Jiren nearly helpless to fight back. Unfortunately due to his mortal body and inexperience with the Autonomous Ultra Instinct, Goku can't hold it for longer than a few minutes as it burned through his stamina and eventually his body will give out with his own energy attacking him as the transformation fades away. Furthermore, Goku can not access this transformation willingly and only activates while in the direst of situations. However, after training with the former angel, Merus, Goku can now access this form at will.

True Ultra Instinct[]

This transformation is Goku's own version of Ultra Instinct Sign which is slightly enhanced. This form allows Goku to let his emotions free instead of having to be calm for it to work. He taps into his emotions and Saiyan roots and uses them to fuel his power even further.

Gokutui

Goku's true Ultra Instinct.

This form was first unlocked in Granolah the Survivor Saga, when Goku fights Awakened Gas. Goku transforms into True Ultra Instinct, confusing Gas. In Perfected Ultra Instinct, Goku could only use his power when he was calm and tranquil. True Ultra Instinct allowed Goku to run his emotions free which fueled his power even further. Goku and Gas engaged in a quick battle involving them exchanging blows before Gas throws a bunch of his weapons at Goku. Goku throws them back at Gas before sending a kick to Gas sending him flying.

Vegito[]

While fusing with Vegeta with a Potara earring, becoming the most powerful Vegito. Originally, believed to be a permanent fusion, however, separation occurred within the innards of Super Buu; initially seeming like Buu's own magic interrupting the fusion, in Super, it is revealed this fusion will last one hour, and is only permanent if one of the fusees is a god (although, a Dragon Ball wish can also undo it). The one hour time limit becomes shortened when transformations beyond Super Saiyan God are used, as energy burns out the spell. They only use the fusion as a last resort, and refuse it in the Tournament of Power due to risk of losing two fighters if the fusion is knocked out of the fight, but also their own Saiyan pride not wanting to do it.

Gogeta[]

While fusing with Vegeta by a fusion dance, Goku became the most powerful Gogeta. This fusion will last 30 minutes, though can be decreased through burning through energy.

Goku and Chi-Chi having their tender moment.

Chi-Chi: Goku and Chi-Chi have known each other since they were children and went on many adventures together until early adulthood. However, due to his naivete, Goku never understood the concept of romance or marriage and was completely oblivious to Chi-Chi's infatuation during their childhood. As they grew older, the two fought against one another in the tournament, in the end, Goku was finally able to reciprocate Chi Chi's feelings and they finally get married and had two sons together: Gohan and Goten. Chi-Chi once enjoyed the bouts with Goku, but after marriage, the former mountain-dweller shows an obsession in domestication. As a husband, Goku was never able to grasp her concept of getting a job and supporting their family; instead preferring to train and become stronger. In Super, Goku concedes to Chi-Chi's wishes to some degree and becomes a radish farmer. During his talk with Vegeta, Goku admits he loves Chi-Chi very much and he likes how strong-willed she is. When accidentally hit Chi-Chi due to his strength, Goku immediatedly patched his wife's injuries and apologies to her since he is not used to the gravity on Earth yet. Supposedly Chi-Chi and Goku have never kissed, although this claim could have been likely one of Goku's attempts to confuse Vegeta.

Relatives[]

  • Gohan: Gohan is Goku's eldest son. He named him after his adoptive grandfather. He was born with a tail like him. During his childhood, Chi-Chi refused to let Gohan train and become a martial artist like Goku and force him to study to become a scholar. Goku forsees Gohan has immense potential that could rival or surpass his own, although takes a long time to develop it, as Chi-Chi's insistence drove him indeed to be a scholar, but one whose strength falls far below even his teenage self; nevertheless, drastic situations can restore his power, when it is related to those he loves.
    GotenGokuMeetFirstTime

Goku and Goten sharing their father-son bond.

