Hero Overview

Intelligence is not a gift, it’s a privilege and you use it for the good of mankind.
~ Doctor Octopus to Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2.

Dr. Otto Octavius, later known as Doctor Octopus, is the main antagonist of the 2004 superhero film Spider-Man 2 and a major character in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

He is a scientist and friend of Peter Parker who later became possessed by his own malevolent mechanical arms after an experiment with his fusion reactor funded by Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn, went horribly wrong. From then onwards, Otto turned into a dangerous supervillain. When he was transported to Earth-199999, that universe's Spider-Man helped release him from the corrosive AI of his tentacles. Indebted, Otto helped him, his native Spider-Man, and another alternate Spider-Man in their fight against the Green Goblin and the uncured villains on Liberty Island.

He is portrayed by Alfred Molina who also voice Viggo Grimborn in Dragons: Race to the Edge.

Film[]

Early life[]

Doctor Otto Gunther Octavius is a renowned scientist from New York City, United States of America. During his college days as a science student, Otto befriended Dr. Curtis "Curt" Connors and fell in love with a woman called Rosalie, who studied English Literature back then. They would eventually marry, with Rosalie becoming his lab assistant. At some point during his career, Otto went to meet Oscorp CEO Norman Osborn, whom he formed a business relationship. However, Otto felt that deep inside, Osborn was greedy and misguided, but did see some goodness within him as he even came to know his son, Harry Osborn. Eventually, Osborn died and Otto was one of the many attendees to his funeral. Unknown to many, Otto connected the dots and deduced that Norman was the Green Goblin.

Throughout his life, Otto had always dreamed to control the enormous power of the sun through a fusion reactor. To do so, Otto partnered with Norman's son Harry, who had inherited Oscorp, to be funded and get a portion of trillium for the experiment. Not only that, but Otto also created four mechanical appendages resembleing octopus tentacles to assist him in the experiment, and to prevent their A.I. from taking his mind over, Otto also designed a neural inhibitor chip to prevent such scenario.

Spider-Man 2[]

Otto Octavius first appears when Harry takes his friend Peter Parker to meet him in order for Parker to not fail Connors' class (which he hasn't been missing thanks to his secret activites as Spider-Man). Otto quickly gets along with Peter and assures him that his main reason for his experiment is that intelligence isn't a privilege but a gift that must be used for humanity's welfare. Peter drinks coffee with the Octaviuses and gathers the information he needs for his college assignment, in addition to Otto suggesting him as well that he should romance his crush Mary Jane Watson with poetry like he did with Rosalie.

Some days later, Harry brings his business partners and some reporters, Parker included, to Otto's lab for the fusion reactor's presentation. Otto attaches his appendages to his spine, calms down the reporters concerned for his safety and proceeds to start the experiment by putting the trillium inside the reactor, thanking Harry for his backing. Suddently, the experiment goes wrong and the fusion reactor starts to drag all metals into it, getting destabilized. However, Otto refuses to shut down the reactor despite Harry's orders, even swatting Spider-Man when he tries to turn it off, but eventually, the reactor drags glass pieces that kill Rosalie, leading a distraught Otto to yell for his wife and get electrocuted. This fries his inhibitor chip and allows the A.I. within his tentacles to take over his mind while Spidey turns the reactor off and Otto is taken to Midtown Hospital.

Once at the hospital, a team of surgeons try to remove the tentacles with buzzsaws as Otto sleeps, but the tentacles soon rebel and kill most of the surgeons in self-defense. Upon waking up, Otto can't believe what he has done and yells in desperation. He quickly escapes from the premises and goes to New York City's docks, where he intends to drown himself for causing the deaths of his wife and the surgeons, but that's when the tentacles influence him and persuade him that he isn't at fault but must instead finish the fusion reactor that Spider-Man "sabotaged". That's the point in which Otto Octavius stops being himself and becomes Doctor Octopus, setting into motion most of the events of the film, which involve Doc Ock trying to make a new fusion reactor at his warehouse laboratory in East River that could destroy all of New York City.

