Captain Toad is a major character in the Super Mario franchise and the titular main protagonist of the 2014 action puzzle game Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
Initially introduced as the bumbling, inept leader of the Toad Brigade, Captain Toad has gradually evolved into a genuinely competent adventurer and one of Mario's most recurring allies. Despite still being somewhat cowardly and often getting himself lost, Captain Toad is nevertheless able to find treasure, solve puzzles, and explore obscure areas to the point that his adventuring skills rival those of Mario and Luigi themselves.
Appearance[]
Captain Toad is a Toad with red spots on his head. He dons a hiking outfit, a red bandana on his neck, a large brown backpack containing a map, and a headlight strapped to his head.

Despite being the leader of the Toad Brigade organization, Captain Toad is cowardly and a bit lazy. His cowardice often leads to his fellow Toad Brigade members sometimes talk negatively about the Captain behind his back. However he is loyal to his allies and tries to provide them as much help as he can. Captain Toad is also adventurous as he is usually seen camping in various locations while in search for treasure. Later games, particularly his own game, showing him being much braver as he willingly traverses dangerous territories and battles enemies to rescue his friends and collect treasure. Despite being finished with his quest, when he sees a Green Star (or the Odyssey in the Nintendo 3DS and Switch versions) he immediately begins following it, ready for another adventure.
Biography[]
Super Mario Galaxy[]
Captain Toad is introduced as the self-proclaimed and overconfident leader of the Toad Brigade, who escaped from Bowser's invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom alongside the other brigadiers and Luigi. However, the crew got lost in space and became separated from Luigi.
The Toad Brigade are found stuck on top of a tree in Honeyhive Galaxy, where they are rescued by Mario. Thankful for Mario's help, Captain Toad gives him a Power Star.
From then on, the Toad Brigade board the Comet Observatory, with Captain Toad promising to help Mario find more power stars for Rosalina in order to reach the center of the universe and rescue Peach. For the rest of the game, Captain Toad repeatedly leads the Toad Brigade into dangerous situations while searching for Power Stars, causing Mario to have to come and rescue them. At one point, Captain Toad even accidentally locks himself inside a treasure chest and has to wait for Mario to free him before suffocating, at which point he rewards Mario with another Power Star.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Captain Toad and the Toad Brigade return, once again helping Mario and Luigi find Power Stars, this time to upgrade Lubba's Starship Mario in order to reach Bowser's Galaxy Generator.
Captain Toad first appears in Spin-Dig Galaxy while searching for the kidnapped Princess Peach, where he warns Mario of a giant robot on a nearby planet. After their encounter, Captain Toad and the Toad Brigade follow Starship Mario in their own ship, the Starshroom, to help search for Power Stars. Once again, Captain Toad finds himself locked inside a treasure chest, this time in Slimy Spring Galaxy, resulting in Mario having to save him.
Super Mario 3D World[]
Captain Toad appears in numerous bonus levels throughout the Sprixie Kingdom in Super Mario 3D World, where he collects Green Stars in order to help Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Blue Toad reach World Bowser and save the Sprixie Princesses. Occasionally, Captain Toad will appear in the regular levels, usually being chased by some sort of enemy or trapped in a hidden area. When saved, he rewards the player with a Green Star as a show of gratitude.
He reappears in World Crown, the final post-game world, in the level "Captain Toad's Fiery Finale", where he undergoes a challenging, lava-filled gauntlet in order to find the game's few remaining Green Stars and open up "Champion's Road".
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]
Set before the events of Super Mario Odyssey (although before the events of 3D World in the original Wii U release), Captain Toad explores the world in search of Power Stars while being harassed by his archenemy, a giant, thieving bird named Wingo. However, Wingo soon kidnaps Captain Toad's partner, Toadette, resulting in Captain Toad having to collect Power Stars and pursue Wingo in order to rescue her.
Captain Toad defeats Wingo and saves Toadette. However, when the two find another Power Star, Wingo reappears and kidnaps Captain Toad instead. Toadette goes on her own journey to rescue him, only to be recaptured by Wingo while the Captain is thrown far away.
Eventually, Captain Toad faces off against Wingo one final time and wins, gaining the Power Stars and rescuing Toadette. At the end of the game, Captain Toad notices the Odyssey flying overhead and decides to travel to new kingdoms.
Super Mario Odyssey[]
Captain Toad is hidden in every kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey. When first encountered in the Cascade Kingdom, he tells Mario that he's searching for Power Moons. Whenever Mario finds him, Captain Toad hands over a Power Moon to help the hero rescue Princess Peach.
After Bowser's defeat, Captain Toad returns to the Mushroom Kingdom to relax with the Toad Brigade following his long and difficult adventures.
Bowser's Fury[]
Captain Toad and the Toad Brigade arrive in Lake Lapcat to explore the new region, only end up lost and separated once again. Toadette asks Mario and Bowser Jr. to go find them and bring them back to their campsite on Fur Step Island.
Mario and Bowser Jr. find Captain Toad on a small island off the coast of Scamper Shores, where he is being chased by Biddybuds. After they defeat the enemies, a grateful Captain Toad rewards the duo with a Cat Shine and returns to Toadette on Fur Step Island.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]
Captain Toad returns in a similar manner to his role in Odyssey. Here, Captain Toad can be found by searching for and entering unseen Warp Pipes and exits in the world map. When found, Captain Toad will give the Mario Bros., Peach, Princess Daisy, the Toads, the Yoshis, and/or Nabbit 50 Flower Coins that he found while exploring the Flower Kingdom to help them reach Castle Bowser.

Super Smash Bros.[]
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Captain Toad appears in the Toad Brigade trophy. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Captain Toad makes an cameo in the New Donk City Hall stage, he also appears as an ace-ranked primary neutral-type spirit.

- The reason Captain Toad is unable to jump in Super Mario 3D World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is because of his large backpack weighing him down.
- Despite their similar appearance, it has been stated by Nintendo that the Toad who appears in various Mario spin-offs is a separate character to Captain Toad.