  • Goten: Goten is Goku's second-born son. Goku never met Goten until he was 7 years old during the Majin Buu Saga. When the two meet for the first time at the tournament Goten quickly embraces Goku and gives him a big hug and they play airplane for a little bit. During the Junior Division, Goku enjoys watching Goten fighting his opponents and making it to the finals to battle Trunks. Goku loves how strong his son has become and was also amazed that Goten becomes the youngest Super Saiyan. Later during the fight against Majin Buu, Goku becomes extremely protective of Goten when the evil wizard Babidi threatens him and insults him right in front of him. As Goku defends his son and warns Babidi to never insult him again or he will be sorry. After Kid Buu was defeated, Goku was brought back to life and happily moves back in with his family and will finally get to spend a lot of time with Goten and have lots of fun together as father and son.
  • Videl: Videl is Goku's daughter-in-law.
  • Pan: Pan is Goku's granddaughter. As a Saiyan, Goku can be forgetful about children, thus tends to forget about her. Although, upon reunions he remembers, and with their similar cheery dispositions, they get along really well.
  • Mr. Satan: Mr. Satan is Goku's friend and father of his daughter-in-law, Videl. Goku felt no ill will about Satan taking credit for Cell's defeat. While not judging him for his weakness, once it might have been a Fusion option, which caused Goku significant bafflement. Goku found great respect for Satan when he rallied the Earth to give energy for the Spirit Bomb that defeated Kid Buu.
  • Bardock : He is Goku's biological father and a low-class warrior who deeply cared about his family. Goku only knew his father as a toddler before being sent away to Earth, due to the head injury, Goku forgot about him. Unlike most Saiyans, he had a strong concept of honour, enjoying battle, but not with bloodlust like the rest. One of the few Saiyans to openly rebel against Frieza; bravely attempts to blast Frieza, but the tyrant's Death Ball annihilated him and the vast majority of the Saiyans with their planet.

Gine: She's Goku's mother. Like him she's gentle, purehearted and kind. In Dragon Ball Fusions, Gine is surprised to see her son as a young boy and calls him by his birth name. Kid Goku seems to vaguely sense he knows her from somewhere. Gine almost reveals herself to be his mother, but like her husband Bardock decides to keep it secret. Like most Saiyans, she perished in the destruction of Planet Vegeta.
  • Raditz: He is Goku's biological older brother and they don't have the best relation, him kidnapping Gohan and easily beaten his brother during their fight, going as far as crushing his ribs. They both met their demises by Goku holding onto him so Piccolo could preform the special beam cannon. After his death, he never appears again, nor is mentioned much.

Friends and Allies[]

  • Krillin: Goku and Krillin had a rocky start when they first met as children but quickly grew to become life-long friends, best friends and brothers-in-arms. Goku will always stand up for Krillin and defend him from others who hurt him. But when Krillin temporary gets killed by either Tambourine and later Frieza, Goku explodes with anger and vows to avenge him and make his best friend's killers pay. Goku and Krillin will always have each other's backs and be there for each other no matter what.
  • Numero 1

    Goku and Bulma.

Bulma: She's among Goku's first friends and they first met when Goku was a kid. At first she expressed frustration and annoyance towards his lack of hygiene, manners, and limited knowledge of the outside world and sought to only use him as protection whenever they encountered serious trouble when looking for the Dragon Balls. But soon, Bulma warmed up and cared for Goku as a dear friend, their relationship being akin to that of an older sister and younger brother. After a separation for a few years, upon seeing him as an adult for the first time, she found him quite attractive, though didn't pursue it due to their pre-existing sibling-like relationship.
  • Dragon-Ball-Super-Episode-123-0094

    Goku and Vegeta.

Vegeta: Goku and Vegeta had a bitter start when they first met as enemies in the Saiyan Saga, but all of that changed as they quickly grew to become partners, best friends and allies so they could fight various villains and other threats in order to protect Earth and the universe while they are usually on good terms, despite Vegeta having an on and off rivalry with Goku at first. Starting from the Buu Saga, Goku began a habit of teasing Vegeta, whether it be for his stubborn attitude, or his blunt nature, or when he shows a surprising side of sentimentality towards his family.
  • Tien Shinhan : Fought as a representative of a rival martial arts school, believing Roshi had wronged them but seeing through the lies and flaws of his school, changed to Master Roshi, becoming Goku's friend.
  • Yamcha : Once a desert bandit, but befriended by Goku and friends. Dated Bulma briefly.
  • Trunks: They don't seem to interact, though Trunks knows him as his best friend, Goten's dad.
  • Future Trunks: A great admirer of Goku, who provided a cure that only exists in the future to a heart disease that would have killed Goku. He bonds with his father, who was dead in his timeline. At first, was assisting in the threat of the androids, ending with Cell; returned to the alternate past to ask for help from Goku and Vegeta, as a new, far more powerful threat, had appeared.
  • Goku and Android 18

    Goku and Android 18.