Towards the end of the film, Otto Octavius finally comes back to his senses when Spider-Man faces Doctor Octopus and stuns him with an electrical shock. Taking a chance, Spider-Man reveals his identity as Peter Parker to convince Otto to shut down the reactor. Otto doesn't back off and tries to strangle him with his tentacles, but Peter appeals to his better nature and reminds him of what he told him that humans should do with their intelligences and that sometimes people have to sacrifice their dreams just like his Aunt May told him. Realizing that Peter's right, Otto forces his weakened tentacles to obey him and sacrifices himself to save NYC by drowning the fusion reactor into the East River. The city and their citizens are saved, and while Peter and Mary Jane (who had been kidnapped by Doc Ock beforehand) escape, Otto slowly sinks with his tentacles and drowns in the process, giving up his life for the greater good.

Spider-Man: No Way Home[]

When a failed spell by Doctor Strange connected to the multiverse, Doctor Octopus was brought back to life with no memory of dying because the last thing he remembers was strangling his Peter Parker. Upon arriving in the MCU universe, Otto Octavius was still going by Doctor Octopus and his tentacles still influence him, leading him to destroy part of the Alexander Hamilton Bridge by destroying some cars there. Coincidentally, this is where this universe's Peter Parker was trying to convince the MIT vice chancellor to let his friends Ned Leeds and Michelle Jones to attend MIT. Mistaking him for his Peter Parker, Doctor Octopus engages him in a battle, but Spider-Man manages to restrain him when his tentacles abosrd the Stark Industries nanotechnology his suit has, leading the tentacles to turn against Doc Ock and making Parker earn the MIT vice chancellor's gratitude before being Peter and Otto are transported to the New York Sanctum by Strange, who informs Parker that thanks to the spell's botching, now they have to retrieve all multiversal travelers that have ended up at their universe.

However, after retrieving the Green Goblin, Sandman, the Lizard and Electro, Peter has a change of heart and pleads Strange to save all the villains instead of sending them back to die through the Macchina di Kadavus. Strange refuses so Peter and him get in a fight in the Mirror Dimention which Spidey wins, leaving Strange stranded in the dimension's Grand Canyon. Doctor Octopus refuses to be cured, but Spider-Man nonetheless forces him into accompanying them to a friend of his and his Aunt May's apartment. Once there, Peter and Norman (as the Green Goblin is currently repressed by him) design a new inhibitor chip and insert it into Doctor Octopus' spine despite his protests. This finally represses the influence of the tentacles for good and allows Otto Octavius to resurface for good. Unfortunately, the Green Goblin takes Norman's mind over again and proceeds to incite the other villains to escape and embrace their "gifts" instead of being cured from their "godhood", leading Doctor Octopus to escape while Spider-Man and the Goblin fight.

Later on, Otto returns during the final battle at the Statue of Liberty (presumably taking a boat to get there), in which Spider-Man, alongside Otto's own Spidey and an alternate one engage in a fight against Sandman, Electro and the Lizard, whom they want to cure. At first, it looks like Doc Ock is back again and tries to assist Electro in killing his Spider-Man, but instead, uses a Stark Arc Reactor to deprive Electro from his powers, restoring him back to Max Dillon. Shortly afterwards, Otto takes the Stark Reactor and ponders on how he now has the power of the sun in the palm of his hand. It's then that Otto comes across his Peter Parker again and they have a heartwarming reunion, with Otto expressing a happy surprise at how Peter has grown up since their last meeting.

After curing the other villains, the three Spider-Men reunite with Doctor Strange, but then the Green Goblin ambushes them and tries to take the Macchina di Kadavus for himself. Octavius uses his tentacles to grab the Green Goblin's glider while Strange takes the Macchina back, but the Goblin cuts off one of Otto's tentacles and destroys the Macchina due to having placed one of his Pumpkin Bombs inside it beforehand. Everyone survives the destruction and Otto later sees how this universe's Peter Parker purges the Goblin out of Norman's mind before Strange returns every multiversal visitor back to their home universe. Otto departs from Earth-199999 with the Stark Arc Reactor and fades away back to his own universe. It can be presumed that now Otto can achieve his dream of providing the world with an infinite fusion-based source of energy through efficient and safer means, in addition to possibly find a way to remove the tentacles from his spine if he wishes to.

