Hero Overview

Keep absolutely still. Its vision is based on movement.
~ Alan to Ian about Rexy's vision.
Hammond, after careful consideration, I have decided not to endorse your park.
~ Alan telling Hammond that he won't be supporting his theme park.
Dinosaurs lived sixty five million years ago. What is left of them is fossilized in the rocks, and it is in the rock that real scientists make real discoveries. Now what John Hammond and InGen did at Jurassic Park is create genetically engineered theme park monsters, nothing more and nothing less.
~ Alan's opinion on InGen's dinosaurs.

Alan Grant is the main protagonist of the Jurassic Park franchise. He serves as the main protagonist of both the original film and Jurassic Park III, and a major character in Jurassic World: Dominion.

He is a paleontologist who was invited by John Hammond to his theme park, Jurassic Park. Since then, he has been involved with the dinosaurs.

He is played by Sam Neill who also played John Trent in In the Mouth of Madness and Frankie Scales in Daisy Quokka: World's Scariest Animal.

Jurassic Park movies[]

Jurassic Park[]

Alan Grant is a world renowned paleontologist working at a dig site just outside Snakewater, Montana. He is described in the script as:

DR ALAN GRANT, mid-thirties, a ragged-looking guy with intense concentration you wouldn't want to get in the way of.

He was invited by John Hammond to his theme park: Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar. He and his partner Ellie Sattler accepted the offer, in exchange for a further three years of dig funding. When they arrived, he was astonished by the sight of a Brachiosaurus eating and wondering the area. Dr. Alan Grant saw how the DNA was extracted and witnessed the birth of a Velociraptor.

But the day quickly turned upside down when the Tyrannosaurus Rex escaped her exhibit and other carnivores made Dr. Alan Grant run for his life. He protected Lex Murphy and Tim Murphy while they tried to make it through the park. This included evading a falling Land cruiser down a 20 foot tree, running from a herd of Gallimimus, and climbing over an electric fence. Lex was able to get to the Visitor Center's computer room and restart all of the systems in the park.

Grant and the kids were then attacked by raptors and made it to the front of the Visitor Center where Hammond picked them up. Grant told Hammond that he decided not to endorse his park and Hammond agreed. They got on a helicopter and left the island. He grew to like kids during the experience on the island.

Jurassic Park III[]

Dr. Grant appears again in Jurassic Park III, since the first movie a lot has changed. Grant has continued to work as a paleontologist, this time at a dig site near Fort Peck Lake, Montana. His relationship with Ellie has ended. Now he has a new partner in Billy Brennan, his apparent protégé, but it is Grant who must rein in Billy's headstrong tendencies.

He visits Ellie and her family. In a way, he envies Ellie her happy family and wonders why he shies away from marriage and fatherhood.

He gave lectures on the intelligence of raptors, however, his listeners were only interested in the events in 1993, and the San Diego incident. He stated nothing could get him to The Five Deaths (Isla Sorna/SiteB). He was later bribed into going to Isla Sorna by so-called wealthy couple Kirby and his wife Amanda Kirby on an aerial tour. Dr. Alan Grant invited his paleontology colleague Billy Brennan to accompany him on the trip.

While they where flying over the island, Dr. Alan grant notices that the pilot Nash is going to land. Dr. Grant begins to protest but is knocked unconscious by Cooper, one of the mercenaries hired by Paul and Amanda Kirby. When Grant wakes up, they have landed on the island already and Paul Kirby who identified to Dr. Grant that Cooper is the one who knocked him out. Then after a failed take-off disrupted by a Spinosaurus due to Cooper indirectly lure the Spinosaurus on the runaway which cause the plane to crash and killing Nash in the process, Grant and the others are trapped on the island.

Grant discovers that the Kirbys are not wealthy or married, just middle class people who were searching for their son, Eric, who had gotten lost on the island eight weeks before. Realizing the Kirbys lied to him, Grant proceed to punch Paul, stating his dissatisfaction about being conned into going to Isla Sorna, which he had never been at. Grant is forced to lead the group, being the only person who has been on this experience. Grant, using his knowledge of dinosaurs, survives with the Kirbys and an injured Billy.

Jurassic World: Dominion[]

Grant returns in Jurassic World: Dominion. During a dig, Alan reunited with Ellie as she tells him that a Giant locust was causing the crops to drop. Alan decided to accompanied Ellie in getting a sample of the locust. After arriving at Biosyn, Alan and Ellie meet Ramsay Cole and Lewis Dodgson, the head of the company. Alan and Ellie reunited with Ian as they gave them a key that would help them get the sample of the locust.

Alan and Ellie were successful in getting the sample but were nearly killed when the insects swarm around them. However, Alan and Ellie managed to escape from them then meet a teenage girl named Maisie Lockwood, who had been kidnapped by Biosyn but escaped, as they leave the building together. Through the help of Ramsay, Alan, Ellie and Maisie escape through a hyperloop. However, after the hyperloop came to a stop, Alan, Ellie and Maisie leave it as they discovered that they're in a mine. While looking for a way to get out of the mine, Alan calmed a panicked Ellie down then tells her that he wasn't happy with the life he had, which surprised her. When asked by Maisie if they were together, Alan and Ellie told her they were not but they're still friends. Through the help of Ian, Alan, Ellie and Maisie escaped the mine. Alan and the group leave in the car that Ian brought with him. However, they discovered that Biosyn was destroying evidences through a fire in a group of insect, but managed to get away from them.

After falling over inside the car, Alan, Ellie and Ian see three people in front of them but Maisie recognized two of them as her adoptive parents as she exited the car to embraced her family. Alan, Ellie and Ian exited the car as Maisie told her parents that they rescued her, much to their gratitude. However, they were attacked by a Giganotosaurus but got away from it. While regrouping, Alan and Ellie were given some water by Maisie's father as he introduce himself as Owen Grady. Alan was flattered to hear that Owen is a fan of his and read his book on tape then recognized him as one of the employees at Jurassic World.

While Ellie left with Maisie's mother, Claire Dearing, to bring power back online in order to leave Biosyn, Alan accompanied Owen and Maisie in retrieving Beta, a baby Raptor that belong to one of the Raptors that Owen trained. Once they found her, Alan witness Maisie use what her father taught her about handling Raptors to ensure Beta only had her eyes on her. Seeing this, Alan was inspired to do the same method as Owen used on Raptors and help Maisie keep Beta eying on them so Owen can knock her out, which they were able to do. After getting Beta, Alan and the group meet up with Henry Wu as he recognized him as one of the scientist in Jurassic Park decades earlier. Alan and the group were unsure of trusting Henry but Maisie convinced them to give him a chance.

After leaving Biosyn, Alan and Ellie renew their relationship as they go to Washington D.C. to testify against Biosyn.

Trivia[]

  • Alan's fate is very different in the various canons: in the book and in Operation Genesis, he never encounters dinosaurs again after his initial visit to Isla Nublar, while in Jurassic Park Adventures: Prey, he lives for years on a research center to study the dinosaurs. • Sam Neill was ultimately cast as Grant three or four weeks before filming began. Neill said that "it all happened real quick. I hadn't read the book, knew nothing about it, hadn't heard anything about it, and in a matter of weeks I'm working with Spielberg."
  • Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, Richard Dreyfuss, Mel Gibson, William Hurt, Dennis Quaid, Kurt Russell, and Robin Williams were considered for the role of Alan Gant before Sam Neill was casted.