Android 18: 18, 16 and 17 were originally programmed to kill Goku, but didn't do it after Gohan and the Z-Fighters defeated Cell and saved them. Although, like her brother, 18, wasn't really interested in fulfilling Gero's revenge. When Goku came back 7 years later, 18 and him didn't interact that much. Goku was also shocked when he learned that 18 could have a baby.
  • Android 17: They never met before he was absorbed by Cell. Not meeting directly until decades later, when 17 is working as a park ranger, and he is needed for the Tournament of Power. Despite being made to kill Goku, he never had any interest in fulfilling Gero's mission. He did ask to spar when they finally met as to satisfy his curiosity.
  • Android 16: Unknown to the Z Fighters, was based upon Dr. Gero's late son, Geno, and as such was programmed with pacifism. Nevertheless, was the strongest android Gero built, though was dwarfed by Perfect Cell. Has an appreciation for nature and wildlife.
  • Android 21: Gokue gets along well with her good side, but her evil side, which fissions into another person, he finds difficult because of her desire to destroy him seeming like either hunger or desire.
  • Android 8: A friendly, kind-hearted creation that doesn't want to hurt innocent people, thereby defects from the Red Ribbon Army.
  • Piccolo Goku and Piccolo started out as enemies, but when Raditz kidnap Gohan, the two team up to save him. The two later became allies though Piccolo would sometimes chew Goku for stubborn and reckless decisions.
  • King Kai: A portly deity who has a terrible sense of humour. Highly skilled martial arts trainer, and has galaxy-spanning telepathy that helps in many battles.
  • Shin: Recruited Goku and Z Fighters to battle the threat of Babidi's plan of reviving Majin Buu. He is frequently shocked at the power of Goku and friends, though eventually becomes accustomed to it.
  • Whis: Goku understands the power of the angel, but struggles to take him seriously due to his appearance and mannerisms. However, he respects his skills, and finds his training useful.
  • Master Roshi: Goku's first martial arts teacher. His unorthodox training begin his path to untold heights. He is incredibly perverted, and while strong, is weak to thus easily stoppable by women who are disgusted by him. He created the Kamehameha, which became one of Goku's most iconic moves.
  • Zeno: The most dangerous entity in existence. Supposedly creator of the multiverse. Has a child-like personality that is appealed to by Goku. Somewhat akin to a spoilt brat, as if he doesn't get his way, he can throw a tantrum, but his tantrums destroy universes.
  • Launch: A young woman with an unique ailment, as she has two personalities, like Jekyll and Hyde. One being a very sweet docile girl, the other a violent criminal who fires a machinegun when bothered; both fancy Tien. While a main member of the group, vanishes after Dragon Ball, although her docile persona reappears for a few seconds in DBZ
  • Mai: A hapless minion of Emperor Pilaf, whose castle was destroyed when Goku turned into a Great Ape. She is the smartest of Pilaf's team, but clumsy, and still obeys no matter how bad the plan. She, Shu, and Pilaf are de-aged by a poorly thought out Dragon Ball wish. Pilaf's team, out of fear, join the staff of Capsule Corporations; despite a few "world domination" schemes, they gradually become genuine members of the team. Trunks has a crush on her.
  • Future Mai: Unlike her present day self, she is fearless and compassionate. She hasn't been jaded despite living through two apocalypes. There is a spark of something between her and Future Trunks.
  • Goku-vs-Caulifla-Super-Saiyan-2-1

    Goku and Caulifla.