Spider-Man 2 novelization[]

Octavius, when asked by Hank Pym about whether or not his tentacles could control Octavius, stated that he made an inhibitor chip to prevent his tentacles from controlling him or affecting his mind. Otto then started his fusion reactor. It eventually destabilized and Otto was electrocuted, causing his inhibitor chip to be destroyed. His wife Rosie was also killed in the incident. When Otto was brought to the hospital, his tentacles noticed the doctors attempting to slice them off. They ask their "father" if they may attack them, to which Otto unconsciously does. The tentacles brutally massacre the surgeons. Reacting to Otto's sensitivity to light after the fusion reactor damaged his vision, they give him sunglasses. They barge out the hospital and throw a car, landing it upside down. They reach a nearby clothes store and destroy the glass to steal a coat they sensed Doc-Ock liked, lifting him to avoid him getting glass shards in his feet. They hear sirens and were willing to destroy the police, leading to Otto telling them to escape to a ruined peer.

Upon entering the peer, rats disgust Otto, leading to the tentacles to kill them. Otto tries to sleep in vain as he keeps thinking of Rosie, the tentacles tell Otto that Rosie's death wasn't his fault and after Otto realizes his chip is gone, the tentacles tell Otto that it came between Otto and themselves. The tentacles try to convince Otto into rebuilding the reactor. When Otto tells them that Peter was right about the energy spikes, the tentacles manipulate him with his ego, saying how he is the great Octavius, he couldn't have miscalculated and that Spider-Man was the cause of the machine failing. They tell Otto that Spider-Man didn't want Otto stealing the spotlight. And they convince Otto to do whatever is necessary to rebuild the reactor. When Otto tells the tentacles that stealing would make him a criminal, the tentacles tell him that acts that some would call wrong are done for a great cause is what history is filled with. Finally convinced Otto, decides to rob a bank to attain money.

When Otto robs the bank, he tells Spider-Man how furious he is that Spider-Man is interfering with his life again, telling him what the tentacles told him. Spider-Man tells Otto that his experiment was the cause of Rosie's death. Otto for a moment becomes convinced Spider-Man is right before the tentacles manipulate Otto once more. Otto, escapes with his gold coins, $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coins from a sunken ship near 100 years old. Otto kidnaps Aunt May and attempts to kill her, reasoning that it would be better to die a quick painless death rather than a slow painful death by old age or disease. Otto is stopped by Spider-Man from killing Aunt May but still gets away with his money.

Otto and his tentacles rob numerous government tech that was guarded by the military, who were attacked by Otto and his tentacles. Otto and his tentacles set up the government equipment by leaching on a power main which would take the electric company months to discover. It's revealed that Otto stole candy bars, corn chips and newspapers from a near blind man in a neighborhood that police rarely drove by. Eating such things reminded Otto of his college life where he ate such things, in that time, he made his first greatest ideas. It's implied the tentacles did this to boost his motivation for finishing the reactor. When reading a newspaper about Spider-Man not being around anymore, Otto is furious that the headline took precedence over him and that Jameson was most likely making it up as there was no proof Spider-Man died.

Otto goes to Harry Osborn's house. When they converse of Spider-Man being gone, Ock, his tentacles and Harry disagree with Jameson's headlines and Harry makes Ock deliver Spider-Man to him in exchange for tritium. Harry suggests making Peter tell Otto where Spider-Man was, Ock finds Peter by plugging his tentacles into the fiber optics of the city. Once at the café with Mary Jane, Peter senses a car coming at him and saves Mary Jane and a nurse from it. Ock demands Peter bring Spider-Man to a clock tower at 3 o'clock before throwing Peter into the café wall causing debris to fall on him. Peter, having regained his strength, goes to the clothes shop where Ock got his coat and gets a mask from there. Upon being masked, Peter steals his costume back from Jameson with Peter feeling like Tom Sawyer the whole time as Jameson was admitting that Spider-Man was a hero. Spider-Man and Ock face each other at the clock tower. Eventually they fall onto a train where Doc Ock destroys the console, leaving Spider-Man to get brutally beat up stopping it.

