“ | So Batman can't help me? Fine. In that case... let's see what Batgirl can do! | „ |
~ Batgirl's most famous quote |
Barbara Gordon is a supporting character in Batman: The Animated Series, and the deuteragonist of its sequel series The New Batman Adventures. She is also one of the main protagonists of the Gotham Girls spin-off.
Barbara is the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordan, and, as Batgirl, Batman's crimefighting partner and protégé. Later in life, she follows in her father's footsteps by becoming the Commissioner of the Gotham Police Department.
She is voiced by Melissa Gilbert in Batman: The Animated Series, by Tara Strong - who also portrayed Paz Ortega Andrade in the Metal Gear Solid video game series, Rikku in the Final Fantasy video game series, Krista Sparks in Twisted Metal: Head On, Talwyn Apogee in Ratchet & Clank, Juliet Starling in Lollipop Chainsaw, Twilight Sparkle in My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic, the title character in Unikitty, Dil Pickles in Rugrats and All Grown Up!, Ben Tennyson in Ben 10, Timmy Turner and Poof in Fairly OddParents, Truffles in Chowder, Daizy in Wow Wow Wubbzy, and Princess Clara in Drawn Together - The New Batman Adventures, and by Stockard Channing in the first season of Batman Beyond before being replaced by Angie Harmon.
Appearance[]
Barbara is an adult woman who has a slender build. She also has light skin complexion, blue eyes and orange hair. As Batgirl, she wears a blue and gray superhero outfit that is similar to Batman.
History[]
Barbara was currently a college student during the time when she first met Batman. During a vacation visit to Gotham, her father was kidnapped and replaced by an android replicant built by the super-computer H.A.R.D.A.C.. Desperate for help, she used the Bat-Signal to request for Batman's help in finding her father. Although Batman agreed to investigate, he told her to stay safely away, as he didn't want her getting into danger.
However, Barbara didn't listen to his advice and investigated on her own, eventually locating H.A.R.D.A.C. and helping Batman beat the computer along with the evil android duplicants. After the mission was a success, Barbara started enjoying the thrills of crime-fighting, and started taking crime into her own hands.
A while later, Commissioner Gordon was incriminated for taking bribes from crime lord Rupert Thorne and when she asked for Batman's help, he agreed, although not to the extent she had expected. With this in mind, Barbara came up with a Batsuit version of her own and went out as Batgirl. Luckily to her assistance, Commissioner Gordon's name was cleared, and Two-Face was exposed as the mastermind behind the frame-up. Due to these circumstances, Batman and Robin decided to allow Batgirl to continue her crime-fighting activities, which were also sanctioned by her oblivious father, Commissioner Gordon.
Tim would get ambushed and kidnapped by Harley and Joker soon after, and Batgirl went with Batman to help rescue him. Unfortunately, they were too late as Tim has been completely brainwashed into becoming just like Joker: a mini Joker. Batman fought Joker while Batgirl fought Harley in an attempt to get Tim back. During the confrontation, Batgirl asks Harley why she'd help Joker in torturing Tim.
Harley admits she "roughed him up a lil", but she would make it right. Batgirl doesn't believe this, and Harley picks up a rock about to attack her, but Tim has received the rocket bazooka Harley told him to get for her. Harley shoots rockets at Batgirl, but she dodges them all, however, one rocket explodes near Batgirl and Harley, and they fall down a large cliff. Luckily, Batgirl held onto a ledge, but before she can help Harley up, she drops her due to her clothing ripping, and Batgirl was sad she couldn't save her. Unbeknownst to her, though, Harley survived her fall, and Batgirl and Batman succeed in helping Tim stop Joker, and get him back.
Trivia[]
- Batgirl's relationship with Harley Quinn kind of mirrors that of Batman and the Joker; as they both hate others each greatly and view each other as their archenemy. Plus, Batgirl openly views Harley as both her arch-nemesis and foil.
- In Batman: The Animated Series, her Batgirl costume is a gray bodysuit with blue gloves, boots, cape and cowl, and a gold bat-symbol and belt, resembling Batman's costume, but in The New Batman Adventures, her Batgirl costume is a black bodysuit with gold gloves, boots, bat-symbol and belt, and her cape and cowl are still blue, but the inside of her cape is yellow, which resembles her mainstream counterpart's debut appearance in Detective Comics #359.