Caulifla: At first start, Caulifla and Goku initially got off to a rocky start, with her showing Gokū no respect, even though the latter believes she is a lot like he is. however, Caulifla's attitude towards Gokū would seems to change, as when she asked him to teach her how to become a Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan 3 and she would become the closest thing to a student Goku has had since his two sons. She was eager & exicted to learn more from Goku once he showed her just how strong he was, especially even during at The Tournament Of Power as Goku is the 7th Universe's Strongest Saiyan Fighter. Caulifla has seems to consider him as an worthy good opponent in their first battle as Super Saiyan 2s and in their second battle rematch as Super Saiyan 2s with Goku helping and teach her reach to the next higher level, Super Saiyan 3, wanting to get stronger and stronger as she can like him.
    Goku and Kale

    Goku and Kale.

Kale: Despite Goku friendliness towards her and Caulifla, Kale shys away excaliming that she doesn't like him. She grew to resent him for "taking her big sis away from her" to the point of unleashing her Legendary Super Saiyan form to mindlessly manhandle the older Saiyan. Later in the Tournament, Kale seems to tolerate Goku. Her attitude towards Goku after he and Caulifla invite her join in their fight which she happily agrees and does so.
  • Cabba
  • Vados: Is amused by Goku and Universe 7.
  • Good Buu: Goku was the first person to react to Buu without fear or hatred. While they aren't close, they generally get along. Goku respects Good Buu for his assistance in defeating his pure evil counterpart, Kid Buu.
  • Dende: He is recruited from Namek to be the new Guardian of Earth, thus reawakening the Dragon Balls. As a child, he was very timid and fretful, but as he grew up, he felt comfortable in the role.
  • Mr. Popo: Loyal attendent to Guardian of Earth.

Neutral[]

  • Beerus: A God of Destruction, an immortal being that destroys planets when revitalisation is needed for the flow of creation. Provokes Goku's next new ascension into Super Saiyan God as to satisfy his own curiosity. He is lethargic and gluttonous, claiming to allow the Earth's existence because he likes the food. While Frieza had his own motive, evidently Beerus ordered him to blow up Planet Vegeta due to believing that Saiyans would upset the balance of the universe.
  • Hit: Stoic and professional assassin. Despite meeting as enemies, grew to admire Goku.
  • Jiren
  • Toppo
  • Broly: Raised on a desolate planet by his father, Paragus, which they forced to flee to, as infant Broly's power level unnerved King Vegeta. Lack of socialisation and education makes him exceptionally awkward and ignorant of technology and other cultures. Despite being emotionally abused by his father, he still loves him, thus is obedient to his commands.

Enemies[]