With Spider-Man weak after the train incident, Ock hands him to Harry, who wanted to kill him but couldn't accept his best friend was the murderer of his father. Ock with his tritium starts the machine, completely ignoring Mary Jane. However, the tentacles snapped at her with what seemed to be jealousy. The tentacles see Spider-Man and warn Ock. After a fight, Ock attempts to stab Spider-Man with his tentacles, Spider-Man webs up a cable and the tentacle stabs it, leading Ock to be electrocuted and sent out of his trance. The tentacles demand to be saved by Ock who is confused of who is demanding to be saved. Ock demands his tentacles tell him what they have done to him, to which the tentacles call him ungrateful and a sniveling coward who should go to hell. Spider-Man goes to Ock, who looks at his fusion reactor and pieces everything that has happened recently together and is happy that his fusion reactor is working. Spider-Man tells Otto to shut it down due to its potential to destroy New York, Otto rose shouting that he won't.

The tentacles rose with Ock's voice and attempted to strangle Spider-Man. Peter eventually tells Otto that his dream didn't work and he should abandon it. Otto finally realizing his mistakes, tells his tentacles to obey him while ripping off their appendages. Thanks to the electric shock, the appendages had mostly come off. Otto tells Peter that the only way to stop the reactor is by drowning it, but whoever does it risks death as the reactor hitting the water would superheat the water and cause anyone to be cooked to death. Spider-Man initially tries but Otto grabs him with a tentacle and tells Peter that he himself will do it. The tentacles ask Ock "Father... must we do this?", to which Otto replies "Yes. And no back talk. You've misbehaved and done great evil. But so have I. And we will do our penance together". The tentacles make the reactor go into the water while Octavius embraces his reactor going into the water and burning to death with it. The tentacles tell Otto one last thing "Father! We are frightened! Hold us!". But Otto died and they were going to as well.

Personality[]

Intelligence is not a privilege, it's a gift, and you use it for the good of mankind.
~ Dr. Octavius' motto to Peter Parker before his transformation into "Doctor Octopus".

Otto is a dedicated man as he uses his intelligence for the good of mankind and wanted to show everyone that science can be use for noble intentions. Also, Otto cares about those around him and would help in anyway he could. However, despite his good heart, Otto lets his work consume his time, except for Rosie, as he doesn't rarely take care of his needs. When he fell under the control of his tentacles and became Doctor Octopus, Otto became the opposite of what he is but some of his traits were still in there, as he didn't want to kill anyone unless he had too. Although, through Spider-Man/Peter Parkers help, Otto used his willpower to regain control of his mind from his tentacles and risked his life to stop his actions.

Upon being transported to an alternate dimension prior to his death as well as his redemption, Otto was still under his tentacles control and had his Doctor Octopus personality as he clashed with this universe's Spider-Man. However, after the MCU Spider-Man permanently cured him of this state, Otto's old personality returned as he returned the nanites that he ripped off of the Iron Spider armor back to the latter. Also, Otto offered his aid to the MCU Spider-Man and Norman Osborn in developing cures for the other villains, the latter of which he refused to do as Doctor Octopus. He even helps the Spider-Men fight the villains on the Statue of Liberty and prevents Electro from falling to his death after the scaffolding collapsed because of the Goblin's pumpkin bombs. During this time, Otto was reunited with his Peter Parker and was happy to see his old friend. He also appeared to be fascinated by the Arc Reactor, a device that was essentially what Otto had been attempting to create with his own failed fusion reactor.