  • Frieza: Goku's arch-nemesis and foil being the most recurring foe Goku has faced who had two new power ups to keep up with him. Suffers two deaths, but is restored to life as a reward for helping in the Tournament of Power. He continues to increase his power, with new forms, to maintain his galactic empire and to prepare to once again seek revenge against Goku.
  • Turles: Goku's polar doubleganger, representing what Goku would have become if he never hit his head, a sadistic warrior.
  • Lord Slug: A evil Namekian. Part of a tribe of outcasts due to malicious attitudes.
  • Zamasu/Goku Black: Goku's greatest and most hated enemy. Two versions of the same god, one having stolen Goku's body, and the other used a wish to be invulnerable. They are narcissistic megalomaniacs who despise mortal life, seeking to erase it all, but also killing gods that get in their way.
  • Cell: A bio-android who is one of Goku's most dangerous enemies, made from the genetic material of his most dangerous enemies and allies alike.
  • Dr. Gero: The creator of the androids, including Cell. Never met Goku directly, rather under the guise of Android 20; he holds a grudge for Goku's destruction of the Red Ribbon Army, which included Gero's son.
  • Android 19: Due to Goku's heart virus, he ended up at the mercy of the emotionally limited but hateful android.
  • Red Ribbon Army- Goku's first major villain organization.
  • Babidi - Evil socerer. Most people don't take him seriously due to his diminuitive size. While physically weak, has a mastery of spells that can brainwash or boost the strength of a minion, plus knows the spell to unleash or imprison Majin Buu, which kept him obedient for a time.
  • Majin Buu*(Evil/Super/Kid) - 3rd archenemy. Evil lacked any emotions and only sought to murder, as well as absorb his good half. Super is impatient, sadistic, childish, has a cruel sense of humour, enjoys candies like his good side, and despite being a brute, has surprisingly cunning mind. Kid is even more childish, more sadistic, perceptive, mostly non-verbal, psychotic disregard for all life and even his own safety, not typically being bothered by pain due to his instant regeneration.
  • Ginyu Force: A team consisting of Frieza's best warriors. Highly flamboyant.
  • Nappa: Another Saiyan who served as Vegeta's attendent. Bad tempered, but fearful of and loyal to Vegeta, thus shocked at the betrayal.
  • Cooler: Frieza's older brother, initially wanting to avenge his brother on principle, rather than actual concern; after his defeat, he is absorbed into a moon-sized space station called the Big Ghette Star, which consumes planets for energy.
  • Dr. Wheelo: Mad scientist who was forced to put his brain in a powered mech suit. Wanted the world's strongest body, thinking it was Roshi, but learns it is Goku, thus attempts to steal it.
  • Android 13: Unlike Gero's 16, 17, and 18, 13 was obedient and enthusiastic about killing Goku.
  • Garlic Jr.: Garlic's mission to kill Kami made him an enemy to Goku and friends. Goku was unable to defeat him, but Gohan's hidden powers compelled him to knock Garlic into the Dead Zone, a prison dimension.
  • Paragus (Original/2019): Original Paragus was a loyal soldier to King Vegeta, but upon the King's decree to murder Paragus' son, Broly, the father attempted to reason with the king, only to be wounded and left for dead with his stabbed son. Infant Broly's latent power saved them both from Planet Vegeta's destruction, leaving Paragus to plot revenge on King Vegeta's living heir, Vegeta. The 2019 Paragus has a similar background, in that King Vegeta feared the potential of his infant son, Broly; however, Paragus manages to take Broly and they escape without harm, thus are spared the destruction of Planet Vegeta. Paragus raised his son in exile; while he was exploitative like the original version, the new version seemed to genuinely love Broly.
  • Broly (Original): Kept in the same nursery as Kakarot/Goku, the latter's wailing disturbed infant Broly; when he was stabbed on King Vegeta's orders, he was left to rot with his wounded father, Paragus, in the trash. The danger of Frieza's Death Ball awoke Broly's latent powers, saving himself and his father. The three traumatic events became conflated, driving Broly to hold an irrational hatred of Goku. His own immense powers also twisted his mind further, and Paragus' mind control device similarly warped him, until he was a dangerous psychotic with sadistic tendencies, lacking any concern for anyone.
  • Bojack: As Goku was dead at the time, he doesn't directly meet him, though the space pirate was aware of him and cruelly grateful for Goku's unintentional freeing of him. Goku breaks the rules of reality to teleport to Earth to punch Bojack, to save Gohan; Goku coaches Gohan, helping his reaccomplish his Super Saiyan 2 form, thus allowing him to defeat Bojack and his men.
  • Janempa/Janemba: The first form was childlike and playful, and while big as a building, whose corpulent, unthreatening appearance made Goku think he was kind of cute; however, understanding the creature's powers and madness made it dangerous, Goku unleashes his full strength to destroy it. Yet instead causing the creature to mutate into a human-sized and more malicious form, which had even greater powers. Goku and Vegeta needed to fuse to defeat it.
  • Hirudegarn: A kaiju-sized demon, more akin to a natural disaster than living thing.
  • Moro: The Planet Eater. Able to inspire a following, but is disloyal to them, consuming them for his own strength.
  • The Heeters-a group of criminals, who were once bested by Bardock.
  • King Piccolo: Goku's first true arch-nemesis and victim.
  • Tao Pai Pai: A legendary mercenary who assassinated General Blue.
  • Frost: A Frieza-lookalike from another universe who at first seemed like a charitable hero, but was actually also a Galactic conqueror.
  • Captain Ginyu: The leader of the Ginyu force; had a technique that allowed hom to briefly steal Goku's body, until Goku and his friends help him get switched back. Ginyu remains loyal to Frieza so that even after decades as a frog, he tricks someone into swapping their more suitable warrior body to him, so that he could serve the tyrant Emperor again.
  • Tambourine: One of Goku's most hated enemies since he killed Krillin.
  • Baby: The first major villain in GT only. An artificial Tuffle, which were the people wiped out by Saiyans, albeit before the time of Goku and Vegeta.
  • Syn Shenron/Omega Shenron: The last of the Shadow Dragons & Goku's most powerful opponent; like Frieza, seems to hold contempt for Saiyans (GT only).

Trivia[]

  • Not only is Goku loosely based on Sun Wukong, the main protagonist in the Chinese legend Journey to the West, but their names are in a way, exactly the same; Son Goku (孫悟空) is a Buddhist name that means “The Child Aware of Emptiness” or "Grandson that Perceives Air" and comes from his character development based on Sun Wukong (in Chinese and Japanese: 孫悟空; Sūn means "grandchild" in both languages and implies his origin as a monkey, and Wùkōng means "Aware of Emptiness"). The Wu syllable means "Enlightenment", and the Kong syllable means "Sky, Air or Emptiness". Sun (孫) is also a common Chinese surname. From there, the name Son Goku is simply the name Sun Wukong converted into the Japanese on'yomi reading, albeit even with the same exact Asian characters used between both "Wukongs/Gokus" (孫 悟空), due to the similar writing systems both Chinese and Japanese happen to share with hanzi/kanji.
    • The Dragon Ball universe began as a loose adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, with Goku starting off as more or less a parody of Sun Wukong the Monkey King. Similarities between the two include Goku's prone for mischief as a child (due to his innocence), possession of Nyoibo (Sun Wukong's staff that can fill the entire universe), and Flying Nimbus (the magical cloud the monkey rode on in Journey to the West). As the Dragon Ball manga continued its run, he was able to develop differently, eventually turning out to have similar origins, while still retaining the very same name as his source material.
      • Through this, there have been many other characters named after the Japanese reading of Sun Wukong; The Four Tailed Beast in Naruto Shippūden is called Son Gokū in the same vein as one example of many.
    • In romaji/kana, it often varies on how the "kū" part is written; some sources may write the name as "Son Gokuu" with an extra "u" (to match the furigana) or with an overline; however in the Namek Saga, while training in the Capsule Corporation spaceship, it is seen that his name is written with an "h" in the place of the long vowel (as Gokuh) when he has to go to repair the ship. Most of Toriyama's personal sources often romanize the kana reading of his name that way. Meanwhile, certain toy-based production lines instead romanize it as "Gokou" instead (to model it after "cou"), though doing it as such would incorrectly make the name be read as "Go-koh" instead of "Go-koo".
  • Goku's real name, Kakarot, is a pun on "carrot". Likewise, all pure-blood Saiyans that appear in the series are named using vegetable-related puns. Goku's family are all named after root vegetables (burdock, negi, radish, and carrot). Comically, in Dragon Ball, Goku says he hates carrots when fighting against Monster Carrot.
  • Goku's FUNimation English voice actor, Sean Schemmel also voices Nail, King Kai, and Mr. Popo while Kid Goku's FUNimation English voice actress, Stephanie Nadolny voices Kid Gohan and KO while his second FUNimation English voice actress, Colleen Clinkenbeard voices Kid Gohan in the FUNimation dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai.
  • Goku's outfit in Dragon Ball GT resembles his original outfit from the beginning of Dragon Ball, but with gold pants and pink wristbands.
  • Goku is chronologically 43 at the time of the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super; however, he is actually only 35 physically due to being dead a collective 8 years and resurrected twice. Meaning he would be 45 - 46 during Dragon Ball GT instead of 53 - 54.
  • The author of the franchise, Akira Toriyama's passing on march 1 of 2024 has became a world wide news, having Goku being displayed across medias, celebrities, and countries to commemorate Akira's death, including Archie Comics, The Smurfs franchise, BBC News, and Emmanuel Macron paying homage to him on social medias.
